That monkey is magnificent! I want one. I could make my monkey do my vector calculus for me. But I'd treat my monkey. I'd give him a neck massage if he were tired and I'd make him banana milkshakes on his study breaks. Me and my monkey would co-exist quite happily.

I'm not in favor of monkey labor either, but dont they beat horses as well, in western civilized world .. just for fun, as racing and such are not really that usefull in the end. And break their legs in thos cross country races ..
hunt foxes .. etc etc ... Spank their dog because it will not jump through hoops, or is a bit too happy to see new visitors (and pees all over the floor) ...

I wonder about the monkey story whether it is all true. It does not sound too serious. Beating monkeys is not a good way to train them to do little things like picking coconuts. He/she at least gets to climb outside on a daily bases. His owner most at least has done something to get him to pick those coconuts for them .. if the story is true. Animals abusers would not call them loveable at all .. no way. Usefull perhaps. But not loveable.

If the story is true the way it is stated here and they really beat the monkey ... disgusting for sure. A little spunking if it bites, that's a whole different thing. Not beating them up, but make sure that they know that biting is not allowed.

I love monkeys, but prefer them in the wild. However cute I find those little chimps .. (I dont want a human baby, I want a little chimp .. they are so adoreable .. can't get over them .. )

So what they told us at Sunday school was true - you should never spank the monkey!
(Sorry, my resistance to dubious innuendos couldn't hold out for two monkey abuse stories!)

He would stop being "lovable" anyway. When people talk about animals being "lovable" they usually mean docile and nearly as compliant as a stuffed toy. With the previous story about the monkey beating his trainer, this brings it to positive reinforcement-based training: 2, dominance-based training: 0.

"The dead man’s wife said that the monkey had “seemed lovable” when they bought him for £130."
That would be because he was lovable until they started treating him like their personal slave and beating him when he didn't meet his coconut quota. That's what you get when you don't allow 15 minute coffee breaks and pay your workers peanuts!
Have these folks never seen "Spartacus"?
