Can’t wait for the show tonight – we came to see you in Bristol and had a lovely chat with you whilst you were all bandaged up…loved it!
Hopefully this year’s tour will come by Bristol again…as would love to see you for a 3rd time.
Keep up the great, evil work you do
x
Magnus: I first watched The System on C4′s online player thingy, so I suppose that would work with this, as well.
Not sure if I’m going to watch, though. I saw the show live, and I don’t know whether it’ll interest me to see it again. Then again, I could show it to people that didn’t go, because it was a rather awesome show. Hm.
Katos Magnus! That makes two of us stuck here in Finland who can’t watch it. So unfair!!! And if the old marks are true it won’t be coming here for a looooong time of period – if at all….
But we live the excitement whit you here in blog *smile*
-milla-
I had to rely on ordering Derren’s shows on DVD from Amazon up to now. That’s getting a bit expensive though…
Derren, if you read this: I have already spent AT LEAST 300 bucks on your DVDs, so how about coming to Finland for a stage show for a change? Don’t expect too many people in the audience, but Milla and me will make it up by taking you on a snowscooter tour through Lapland (home of the Lapdance).
Brain caps on .. that makes the transfer more simple
(2001: A Space Odyssey etc) ..
Yes, you can wear those others too, the ones block all incoming/outgoing signals .. (you will have a weirdish evening though, wearing that one .. )
Very much agree with what others have said, I too did go see the show live, but still anxiously awaiting its TV debut
How could we possibly forget such an exiting thing?
My housemate is using it as a bargaining tool, so if we watch DB tonight I won’t whinge when he watches Chelsea trash Southend tomorrow. This is not logical, as he likes Derren Brown too, but I am not going to call him on it because capricious Southend makes him suffer enough already. Just,. why are football games so long and tiny?
Katie – every show is different… as the show is based on peoples reactions and personal experiences, wants, needs (‘specially the 2nd half) – every show is different.
I was astounded the first time I saw this live, 2nd time was equally fantastic…. then the other times, for me, it was more about hearing other peoples reactions – it is truely fantastic.
Sue: How many times did you see it? I saw just one show (the first evening of the London run).
Personally, I don’t like seeing shows that involve magic too many times, unless I’m set on figuring out how things are done. If I see it more than once, the mystery starts to wane, and I start to wonder about the mechanics. Some shows are too nice to want to do that.
I agree about the magic element and figuring stuff out… and as said above, first 2 times was like wow… then I read his early books and started figuring a lot of the stuff out — and then it became enjoying other peoples reactions to what was happening more than anything – oh and meeting him obvioushly. ;o)
Hi!
We came to see the Evening of Wonders on the 7th of June – just watching the recorded one go out on channel four now, and it’s as brilliant as we remember!
However, can’t remember if you were filming our one as well (I think you filmed more than one, in case some shots don’t work out) – so my question is did you film the 7th of June? Reason I ask is I swear the surfer guy with the sex wax was in our one, but none of the other oracle ones were in our one…
I don’t want to think he was a plant! I could be misremembering but it wasn’t just me who remembered him, but my friend who came with me.
The surfer guy with the wax wasn’t in any show that I’d been too, if that helps.
Well done Derren – looked good on TV, shame that some bits were cut out – I understand why the bit at the begining was cut out, but it was a shame that the card stuff had been cut also. Oh, but I did like th start to it (now we know where the car pics came from), and the front of the Garrick brought it all back.
Anyhow, well done Derren, Andy and the rest of the crew.
Someone have a word with Channel 4. It’s bad enough that the unkempt monstrosity that is Justin Lee Bloody Collins is on my TV, but there’s also a man doing bastard rope “magic”.
Is this supposed to be a suitable addendum to An Evening of Wonders?
BB – we went to the show that was televised tonight and i think all they did was add a few bits from other shows. It was 90% from the 4th June I think with a few extras in. The surf wax guy was not in the show we watched at the garrick and neither was the man who wanted to wax his balls!! My mate got picked on and his answer was on the roll out sheet at the end – not fixed i guarantee. However, i would never ever have expected my mate to give ‘australia’ as his answer. who knows how that idea got into his head!! the power of derren i guess!!
Thanks for the reassurances guys, I’m more annoyed that I can’t remember if our one was filmed, you’d think I’d remember that. But it must have been. It doesn’t make sense that it’d be a plant anyway as there are people with far better memories with me and they’d be going to the press with any discrepancies.
Can’t wait for next tour, I adore having my mind repeatedly blown by DB!
Cheers
That was excellent! Really enjoyed it.
I didn’t get out of my seat once…which is rare for me, seeing as though I have to be doing at least 2 things at once, I can’t sit still and I can’t concentrate on what’s on the tv…. lol
I’ve never been to a live show but I really, really want to, not just because bits get chopped out of the TV shows….I’m fascinated by it all.
I had a bottle of claret, an open fire, a (full colour and highly portable) TV and the very very best hour and a half of televisual entertainment since… well since ‘The System’ .
Fantastic material, brilliantly performed. The gorilla – a stroke of genius ! Loved it.
Having this televised was brilliant, especially as it allowed me to see the differences between the live version (I saw it in Belfast, one of the few occasions someone one the £5,000).
The one thing I have to say is… Danielle. The blonde girl at the end with the white & blue stripes. Don’t quote me on this, I very may well be wrong, but… wasn’t she also at the Belfast show? Didn’t she also guess “20″ and was off by 3? I don’t like to think there any stooges in the show, and I know the majority aren’t (a friend of mine was the first to catch a frisbee at Belfast) but I’m almost sure she was at that show doing the same thing.
As a 20 year old aspiring magician/mentalist in Ireland, I am a huge Derren fan and absolutely loved tonight’s performance. I was annoyed at the timing of the ad breaks but that’s not anyone’s fault! I think the talk of stooges above is ultimately rather ridiculous if you think about the thing as a whole. I was at the Belfast show and can recall that the girl at the end most definitely had a local accent, and was not the same girl as tonight. I can’t remember her name however – my apologies! Good to see such good feedback.
I hope you’re right, she just seemed very familiar, the numbers were exactly the same, but that can of course be put down to Derren’s NLP techniques frequently used. Other than the girl at the end, the question at the beginning of the Oracle act, regarding “Should I go to America?” was also at the Belfast show close to the beginning, and Derren gave the same spiel about not wanting to give the impression it was set in the stars.
I really hope it’s not scripted/stooged, because then it just adds that much more of an air of skill to Derren’s craft that he can elicit the same responses from different people.
All in all, great show, still one of the most mesmerising things I’ve ever watched.
I can only say that I went on stage in London (that’s what you get for instinctively grabbing at things that fly past ), and I’m definitely no stooge. Which doesn’t prove that no stooges are used, of course, but I don’t think it’s very likely. For one, he’d have to hire some exceptionally quiet stooges, or be very good with the bribes, for none to have opened their mouth about it.
I don’t remember that part of the Oracle act exactly (was somewhat distracted by something happening in the row in front of me), but did anybody actually acknowledge asking that question? If not, then there’s no stooge being used.
The only Katie who got involved in the Oracle act when I saw the show didn’t ask anything about America. My friend and me happened to chat with her after the show, and she was definitely no stooge, either.
It could just be something like him selecting certain questions that he has answers to. If there’s always a travel question, it’s quite possible that the destination mentioned would be America in two shows. Would be a lot stranger if it was something like Lithuania or something, a less popular destination.
We went for the other half’s birthday to the live one, I hope this will be on the 4OD website, I was working last night
I was sat right up at the back under the main light. I cannot say how strong the desire to stand up and stick my hand up in front of that light was when he was doing the finger game. But I’m a good girl :p
To quote my husband “That was the best magic show I’ve ever seen on tv”. Think he is even more terrified of Derren than he was before. Looking forward to Plymouth in May. I’m off to practice my frisbee catching skills…
Love reading other peoples comments and reactions on his shows (hence one of the reasons I like to go more than once).
Ivan – it is a possibility that Danielle was used during 2 shows, as she maybe one of his fans who has been to see him more than once at a different venue. One of my friends saw him a few times and at 2 different venues she was lucky enough to get picked for that bit at the end (she is no stooge).
Great show! The only two similar elements I found with the routine, when I saw the live show in Dartford – was at the beginning of the Oracle Act. When Derren pointed out that the first envelope had tiny writing and must of been from a teenage boy ‘egged on’ by friends to write ‘Cock’ seems suspiciously like a plant, or more than one person believes Derren to be a Cock. Heaven forbid!
And the other part of the show when he turned down the sixth participant in the ‘guessing objects’ routine and then at the end having her answer of Buttons (Live@Dartford) or Bracelet (TV) scrolled at the end of an seemingly infinite sheet of paper from a spaghetti jar! Would of been pre-prepared! But I must admit, I found myself staring at the jar that contained the sheet of paper, and started thinking “Where did he get that jar from? Oh well… it must just be a prop from a magic shop, or something!” Only then to be amazed that he answered my question (across the airways) with it’s a spaghetti jar, but you don’t need to know that! I don’t think I blinked for a while after that! And I didn’t sleep all night!
The teenage boys part does seem to be a jokey part of the routine (was surprised when I saw it on YouTube, but phrased slightly differently from when I saw it live). I liked it, though — lightened the atmosphere a bit.
The answer thing, however, doesn’t have to have anything to do with stooges or plants. I’ve seen a lot of different versions of it in different shows, and while I still marvel at it and have no clue as to how it works, I find it unlikely that it would be plants or stooges every time. Too many different situations, in my opinion.
Hi Berber Anna – Sorry, I probiley didn’t make myself very clear. I thought the envelope was a plant (added to lighten the mood) on stage as a joke and that Derren had worked out the sixth participant’s object before hand and rejected her- simply to increase the drama of the piece for the climatic ending…Pacing and Leading you see!
No Spoilers!
I know how table turning works with ideometics (that’s in Derren book) and Levitation is an old magicians trick. But I can not see how the ‘Oracle Act’ works or the rest of the show for that matter. Well… you know what they say – There is no cure for curiosity!
I’m looking forward to his new stage show! I would just love to be one of thoughs people working backstage offering tea and coffee to the crew. Just to be involved with the whole process and the officious busle of that environment. Err… Sorry…A little bit sidetracked then!
I knew about the table-tipping thing, but that just added to the surprise when it suddenly lifted off! Very nice way to work up to a trick like that.
And I’d love the backstage experience, too, just to see what’s involved in creating the smooth show you see when you’re in the audience.
Except, you know, then I’d miss the show…
YAY! =D
Im so exited
x
Thank you Coops. Do you really think we would forget!
And im not in uk and cant see the show, yäy
Ohoh .. I completely forgot ..
how’s that possible …
maybe because it’s not aired here in Holland ….
No evening of wonders here .. (well, why oh why isn’t it in Holland on tv .. I can start wondering about that ofcourse …)
Thank God we Dutches are magical people .. stuffed with wonders ..
:<
FORGET? FORGET? As if… Oh my god its the highlight of our year.
…Even though I saw it live 5 times, I’m still wetting myself in excitement.
xx
Can’t wait!
Can’t wait for the show tonight – we came to see you in Bristol and had a lovely chat with you whilst you were all bandaged up…loved it!

Anyone knows whether the show will be shown on Channel 4′s video on demand?
… and whether this works also outside the UK???
I’m stuck at the Arctic Circle in Finland at the moment and British television hasn’t made it here yet…
Magnus: I first watched The System on C4′s online player thingy, so I suppose that would work with this, as well.

Eagerly anticipating 10pm! Saw the show myself so will be interested to see how different two of Derren’s performances are.
Derren Brown + homemade curry = wonderful night in with my flatmates!
suzanne, the murphy’s law tells me that they’re going to broadcast the one you’ve been to;)
Katie – every show is different… as the show is based on peoples reactions and personal experiences, wants, needs (‘specially the 2nd half) – every show is different.

Have only seen this 4 times….shame on me
(but it still cost me a bloody fortune lol)
Tis really rather good.
Wish I’d gone to see it live now.
Bugger.
Fantastic show tonight.

Does the bastard rope magic involve a noose and Justin Lee Collins’s neck?
Evening of Wonders was great. I’d forgotten most of it as I saw it about 18 months ago. Very good death dive.
just watched it on channel 4 and seeing it a second time after seeing it live explains a lot of method but not all, still loved it, great show!

I missed the gorilla. We loved the show!
Was the finger game a real one or one you made up? What was it called…circle tension?
4oD isn’t carrying the show as of yet.
