According to Wikipedia “In 1971, while drilling for natural gas in Darvaza, Turkmenistan, the ground on which the drilling rig was placed collapsed, leaving a large gaping hole exposed with a diameter of around 60 meters. To avoid poisonous gases coming out of the hole, it was decided to let the gases burn. As of 2008, gases in the underground cavern are still burning without interruption. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell.”
We’ve seen other reports saying it was from Soviet drilling in the 1950′s. Either way someone decided to burn it and it’s been burning for a long time.

Aw, come on! That deserves to be filed under ‘amazing’!
Fair nuff!
A bit like the Springfield Tire Fire. Man made but somehow it would be un-natural to be without it.
Reminds me of Centralia.
Surely ‘Fairy Nuff’ ?
More interesting stuff on that website, underground city stuff and such.
Let’s hope the earth will not open around here ..they are drilling for gas here in the area as well and earthquakes are common due to this. Small ones ofcourse.. I find these things still a bit .. what if mother earth does no longer wish to see to her passive nature here and there.
We see ofcourse burning gas all the time here and there, but then via pipes .. this will look beautifull when it is dark, this crater. Especiallly when you see it with your own eyes. From a distance you probably think there is a underground city or such .. sort of.
City of Ember .. nice movie it seems, had never heard of it. Cinema is a bit out of my focus I’m afraid, but did not run into it in the dvd store either.
That looks really cool!
