*grins* I live octo… octo… octothingies (not getting into the multiple debate here…
). I once read a blog post from a girl who works at an aquarium. Their octopus (singular, hah) was quite the escape artist, so they’d surrounded her pond with artificial grass, which apparently feels really bad on your tentacles when you’re an invertebrate escapee.
The octopus was understandably miffed. So she refused to come up to feed, and just sat and sulked at the bottom of the tank. But she made it quite clear what she was upset about… by making her body green and spiky, like the grass!
Live? Uhm. Love, that is. I’m not quite sure how one would LIVE octos.
Octopi? as in hippopotumi? I dunno, either that or I made that up slightly… That is way cool, and a bit freakydeaky lol
The info card attached to my octopus plushy uses ‘octopods’ as the multiple. Spell check doesn’t want to accept that, though. Merriam-Webster online gives ‘octopuses’ and ‘octopi’. Octopi doesn’t really ring right, though, as the ‘pus’ is Greek for ‘feet’ — it’s not the regular Latin ‘us’ ending.
See? Endless discussion! It seems like everybody uses a different multiple for the poor creatures…
Bloody hell! It’s a good job people can’t do things like that!
That’s pretty awesome. Check out this amazingly long squid, it can’t appear out of nowhere but it has elbows and ridiculously long tentacles.

wow thas greatt…houdini the octopi pa pussi ,doh …miaaw lol
i can do that when i wear a paisley body suit and balaclava and stand against a paisley wall.
Wow, I want one.
And THAT’S why I have studied biomimetics at uni!
And yet we believe Octopi can only see in black and white. So wither colour change is a concious decision or a reflex action based on mood or something else, we just don’t know.
There’s an interesting article about Dr. Hanlon and a video with some background about the octopus clip here http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/19/science/19camo.html
OK, I’ve researched this! Fowler’s Modern English Usage says that the only acceptable plural in English for ‘octopus’ is ‘octopuses’, saying that ‘octopi’ is just plain wrong and ‘octopodes’ pedantic. I’d still go with ‘octopodes’ though, given that it’s correct for the Greek etymology of the word.
Great clip by the way. Who really cares what the plural is – that octopus is amazing!
I’m actually having trouble persuading people that this is genuine… Argh when the real world is so amazing, why con yourself with cop-outs like that?!
…sorry to vent a bit there
“In the Octopuses garden…”
Wonderful demonstration of nature and evolutionary genius! No need to be cynical about this.
I want one!
Heard a scuba diver a while ago on radio 4 talking about how octop…whateverthepluralofthatis have voracious appetites. If you present one with a crab it’ll eat it. If you keep feeding it crabs, eventually it’ll get lumpy from all the exoskeletons it’s ingested as they don’t have a concept for “enough”.
Wonder how true that is?
Flapjack: Seems somewhat dodgy, as octos (yeah, that’s my take on the plural now) actually have a beak, so I’d think they’d break up the exoskeleton of the crabs, not ingest it whole. I think it’s possible that the diver saw an octopus that had changed its shape for camouflage, and assumed he was seeing crab exoskeletons through the octopus.
@flapjack…i read the octo´s do have a good grasp of conceptual thinking (like apes) but also that they are colourblind…. have three hearts…and if they would have lived longer then 3-5 years their intelligence would be the dominant one not the humans…brrr
#snaps BA# lol…you were first
Berber Anna/ Religiousmarie – have to say it did sound a bit far fetched. I was just wondering if there’s an octopus expert in the house or whether I would have to rely on snippets of nature documentaries!
Personally I don’t think any animal would be dumb enough not to know when it had reached maximum capacity… even obese people have a limit.
Mind you I did see a great David Attenborough documentary in which they showed an octopus solving a maze and crawling through a hole a fraction of it’s body width. They are brilliant…
That was amazing…! I’m rather impressed by the Superb Lyerbird myself, it lives in Australia and most notable for their ability to mimic natural and unnatural sounds. See Link:

o o oo amazing…the documentaries from david attenborough are just like poetry in motion…beautifully filmed
Does he do the voice over from the youtube quantum physics man? he sounds familiar..
“the documentaries from david attenborough are just like poetry in motion…beautifully filmed”
If you haven’t already, go watch Blue Planet on Blu-Ray. It’s visually stunning and so beautifully filmed with a truly wonderful musical score to accompany it. Make sure you watch it on a huge TV though!
ReliegiousMarie: No…! But I think the Lyerbird can do voice over, if you were Referring to my previous link?
Sara – That Lyrebird reminded me of an African Grey parrot I met a while ago in a chandlery shop on the Isle of Wight. He was bored by being stuck in a cage by the shop window, so he used to relieve the tedium by imitating the shoplifter alarm whenever some poor unsuspecting punter walked out, with a view to getting them frisked. He was pretty good at it.
vix: Octopi but octopuses is now correct as well. Ridiculous considering how much I was tortured into spelling it the ‘old’ way. But oohh invisible octopus! I love nature!
@michelle…pity i dont have a blu ray nor a big screen But i´m sure it will be a sight even on my screen…i bet blue planet will be even good on a black n white screen if you catch my drift…ill surely look it up now! thnx for the tip…
@Sara …yes i was refering to your link and at the same time at flapjacks description of also another one of david attenborough documentaries, which i looked up also…the Bird is a charming´´chappy lol…we would probably say in human terms that he is an equiped playboy!
Hell yeah Octopus!!
