That was the first edition, it’s a lot rarer than the green one. I used to have a copy but had to sell it as I needed the money

Ooooh, ‘Pure Effect’ now has a £148 price tag?!? Do I treasure it for posterity or do I flog my old copy? Could do with the cash… nah, I’ll sit on it a bit longer. Maybe get Derren to sign it.
BTW Someone’s written a pretty scathing review of the ‘Portraits’ book on Amazon.
Says Derren’s art skills are sub-A level and that he doesn’t understand the principles of caricature. As a degree level artist myself I thought the reviewer was being a bit of a [insert expletive of choice here].
I think Derren’s portraits are everything a caricature should be and more, and in return for a signed copy I promise to write him a glowing 5 star review on Amazon to boost his average book rating (well it’s got to be worth a shot!). As it stands there are only 3 reviews!
My birthday on Sunday, have been bought Derren’s portraits book but will have to wait four weeks until I can get it from my bestest friend…will be worth the wait although means I can’t get it signed on the 27th

Is ENIGMA going to be on DVD or on television some time?
Pure effect is about £80 on ebay. I’ve only just bought my copy. I was laughing out loud at the sheer bravado of some of the techniques.
For those who did not get to see why they could not ask for it here, instead of needing to run of the nearest bookstore/dvd shop or .. ofcourse .. amazon.
Commerce should be here ofcourse, as … money drives so many people.
Are the books under recommended reading suggested by Derren himself? I thought the books he recommended in Tricks of the Mind were top quality and would like to look into what else he has to offer.
for a minute there I thought Derren was having a spring clean of his home and was flogging stuff to sell to make a bit of money on the side. LOL
Pure Effect and Absolute Magic are my favorite magician’s texts, but they would probably not interest a normal fan. I paid nearly these prices for them and would gladly do it again at twice the price. The new Portraits book is exquisite too, but works on a very different level. I will not attempt to hide my jealousy that Derren should be so adept in these two disparate fields.
thanks for this list my book shelf is now full of every derren dvd from the international magic show lecture to devils picture book which is a truely amazin dvd and a must have and every book from programmes from live shows in blackpool to pure effect

Unfortunately only recently moved to england from america and just ‘discovered’ Mr Brown!!!!
I wonder if Derren would ever consider re-publishing pure effect and absolute magic again. Even it if it for a limited period and limited copies. Because I would love to buy them. It is pity they are not still avaliable…am a really big fan.

For anyone wondering, Pure Effect & Absolute Magic are usually quite freely available on Ebay, admittedly for differing prices (some, even for an OOP book are bordering on daylight robbery). I think anything around the £100 mark for either is reasonable.
I have recently just been lucky enough to snap up a 1st edition of Absolute Magic for £110! Now they don’t come up quite so often…..(I do already have the 2nd edition which I am in the midst of reading & enjoying very much. Esp loved reading Derren describing his ‘cha-cha’ days….very funny!!)

Ok, so Derren Brown is a pretty amazing chap. But all this obsessing over his books is ridiculous. Not making re-issues of a book that seems in such demand is very strange. Maybe it’s to give a sense of exclusivity, which in my opinion makes so many of us messed up in the head.
All the information is out there in books that have been around for years (which I’m sure Derren has read many of).
