Backmasking is where embedded messages work both forwards and backwards. Possibly the best example is Led Zeppelins Stairway To Heaven track – when sung normally then reversed makes no sense whilst the original clearly seems to work in reverse.

By the way, I had to be very careful then not to use the words ‘Derek Acorah’ an ‘backward’ in the same sentence.
I understand that if you play a Windows Vista CD backwards in your PC you can hear a sound that is supposed to be satan telling you to kill them all…..

I pity the first person who listened to that led zeppelin song backwords TRYING to find some kind of vague satan references. If you just listened to it backwards without the words being there you’d never even notice anything.
In a utada hikaru song she uses backmasking in certain parts.

But try listening to these vids without looking at the lyrics you’re meant to be hearing. I think reading the supposed lyrics makes you hear them regardless.
Perhaps the best and cleverest example of Back Masking is by 1970s Canadian prog-rockers Klaatu. Their track Silly Boys, on their 1978 album, Sir Army Suit, is in fact made up of bits of earlier songs played backwards interspersed with linking phrases sung through a vocoder. Most of the reversed songs were from their debut album 3:47 EST.
The lyrics for Silly Boys were printed backwards on the album lyric sheet and written to sound like what was being sung backwards thus making it all the more convincing.
Even the album’s title, Sir Army Suit, is the reverse of a lyric from a previous track – Anus of Uranus!!

“wonder why it’s always Satan who pops up in these things though?” If somebody with that backwards recording tool and some time could just figure out which words or parts of words read beackwards make the word Satan they’d probably be something really common.
Even though I agree that the backwards satanic massages were not made on purpose the fact that you sang it again and it didn’t sound the same can also mean that they purpousely put stresses on particular words and places in the song to make it sound evil backwards.
And let’s not forget all the backwards parts of Beatles songs that reveal that Paul is dead!
Lots of us backmask through life .. dont make sense either, unless you play them backward .. ehehehe …

When I was preteen my brother and sister (both much older than I am) were born again and tried very hard to save my soul and bring me into the light. They gave me taped sermons of how evil rock and roll is, my brother actually played this album backwards for me so I could hear Satan’s temptations then he took all his LPs and burned them in the garden. I watched my siblings go some kind of mental, while my parents sat back and let them – they were determined that we find our way in spirituality and merely observed. Twenty years later and they’ve both come down off the Holy Roller-Coaster and are lingering about in crystal healing and ghost hunting kind of spirituality. For Christmas last year, I bought my brother the complete Led Zeppelin collection on CD. He was psyched.
My personal favourite is Ozzy’s old “Your mother sells whelks in Hull”.
My husband’s been wanting a shed for ages. He’s going to be mightly pissed off to learn that even satan has one.
