But I think Berber Anna is correct! The Chinese are famous for having diformed feet sometimes but mostly from squeezing them in rediculously small shoes from a very early age. They're not facing backward, they're upside down. You can see the heels of the feet in their proper place, but after that, the feet seem to double up, so that the top part faces down.
