Trends in Cognitive Sciences explores how cognitive neuroscientists are becoming increasingly interested in understanding hypnosis and are using it to simulate unusual states of consciousness in the lab.
Hypnosis was typically treated with suspicion by mainstream cognitive science, although an important turning point came when a 2000 study demonstrated that people hypnotised to see colour on grey panels showed activity in the colour perception areas of the brain.
Myths about hypnosis are still common, but it is nothing more than a participant’s willing engagement in a process of suggestion. The hypnotic induction, sterotypically the counting backwards and the ‘you are feeling sleepy’ patter, helps but is not necessary.

I know how hypnosis works but… I kinda need to practice it before I can actually do it if you know what I mean lol. Bit like watching football, seeing how all the cool skills are done, but doing them for yourself isn’t so easy.
I love how Derren is like a grandmaster at this and can cram so many skills in just a few words
nice to see its being accepted and used.
haha…accepted that its all just entertainment, nothing more or less. Dressed us as ‘hypnosis’ all it is, is people playing along. This is why when a stage hypnotist brings up so many people at the start and get rid of people ‘who are not susceptical’ i.e. who wont paly along.
good fun tho in the right performers hand!!
The state they try to establish in a person is not really that special .. lots of people hang in there way more often than they think, so in a way we are pretty good in hypnotizing ourselves … Whether you really can achieve more things in that state than in other states … that\’s the question ofcourse .. and also, what a person will tell while being hypnotized … not all will tell the truth .. they will feel as if going into their fantasy land … And doing weird things …. ehehehe …. some dont dislike being in that state … especially not when you do have an excuse as being hypnotized …
It will work different on younger people than on older people I guess.
People while working behind pc\’s are more easy to \’hypnotize\’, but be aware of those who keep their real mind in the back … who keep observing … They will get you back if you try something not so nice …
Yes, this is a slightly different technique … people seem to split up when others use this technique on them .. The users call it socializing …
Oh well …
ehehehe …
I might get to see a real live stage hypnotist this month, so this article is interesting and exciting! On the other hand, stage hypnotists are a bit disturbing and mildly scary. Still, I don’t have to volunteer. And if he bothers me, I can abreact right in his face!
meanwhile
Is it rude to eat sprouting garlic? It feels like it is.
All quiet when Derren’s not out and about isnt it?!
Risotto nearly ready. No I am not having my dinner, I certainly am not having my supper. I’m from Nottinghamshire and I’m having my TEA!
@SGC:
A stage hypnotist usually performs at my Uni – I don’t like him. He makes people do pervy stuff and isn’t that nice. However, not all of them are like that. It is quite cool to see somebody hypnotised for the first time but just make sure that the hypnotist isn’t a dickhead if you want to go up yourself.
I wouldn’t like hypnotising on a stage to be honest… it’s too… I dunno… amateur, I guess. I would rather be doing much more with what I know.
It looks to be clean, but I wouldn’t be going up on stage. I can act like a retard without some random guy waving his hands in my face and grabbing my arm and pulling me about, thank you very much. Now if you’ll all excuse me, I’m off to cluck like a chicken at my coworkers until they tell me to sod off and let them get some work done. Suckers.
Update: apparently my clucking and barking are excellent and I can outdo any hypnotised person and can I please go away now. Mission accomplished! I sure accomplished a lot this Monday!
i went on hypnotherapy course and learnt a bit. i have hypnotised my boyfriend to not do a certain thing and yes it worked. what i really want to learn a bit more of is the stage hypnotism and the quick inductions, i would love to know before i scoodle off to uni so if anyone can help ill give u a big thanks
xx
The hypnotic induction, sterotypically the counting backwards and the ‘you are feeling sleepy’ patter, helps but is not necessary.
OK maybe, but knowing a whole bunch of inductions? Totally dorky fun. It’s like knowing all the actors who played Doctor Who- not all that necessary but edifying in its’ own geeky way.
