New Year was wrapped in superstition. My brother used to get kicked out just before midnight every year with bread or potatoes, only to be let in again. Next year's calendar could not be looked at before midnight on Dec 31st came. The house was cleaned until it sparkled lest the banshee come and rip your hair out in the middle of the night.
