While alternative treatments have entered the mainstream in human medical practices, many still consider them an eccentric luxury for pets, one reserved for the pampered. But acupuncture, massage and chiropractic treatments can be effective cures for common pet ailments -- sometimes with dramatic results.

CaptCaveman, people use natural remedies all the time. Lots of modern drugs are derived from plant sources. The things currently sold as "alternative" or "natural" medicine are things that have not held up under scrutiny when tested to see if they work. L Lysene is an amino acid. No idea if it really works for you or not, but it's no more natural or unnatural than the drugs that are used in conventional medicine. A few weeks ago, I was listening to local morning radio where they were discussing a study that apparntly indiciated that chicken soup was as effective in treating colds as most over the counter remedies. The study was carried out by scientists. Scientists will also tell you that honey contains antibiotics. Scientists don't hate everything in the natural world - just the opposite.
The reason people get so annoyed about stories like this is because healers do give false hope and take advantage of people when they are vulnerable, and in the case of veterinary medicine PeterH has said he knows owners who avoid medicine proven to work in favour of this.

There have been marvellous results with natural remedies for animals- my cat has Herpes and needs to take something called L Lysene, that is the ONLY thing that stops him having break outs, it is not a drug but a natural substance-I think people rely far too much on science and drugs- I have known animals in Actress Alexandra Basedo (THE CHAMPIONS) animal shelter that have lived way over the average because she doesnt believe in treating with drugs where she can, and some dogs and cats are living to 20+ years old, and it isnt just the odd one here and there it is MOST of her animals.

Animals- unlike us cant really experience a "placebo effect".

While I do not agree with "healers" promising cures of cancer and the like, it shouldnt ALL be rubbished or tarred with the same brush- people are too closed minded when it comes to natural therapies- I dont understand it-.I think if it works for them then so what? Like anything else in life whether Gay or religious- each to their own eh?

SGC- usually with much rolling of eyeballs and muttered profanity. Seriously, I see my position as a spokesperson for my patients - I can only advise on what,in my opinion, is the best course of action, particularly with regard to pain management for terminal cases. Fortunately, most people seek out homeopathic vets who are qualified vets who happen to believe in the dark art, so it is usually used in conjunction with conventional medicine. Any improvement is then taken as proof that the homeopathic treatment has worked - how very convenient and unscientific. It appears that the veterinary side of things is better regulated than the human field, in the UK, at least.

PeterH: yeah, I do feel bad about the owners being so desperate. I know if one of my birds was seriously ill I would lose my mind. It really sucks that people might be neglecting real treatment in favour of this, that must be so frustrating for you to deal with. How do you respond to an owner who is putting off conventional treatment in favour of dog reiki or whatever?
