With religion anything is allowed. My brother was abused by a priest who got off with “a warning” and was “moved away” whilst he still has to deal it all. Im more angry than him at times. Ironically I spend a lot of my time not trying to be too “preachy”

Nopke: Though we live in the same country, my experience with curbside evangelists is far less pleasant.

I live in Amsterdam, in a suburb that is home to several evangelical communities. These people do not take kindly to those they assume to be ‘devil-worshippers’. I consider myself agnostic, but my preferred style of clothing (either skate, or Victorian-inspired gothic) seems to convince them I’m evil, or something.

I have been told that I will go to hell, and should not take hell lightly (probably because I was wearing trousers embroidered with tattoo-style flames). I have been asked why my bag said ‘evil needs candy too’ (answer: because there’s a cute cartoon monster with a lollipop on it!). People have stared at me, then started a loud conversation about ‘those people that worship the occult’ and how they’ll be punished by god (I was wearing Victorian garb – a decidedly Christian era!). Then, there’s the old lady shouting to everyone on the subway that Jesus suffered for our sins and we should mourn for him. And the old lady that owns the Christian bookstore near my home, who I’ve seen telling random passers-by that they must buy her bibles or be damned.

I must agree that the Jehova’s Witnesses are of a friendlier sort. They tried to tell me that there must be a god, because plants function exactly as they should and are perfectly made. I was in too much of a hurry (and, admittedly, probably to shy) to explain evolution to them…

Back on topic: Interesting posters. One could almost call it false advertising – you think you’re getting a philosophy course, but you’re getting the religious equivalent of a sales pitch. Is that even allowed?

Is it really that bad or are you making it become that bad by focussing too much on those? In Holland they did it for sort of fun on the Jehova’s witnesses, but my personal experience has been very different. Very polite people and those who invited them in house for a talk actually thought they were good and honest discussion partners. Different views, that for sure. I never invited them, don’t want to spill their time, nor mine. They never push, that’s my experience. People who sell stuff are more pushy, but I just keep the one liner in: I’m not interested, and will repeat one more time if they keep going on and if they still would not want to listen (but they always do) I just say goodday and hang up or walk away. But I will keep friendly. Sofar no need to be unfriendly. People who beg for money or such .. had them on my back all the time as well (I look apparently like someone who is easy .. hahaha). It’s more that I prefer being friendly and this works quite well. Friendly but not too. Not letting them in, but giving them the other type of friendly smile from the eyes and at the same time being very clear about your own opinion.

But maybe this group overthere is different, I can’t judge this. My opinion is that if they are such a pain in the ass they probably wont gain much members in the end. Only a few that were lost perhaps. And sometimes certain groups are not that bad (instead of drugs or such). Certain groups, not all ofcourse, for sure not all.

I’m not religious myself, and I will enjoy quite a lot if one of those groups would try to talk me out of this … quite a lot … I’d be at their own personal center quite quickly … at their throat .. but in a nice way … But not on my way to work of if I’m busy otherwise ..

I’ve seen quite a few of these types of adverts posted up around my university (I’m not sure if they are advertising alpha courses though) with questions like ‘why did jesus die?’ and ‘is being good good enough?’ and I am so tempted sometimes to write a funny answer on them! Its funny that someone has actually done this though – and a good reply too! lol!
