This is the cover of “The Atheist’s Guide To Christmas”, Britain’s first atheist charity book initiative, which Ariane Sherine has been editing on a voluntary basis for the last six months. The full advance and all royalties from the book are going to the UK HIV charity Terrence Higgins Trust.
The book features contributions from 42 of the UK’s most entertaining atheist scientists, comedians, philosophers, journalists and writers, including:
Richard Dawkins, Derren Brown, Charlie Brooker, David Baddiel, Ben Goldacre, Josie Long, Richard Herring, Simon Singh, Brian Cox, Jenny Colgan, AC Grayling, Simon Le Bon, Claire Rayner, Robin Ince, Jon Holmes, Zoe Margolis, Phil Plait, Mitch Benn, Lucy Porter, Adam Rutherford
… and many, many more, all of whom have kindly given their time, thought and talent for free. The book has six sections: Stories, Arts, Science, Philosophy, How To and Events. It’s funny, thoughtful and hopefully quite beautiful in places, and also contains quotes from great atheists throughout history.
It is published on October 1 and available to pre-order now. It would be brilliant if we could see it enter the Top Ten Bestsellers in its first week of release, raising thousands for THT.

I just stick with the good old “Christmas is a time for family” line when people ask how I can celebrate Christmas and not believe in God. I don’t celebrate Christmas, I celebrate time with my family and friends
Wow … a book featuring at least 3 of my favourite atheists… That goes straight on my wishlist.
Hope it’s all new material…
Fab, I saw this advertised on Richard Dawkin’s website, definately going to get it, and would love to see it on the bestsellers list, would make a nice Christmas pressie…
that’s annoying – i’m sure it.s a great book but i’m gonna have to buy it anyway just to read derrens bit.
Pre-ordered it! Sound ace.
Looks good, I’m suprised Hitchens isn’t contributing, although I suppose he’s technically American now.
I’m with Mike, i’m an atheist who loves the christmas holidays because it’s a great family time….oh, and prezzies of course!!
fantastic. something to prove all those religious people wrong who claim atheists have no care for other human beings. I live down under i hope the shipping cost isnt too much.
Just pre-oredered 4 for various atheists in my family
A world without religion is a world without a prayer!
Amazed that David Baddiel is a athiest
Have ordered one, not just to read what Derren & others have written but also because it’s for such a good cause too.

think this will make a good “secret santa” pressie for my boss – whos a devout christian and whose brother is a catholic priest?? or will i get i fired??? *pre-orders the book neway….*
Just pre-ordered nine copies! That’s my Christmas presents sorted for this year!
I’m lucky enough to have seen Derren’s contribution and it’s one of the loveliest things I’ve ever read. Have ordered 3 copies.
I for one have never forgotton the true meaning of christmas. Lots of food, wine, friends, family, sitting down on the sofa watching a james bond film after too much pudding, and raising a glass to the man who christmas is all about – Santa.
Paul B xx
well, christmas was kinda hijacked by the christians (terrible band) and rebranded…it was originally a pagan celebration i believe – where you eat all the good stuff from the harvest, spent time with the family, swopped prezzies and made a little love…all good things…
then they had to go and spoil it by saying JC was spawned on the exact same day…well, lah-di-dah….
though, i do find it ever so rude when the jewish and muslim people take christmas time off…have the courage of your convictions and all that…
Christmas was never about god, argh!
Yes it was the pagan ( correct me if i\’m wrong) or the romans, 25th December is the birthday of Mithras.
Not Jesus… -.-
I will order myself one looks like an interesting read.
/rant!
Sounds nice, not too expensive either, will sell good I think. Without a cc I wont be able to buy it .. but hey .. something else to look forward too in the not so nearby future … Oh man, do I keep the drive on the inside …
It’s true .. if you can buy or have anything you want or wish for .. what are you then going to do and see? Yes, depressing yourself volunteerly is the next thing then .. so we are all the same. Depression is not always truely depressed till the core .. it’s more a way of speaking. If you have ti all .. you will have to devote your life to others … or start a company or start to see to life as work your not so normal serious self .. .. Fullfillment cn become emptyness ..
I am willing to take that challenge though …. I have a steady goal …. a clear focus
Phil Plait? Since when is he british? I like him, nonetheless…
Miss G, ask your local library to get the books you want to read. If they have the budget, they will get it for you or look in other libraries for the titles you might like. And if you need to get out for free, go to some museums. We went to the Science museum last weekend and to the British Museum this week and it didn’t cost a red cent. We have lots of things sitting on our doorsteps and we forget about them. And the best thing I ever did for myself was start street running. Oxygen and all the lovely things that come with getting out and feeling the sun in your hair will help with that focus. I’ve learned only in the past few years that there really are more important things than money. There’s nothing wrong in trying to make more though!
Whoops, ‘MS’ G. Soz.
I see it listed in the UK. I certainly hope it’s offered in American bookstores and outlets as well.
The book’s wrong. If there’s probably no God then they’re Agnostic. Surely there IS no God for Atheists. Courage and Convictions and all that etc.
Someone said “A world without religion is like a world without a prayer”, are you serious? Isn’t that somewhat the point of Atheism? That, for one thing, you don’t have to spend your time fretting or beleiving in higher power that isn’t listening to you? What a complete waste of a life.
Derren Brown, Charlie Brooker, Richard Dawkins and Ben Goldacre!!! everyone will gift me this for Christmas, I\’ will keep one and then I\’ll earn a fortune on Ebay
