“I forget everything,” says World Memory Champion Ben Pridmore. ”I walk into a room and forget what I am doing there, open the fridge and wonder why I am looking in there. I am famously bad at being able to remember people’s names and faces.”
His record in an hour is an astonishing 27 packs – 1,404 cards. Other records he can lay claim to include memorising a single pack of cards in 26.28 seconds; memorising in 15 minutes an 819-digit number; memorising in 30 minutes a binary number of 4,140 digits.
Note: Derren’s record is just above this but unfortunately he is banned from these competitions as it is deemed “unfair” for him to enter.

memorising a binary number. that has to be hard. i picture myself laughing a lot..lololoollllooolll
surely DB can\’t be banned though? I would imagine that these folks are using very similar techniques to the ones he outlines in his latest book.
Haha! That is brilliant. He messed up half way through, but i suppose he can be forgiven for that!
Imagine having that technique, you\’d have to creative to use it in a way which could of be of great benefit.
Garhol, I think that part might have been a joke.
Hmmm. DB is banned from such competitions ? How completely bizarre. He’s like Steve Wiebe to Pridmore’s Billy Mitchell (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0923752/).
What’s the full reason behind Derren being banned? Surely these other people could use similar techniques to him. Is it just cos he’s famous?
You can see the difference in methods — the journalist is trying to consciously picture each card and memorize it that way, while the expert glances at it and stores it without all the conscious effort. Part of that is obviously that this is routine for him, so it’s less stressful, but I think that a large part of why the journalist goes astray after the 9th card is that he’s trying TOO hard, thus stressing himself out and forgetting his card.
At least, that’s how it’s always been for me — I’m rubbish at tests if I get stressed out about them, because that makes me forget everything I’ve studied for them (and the harder I try to remember, the more I forget). If I force myself to relax and think of something else, the knowledge will creep back in, ‘in the corner of my mind’s eye’, so to speak, and I can use it again.
At the risk of sounding absolutely bizarre-crazy, memory, in that way, is kind of like cats. If you chase after them, they’ll run off, but if you sit quietly and pay them no mind, they’ll come to you of their own accord.
Yeah, what reasoning/explanation is there to him being banned?
Isn’t there already a www bann in casino’s for err…hahaa…and rightly so
i thought that the ban might be a joke but knowing how some people have approached DB’s fun and games it’s not unthinkable that they might have taken exception to him entering.
They can be brought back to ‘normal’ life. Plainly psychology. There is a backdraft ofcourse, to all of this.
It’s what they already are busy with regarding men, there slightly autistic like structure. Not all ..
Psychoses is close to these structures.
It’s working/living in extremes. Combine things and you will be more in the middle. Sort of.
Some handle it better than other.
