Check out http://www.xmind.net Open source. Free version is powerful. They have a paid version that adds on a presentation layer and the ability to make some * light * gantt charts. No dependencies, etc. No resource pools either.

I did a bit of research into this recently too, and found this one pretty good http://www.thebrain.com/ and also a non linear presentation tool called Prezi from prezi.com is a really good bit of free software for making mind maps (althopugh that wasn\'t really what it was made for).

Hi Phillis,

I like the book summary mind maps at http://litemind.com/
Here they are: http://litemind.com/category/book-summary/
They are interactive, which is very cool.
I have no idea what software Luciano Passuello uses but I guess you could ask him if you still need suggestions.

I'll recommend freemind. It's open source, written in Java,so it'll work on Windows, Linux or a MAC.

If you don't mind paying for it, and want the Microsoft office integration, for Windows/MAC the Mindjet software is also quite good.

I don't think OpenMind is around in it's open source form any more.

See this wikipedia page for a good comparison:

Thanks for the emails and YES! I am using it as presentation/educational software - so thanks for all the suggestions. Please do post them in here rather than emailing though as I would also like others to share.

Mindmanager is the best software I've used so far, but you can't beat good old paper & pens for truly effective mindmapping

I'd definitely recommend Inspiration - there is a kids' version called Kidspiration, which you need to avoid though.
