I love science too but what's impressive here is the technology and not so much the Science. You can have technology without science and science without technology. Think about how the cavemen used fire and build tools and all that. They didn't really understand why things are the way they are, that's what science is -or should be- about. What they did was to observe and work things out through trial and error. We got a better understanding now and we make better guesses (we're better at trial and error) but technology is still only technology and not science.

Anyway here's a more recent news story about bionic eyes, the one above is from 2006: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=696dxY6BYBM

That actually sounds amazing. I love science. Give it fifty years and no one on earth will be blind.

At the risk of looking like a total sci-fi geek, shouldn't it look like an alice band that slipped down over the patient's eyes like Geordi La Forge's did in Star Trek TNG?

The electrodes plug into the device, the article says. Seems logical, as you'd have to be able to take the thing off when you want to sleep and such. So if it caused fits or pain, the patient would be able to take it off, I think.

bit worrying as it could cause endless epileptic fits in some patients i could only imagine the pain that would entail with no way of stopping it once the device has been secured to your skull!!
