Channel 4 is to begin showing programmes in 3D within weeks as part of moves which could change the way people watch TV in the future. The channel will air a range of shows including footage of the Queen’s Coronation and a new magic spectacular from Derren Brown using the technology. This comes amid growing optimism that the moves could help revolutionise British TV viewing after earlier attempts at 3D television failed to catch on.
Sky has already announced it is planning to launch Europe’s first 3D TV channel next year that will require a special TV set. Channel 4 is using different technology which will mean people can view the more lifelike content on their normal televisions. Channel 4 will be giving away special glasses, with amber and blue lenses, in supermarkets ahead of the shows it has lined up for the project. Channel 4 itself will air a week of prime-time 3D content this autumn and if the move proves to be a success, it could become a regular feature on the channel.
Channel 4 has done a deal with Sainsbury’s to stock the glasses for free in most of its major stores in the week before the programmes air. Those doing their supermarket shopping over the internet will also be handed a free pair when their shopping is delivered.
The highlight of Channel 4′s week of 3D programmes will be two hour-long documentaries featuring footage of the Queen. One will show 3D colour newsreel of her Coronation in 1953 while a second will look at a Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle earlier this summer. Illusionist Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular will feature specially shot tricks from a range of magicians, plus archive 3D footage.

Derren in 3D…..fantastic! I must get me some of those glasses now!!
LC x
Where do I get a pair of those funky specs?
Derren in 3D….fantastic! I must get me some of those glasses now!

Damn, I’ll be going out to Sainsbury’s soon then ^^
*Check’s calendar but it is not 1st April, so it must be true!*
is this some elaborate prank?
i’m sceptical
mmm sounds rather interesting Derren in 3d wow
When will sainsburys be stocking these cool 3D glasses?!!
x
Wow, I’ll be getting myself down to Sainsbury’s pronto! Derren and his magic in 3D. What a treat!
this is excellant! please keep us up to date on when this will happen!
Alice in Wonderland
Apologies about my message appearing twice, the site crashed and I didn’t think the previous one had posted. So, sorry about that (I’m having a bit of a thing about seeing messages being posted twice today for some reason….)
The only thing I find with wearing 3D glasses is that when you actually wear glasses anyway (as I do), it can get a little bit difficult, cos I literally can’t see much otherwise. But to watch Derren in 3D, I’ll willingly persevere!
LC x
Awww, not fair
having one eye none of that works for me any more. I used to love going to imax but its all pointless now
Why is it that I’m just thinking that it is one giant hoax to make us wear glasses that only make us look silly?
I’m becoming more sceptical as the days go on, although it’s very exciting if it is true!
It’s a case of ‘I’ll believe it when I see it,’ methinks!
It sounds good, but I think the idea of everyone putting on glasses to watch TV is very anti-social, as if TV wasn’t anti-social enough already
The elderly guy in the audience is ‘Hole Tempting’
Oh, in moderation I think it’ll be fun!
LC x
^ Lol, bang on!
They’re all watching the smutty movie shown in the post below in 3D :-O
LOL – I couldn’t have married those comments better if I tried – well done, even if not intentional.
Just when I thought the man couldn’t get any better. Seeing his goatee in 3D is almost as good as meeting him in the flesh again!
David Glover, Channel 4 science commissioner, said: ‘Watching period 3D documentary footage is about as close to time travel as you can get.”
Maybe we can go back 20mins to Scottish time!
i feel there is sumthing more to this other then the old guy tempting me with his hole hahaha
im going bk to luk at the pic to c if theres something more to it
Wow how awesomely retro do those glasses look, i already have a pair..SO LET THE 3DNESS START!
are you sure the glasses are not going to be in red and black?
Oh, I remember those 3d’s from back then, on tv and in the cinema once. The glasses itself were already great fun. I don’t miss dimension on tv right now, but hey .. might be nice towatch now and then. Those cinema’s which give you movies all around you .. I think those more cool. They make me dizzy and such, certain scenes (flying above water and stuff like that).
Vision after having watched a little too much 3D will be a bit .. surreal and slightly too colourfull .. Maybe your brain wil have trouble getting back swiftly without triggering unwanted side effects to your normal state.
In the cinema, not that they mentioned this here, you should not be in front row … you get it all in your face ..
Watching 3D with spec’s gives a lot of people a headache, they should rather design a holographic cinema where the action takes part in the cinema and not on the screen. But wait a minute they already have, its called theatre.
I must say I’m roughly this sceptical:
but if this really is real (the fact that it’s in the Mail has formed a chink in my scepticism armour), would anybody be able to send me some glasses to me in Switzerland? Maybe Derren will do it knowing that he’s got such dedicated fans overseas.
I had some arrows demonstrating how sceptical I am but they appear not to have materialised. Never mind.
hmmm… I was a little cagey about this but ColorCode 3-D glasses do exist and enable 3D colour pictures on a normal colour display as described.
I can believe that 3D footage of the coronation exists but I can’t find any other references to it (only 3D stills).
I can’t find any mention of this on the channel4 website either:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=ColorCode+3D+glasses&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=
Or sainsbury;s
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=site:sainsburys.co.uk+(colorcode+OR+(“channel+4″+glasses+)+OR+”3D+glasses”+)&btnG=Search&meta=
But if this is possible, as it seems to be, it would really be an own goal if channel4 were to organise a hoax for the sake of a Derren Brown experiment.
Aww…wish I could see it! I’m not a big fan of 3D, but I’m sure Derren could have turned me around.
If the coronation wasn’t filmed in 3D, how can it be broadcast in 3D?
Why is everything on here looking suspicious to me now?
If it’s true, we don’t have a sainsbury’s near us. Wouldn’t it be better to give them out with newspapers like in the 80′s when your comic would come with a pair and an ‘amazing’ 3d story inside. (They never worked!)
I’m going with not true and something to do with a competition or The Events.
x
this is gonna be amazing
The Old Man In The Audience Has His Glasses On The Wrong Way Round So The 3D Wouldnt Work For Him So I Dont Know What Hes Trying To Touch
It’s all true – http://www.channel4.com/programmes/themes/3d-week-programmes
These specs are BLUE and AMBER….. Never seen them before…No use if you use red/green or red/blue… so you NEED to go to sainsburys to get some !!! Clever stunt, it will draw more customers there
Haha at the old man! his glasses are the wrong way!
i love derren brown and i cant wait to see his 3D spectacular. im all set to
Try living in the highland where sainsburys doesn’t exist, We will have to watch a fuzzy magic show
I live in Ireland we don’t have Sainsbury’s here. Does it matter that much if you don’t have 3D glasses?
Dam I cant believe that I missed this show, gutted.
