I think it's the same principle but instead of seeing a sequence of separated images you're seeing the images overlaid by amazing computer magic. The images/slits/eyes are moving in relation to each other just like you'd get in a zoetrope. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3yarT_h2ws" rel="nofollow">Here</a> is a functional explanation of zoetropes, and I've looked around youtube for really amazing beautiful films of them but seems they're like hens' teeth. btw the first illusion they show is the Borromean Rings, which I just found out about due to computer games. They are incredibly cool and everyone all over the world throughout history has <a href="http://www.liv.ac.uk/~spmr02/rings/index.html" rel="nofollow">geeked out</a> over them. yep, I was thinking zoetrope too. I'm old enough to remember those, but for the record I never owned a zoetrope... I'm not that decrepid... I just know my animation history!
