With the recent murder of Dr George Tiller flaring up the pro-life debate in the US, HBO released this rather disturbing documentary about a group called The Army of God a pro-life group bonded together by the Internet, by organized rallies, and by a common belief that abortions must be stopped at all costs. There is some quite harrowing footage in this documentary -and it’s not short – so be warned.

My God. This stuff is truly frightening. An unpleasant video to view, but a necessary one: something needs to be done about this. *shocked*
religion always seems to be to blame for something lately.
How can such irrationality even be biologically possible?
omg. I knew they were strange but i didn’t realise they were that bad! How could they say to kill people who have had abortions. How can outdated biblical rules be good guidelines in this new modern reality. I hope the idiots get a nasty nasty punishment.
I have a serious question for some of you UK’ers..
Dont you look at the us in the USA sometimes and just think “what the hell is wrong with those people”? Tell me you guys have problems like this too cause sometimes, honestly, I feel like I live in a nation of crazy people. Is it hard to imigrate to the UK? I’m a hard worker :p
These people scare and anger me SO MUCH. Freedom of reproductive choice is really one of my hot-button topics.
They want to save the ‘babies’? Their damn logic is broken. Save the babies?
Save them to be left in dumpsters by desperate teenagers?
Save them to be abused by people who never wanted to be parents?
Save them to serve to remind their mothers of rape, of incest?
Save them to be left to fend for themselves in orphanages, because they aren’t of the preferred race, gender or level of perfection to be adopted?
Save them to suffer from debilitating birth defects, living in pain until they finally die after a few years?
A fetus doesn’t have the ability to think or to feel pain yet. A fetus, as far as it even has any self-awareness, had lived a pleasant little existence, unaware of any suffering. To end it there isn’t cruel.
To allow unwanted children to be born into suffering, only because you want to make a point? THAT is cruel.
To kill people, or even to force sentient, fully grown people (oh, wait, they don’t seem to consider women people — my bad) to undergo unsafe procedures that could end in a horribly painful death — that’s not just cruel, it’s unjustifiable in any way, shape or form.
Oh, and by the way — the bible does not consider abortion murder. According to the Old Testament, inducing miscarriage is a property crime against the fetus’ father. There’s all sorts of things wrong with that idea, as well, but it just shows you how well they know their Holy Book, right?
Great, I just typed a long and angry response to that video, hit submit, and it seems to have disappeared into the void… I’ll type it up again later. For now, let me just say that these people are idiots, the worst of the worst, and their logic is severely flawed to say the least.
@hansen We have crazies too – I expect you just don’t hear about them as much. (E.G – Nick Grifin wants to build walls inside towns separating the different races from each other)
this is where religious belief starts to escalate and works against its own ethics.
Hm…seeing the comments i think i better now watch it? Else my ranting quotes have to open up again, eeck!
not”…obviously
I’m in favor of quality of life … and did have an abortion myself way back .. I encountered a few of those back then as well who thought I should give it up for adoption and such … everything was better than abortion …
So dont wank boys … and perhaps they can stop eggs from freeing itself each month … it such a waste of potential life … All sperm must be collected immediately … to give life … Come on with those eggs …
Geeeezzz … Pro life .. up my ass ..
I like/don’t like this one:
@phillis (and hansen)- Is abortion specifically this heated in England? Are providers afraid for their lives?
Oops- didn’t show up-

@ Rebecca – nah, no one really gives a monkeys here.
As an American raised in the South, I have two points. One is about our founding. Of course much of our history is about later immigrations, but, it is drilled into us that the first ones to come to America where seeking religious freedom. This ties a sort of self-righteousness closely with nationalism.
Also, I cannot understate, nor even quite articulate, the way one’s mind works under the influence of fear of a supernatural force. There’s the idea that everything will fall apart as an individual, in a family, or nationally if we don’t have our ducks in a row. We are told by the leaders in the churches to read the Bible literally, which, of course can lead to all kinds of specifics being taken out of context (when, obviously, seeing it as a whole negates the specifics). That something will fall apart or that we can actually have any real control over our circumstances is a powerful motivator. The guilt and self-blame one feels when we “don’t have enough faith” is damaging (for a time). And, then, you have to remove yourself from the company of people and the institutions you’ve been in, which can be very alienating, especially because you know they are pitying you, think you are a fool, or even are disgusted by you.
Not going to watch the video so can’t comment on it directly but it reminded me of something.
When I was at secondary school we were shown a video of an abortion in what, in hindsight, must have been a pro life film as it was very graphic (I won’t go into details) and was of an abortion that was pretty far on into the pregnancy (possibly as far as they can go before they won’t do it.). At the time I don’t recall mentioning this to my parents, we were all too young to realise what we’d been shown and no big deal was made of it but remembering it now as an adult I can’t belive they were allowed to show such a biased propaganda filled film to a bunch of naive easily manipulated young teens. Shocking really.

Isn’t that a case of the pot calling the kettle black? Very strange, then again only in America.
Hey, my post has reappeared from the void!
At the risk of being flippant about a serious issue, I think Monty Python puts this whole sorry culture war into some kind of satirical perspective…

I’m struck by the courage that the doctors and other healthcare staff have, to keep going despite all this. They could move into a less dangerous field, but they deal with harassment and threats and serious danger in order to keep providing terminations to women who need them.
