News Blast

A lot of you have sent in links about personality reading. Well “research” like this and this is very dubious – in fact it has been shown to be a marketing scam in the past – so be suspicious in the future when your told that how you hold your drink proves – well – NOTHING!

A lot of you emailed about the 2ft Indian teenager, whilst Europe’s oldest man, Henry Allingham, has celebrated becoming a teenager for the second time around as he marked his 113th birthday.

A giant rubbish dump was found in the Atlantic ocean, don’t worry about the fish as they dont feel pain - or do they? This happened whilst search teams were looking for the French airliner that went missing without a trace, was it the storm or the fact two of the world’s “most prominent” illegal arms trade and international drug trafficking foes were onboard.

Lots of questions about why Derren doesn’t use twitter - maybe this is the reason why. Thanks to all those who are sending in pics from the tour to the Facebook page. The Enigma London run kicks off on the 15th – some weekday tickets still available but thinning out so pairs are becoming hard to find on some dates - grab yours here.

Oh and Penguins are being gay.

Remember if you have a link that’s not face of Jesus found in <<insert food item>> then send it to Phillis here.

Being sociable is good for your health – if you’re a baboon

Female baboons that form strong social bonds have longer-lived offspring. The need to maintain such relationships may be one of the factors that drove the evolution of bigger brains in humans.

Baboons that live in close social groups are healthier and have longer-lived children, according to scientists. The research supports the idea that close human groups are good for mental and physical wellbeing and sheds light on when group-living might have evolved among our ancestors.

The conclusions come from a 15-year study of a group of baboons in the Moremi Game Reserve of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Led by Robert Seyfarth and Dorothy Cheney of the University of Pennsylvania, the observations were carried out for seven hours a day, six days a week between 1992 and 2007. The observers monitored the reproductive lives of 66 adult females during this time.

How much of our humanity are we prepared to cede to machines? This is a dilemma of the future, but it’s not much of a concern for Erik Ramsey. Erik can’t move. He can’t blink his eyes. And he hasn’t said a word since 1999. But now, thanks to an electrode that was surgically implanted in his brain and linked to a computer, his nine-year silence is about to end.

Woman in exorcism “acted like lion”

A Wainuiomata woman killed during a botched exorcism had been acting like a lion and speaking in “puzzles” after being possessed by spirits from a stolen statue, the High Court at Wellington has been told. Nine people, including five aunts and an uncle, were charged with manslaughter after water poured on to her face to lift a makutu, or curse, got into her lungs.

The video-taped police interview of the slain woman’s aunt and co-accused, Angela Orupe, said her niece had been “fighting with her grandmother, acting like a lion and trying to claw her”. The makutu targeted her cousin, who took the statue, but affected Moses because she was weaker, Orupe said. She described the lion as an “ugly statue”, about 60cm high and “very, very old”. Two family members stole it from outside a Greytown pub after a drinking session.
