Both have beautiful old theatres which would probably provide something closer to the ambience you're looking for. That said, the set design went a long way to bringing a little warmth to the somewhat soulless Harrogate Conference Centre! Did you go on the Wednesday? If so there was a footie match on and there may have been a lot of traffic around the Quays area, as that's where Old Trafford is. Other than that can't think of why a taxi wouldn't be able to get you there? It was really annoying that the trams weren't running.
