yep, I was thinking zoetrope too. I think it's the same principle but instead of seeing a sequence of separated images you're seeing the images overlaid by amazing computer magic. The images/slits/eyes are moving in relation to each other just like you'd get in a zoetrope.

Here is a functional explanation of zoetropes, and I've looked around youtube for really amazing beautiful films of them but seems they're like hens' teeth.

btw the first illusion they show is the Borromean Rings, which I just found out about due to computer games. They are incredibly cool and everyone all over the world throughout history has geeked out over them.

Kelly: No, holograms are copied onto holographic plates due to lasers reflecting of a shiny metal object onto the plate. Iv'e recently made some, I could see how it could be confused.

My 2 year old son has a book with these in they are called "scanimation" picture books - I'm so pleased I now know how it's done - it was driving me crazy! I recommend the books to anyone with small kids - he loves them. :D

It's similar to the principle that governs the Zoetrope, except the windows of light divide the image in this instance... similar to those animated light refracting school rulers you used to get in the 80's.
I'm old enough to remember those, but for the record I never owned a zoetrope... I'm not that decrepid...
I just know my animation history!
