So we’ve finally updated the blog. In case you were confused before you are now looking at the official Derren Brown blog. It’s no longer just Coops’ blog – we had to take it off him for being naughty – however he will be putting in an appearance once the tour is over.

We made lots of upgrades and hope you like them. If not, just tell us we suck and we’ll be happy to cry in a corner. Big thanks to Mr Brain who re-coded it and most of all Abeo for doing the leg-work whilst I concentrated on finishing up the new art site (and re-ordered my wardrobe) which should be launching in about a week.

For those of you who regularly post – get yourself a gravatar here which will give you a picture next to your comments.

59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot

Our good friend (and Britain’s most gorgeous psychologist) Professor Richard Wiseman has published another masterpiece. I caught Derren reading a copy and got quite upset I was the last to know it was finally available:

In “59 Seconds”, psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman presents a fresh approach to change that helps people achieve their aims and ambitions in minutes, not months. From mood to memory, persuasion to procrastination, and resilience to relationships, Wiseman outlines the research supporting this new science of rapid change, and describes how these quick and quirky techniques can be incorporated into everyday life. Think a little, change a lot.

This title helps to: discover why even thinking about going to the gym can help you keep in shape; learn how pot plants make you more creative; and, find out why putting a pencil between your teeth instantly makes you happier.

‘At last, a self-help guide that is based on proper research. Perfect for busy, curious, smart people’ – Simon Singh

‘A triumph of scientifically proven advice over misleading myths of self-help. Challenging, uplifting and long overdue’ – Derren Brown.

ENIGMA Competition winner.

Well done to all of you who entered. The winner was Aziz who sent in an amazing skateboard render – we almost couldn’t believe he’d done it. Some of the entries were just fantastic your a talented lot. However some of you are downright filthy minded and rude (but thats why I like you!).

Will post all the entries AFTER the magic day – until then you’ll just have to wait – otherwise they wouldn’t be a surprise for Coops. Anyone wanting to send in a card of hello can do so remember – it’s the 3rd – contact Phillis for details.

Well done Aziz.

FINAL COMPETITION ON MONDAY.

Darvas – The door to hell

According to Wikipedia “In 1971, while drilling for natural gas in Darvaza, Turkmenistan, the ground on which the drilling rig was placed collapsed, leaving a large gaping hole exposed with a diameter of around 60 meters. To avoid poisonous gases coming out of the hole, it was decided to let the gases burn. As of 2008, gases in the underground cavern are still burning without interruption. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell.”

We’ve seen other reports saying it was from Soviet drilling in the 1950′s. Either way someone decided to burn it and it’s been burning for a long time.

Psychoville

photo1

I spent yesterday afternoon at Reece Shearsmith’s surprisingly leafy and sunny place watching the entire series of Psychoville. It’s extremely good – I’m sure fans of The League will be delighted. The performances are excellent and the writing absolutely spot-on. I really loved it. In particular don’t miss the fourth episode.

I brought biscuits, crisps and sandwiches for us, and left feeling like a fat pig.

This picture shows us in his magic den. He has in there a formidable collection of old books on spiritualism which he beat me to in an auction a while back. I covet them, and can’t believe I let them go. I think I hate him for that.

Last night, with the passing of Jackson, was one of those ‘I remember where I was’ moments. I found out at stage door, from some friends, and there was much discussion over post-show dinner. It is added to my list: Diana’s death happened when I was getting ready to go to London to attend the Bandler/McKenna NLP course. 9/11 was sat in an LA hotel room glued to the set. Those moments are somehow inextricably linked to mundane surroundings, as if everything becomes a little heightened at those times.

And lets have a little moment for Farah Fawcett too. I remember what I was doing then: I was online reading about Michael Jackson’s death.

Women ‘happiest at 28′

Researchers discovered women feel most confident and happy with their love life and body shape shortly before they reach 30. It is also the period in their life when they enjoy the best sex – but the happiness is relatively shortlived.

Because by the time they have turned 30 they start worrying about growing old and developing grey hair and wrinkles. A spokesman for home hair colour brand Clairol Perfect 10, which carried out the study of 4,000 women, said: “Everything in life hits its peak at some point, and nearly reaching your thirties isn’t so bad now. (hmmm – PD)

How to give commands – talk in to the right ear

Next time you want something, direct your request to your target’s right ear. In experiments performed at disco, a team of Italian researchers and their female accomplice tried just that approach. Her mission: to bum a smoke:

“If she spoke into your right ear, you would be twice as likely to give her a cigarette than if she asked by your left ear,” according to a new study that employed this methodology in the clubs of Pescara, Italy.
“Of 88 clubbers who were approached on the right, 34 let the researcher bum a smoke, compared with 17 of 88 whom she approached on the left,” reports Wired.com.
