A slimy, glob-like creature dubbed Gollum has terrified children after it slithered out of a lake and clambered over the rocks towards them.
The young teenagers were playing by the waterfront in a Panama lake near Cerro Azul when the bald beast emerged from a cave behind a waterfall. They started screaming as it shuffled out “as if to attack them”.
Locals told Panama news the monster was like “Gollum from Lord of the Rings”. One said: “I have only seen that creature once before – and it was in the Tolkien film.” But in a “desperate bid to defend themselves” four children grabbed rocks from the beach and hurled them at the beast.

If anyone has any follow up to this story (haox / photoshop / clever make-up job) please can you send us your links. – Thanks – Phillis.

It looks like a Pokémon…
- thank god for a serious answer – hairless sloth – I’m mean seriously!
– Phillis
iv heard its a mutated sloth
big fat con gotta be
Awww, poor lake monster
I found this…..http://observers.france24.com/en/content/20090921-strange-unidentified-creature-found-panama
…i was only just getting over the parasite eating the fish tongue thing. Now I have this thing to haunt my nightmares.
Maybe it is just Kirk Cameron’s offspring from his secret affair with an eggplant…?
Shortly before his bashing, distributing of Darwin’s Origin Of Species, the news would not have done him and his banana partner any good. lol
Ah, I’m mean… I know.
I’ve seen this somewhere else but lost the link. It had more photos, and compared it in size and shape to a sloth. It does indeed look like a bald sloth that has been washed ashore (not killed as the children in the story report). There’s a similar link to the origional one I saw here http://www.ufodigest.com/news/0909/sloth.php
Here’s a CNN item on it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEb3rmxPWq0
Contrary to the strapline I believe the creature has been identified as a sloth.
In a similar vein, a strange, pulsating being was found in a sewer beneath a town in North Carolina…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIyJIhGpXTY
Turned out to be a rare type of worm colony!
Most websites have the creature down as being a hairless sloth. When you see some full body images of it, you’d probably agree.

I believe it was found to be a poor hairless sloth
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2196767/mystery_creature_from_panama_cryptid.html
I spotted this on the interwebs the other day – I just feel so sorry for the little fella. All pink and pasty.
Anyway, explained away quite convincingly here if you want the illusion shattered! :
http://forgetomori.com/2009/criptozoology/a-panamanian-montauk-monster-that-almost-were/
Looks like the baby from Eraserhead.
I’ve seen it in another movie. It also had a role in David Lynch’ ‘Eraserhead’!
a hairless sloth.
I can’t be sure, but I think the general consensus is that the “monster” was, in fact, a shaven sloth or something…
Wasn’t this a sloth, missing all it’s fur?
I seem to remember a story similar to this and that’s what it was
Of course it’s not a full photo so I’m not sure if this is the same thing, or even what it looks like in full if it’s different.
So my guess is hairless sloth – probably sick and the lake water didn’t help
http://www.fox8.com/wjw-mystery-beast-txt,0,2042848.story
Its a two toed sloth apparently, probably some kind of genetic fluke making it bald or mange.
Mystery solved!
I feel sorry for it, it looks ill in that picture…. or is it dead
Experts believe the creature to be a sloth which has lost all of it’s fur.
what the f*!k i dont know if this is photoshop as i HAVE spent hours on photoshop from time to time before and ‘fireworks mx’ software, this… “Well it could be photoshopped,” clever if it is but i dont think so :/, what the hell is that..?
Sadly this turns out to be quite sad, and further reason why we are all fucked as a species. “Look, there is something different. Let’s get together and beat it to death.” Hoorah for us.

- “Naked” and “Sloth” used in a headline that’s not about me – well well! – Phillis
I read that this was a sloth. There was a similar scare in Montauk – the “Montauk Monster”. Apparently it is a sloth born without fur. If this is the case thee children stoned an innocent animal to death.
It’s a hairless sloth:

Looks like its a bald sloth or some sort of weird sloth crossbreed. I doesnt look like its been beaten to death tho.
Judging by its skeleton afterwards it definitely has sloth-like features.

Looks like my dad after a few too many drinks
I’ve seen this reported in a few places – if it’s real, it’s a shame it was killed
I’m inclined to go with this explanation: http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/09/panamanian_blue_hill_monster.php
It was rumoured to be a sloth with a birth defect that meant it didn’t grow any fur.
If you look at a picture of a sloth, then this you can see certain similarities.
Joe.
The poor thing – being beaten to death with sticks by a bunch of teenagers is no way to go!
“Desperate bid to defend themselves”? How about simian urge to kill what they didn’t understand? The thing hadn’t even attacked them, they were just scared of how it looked…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w9JCt2jYb4 this is a news report showing full sized image of it, it look like a total hoax!!
Didn’t this turn out be to a dead sloth, which was either a fetus or had lost it’s hair in the process of decaying?
This is the last thing I read about it:
http://skepchick.org/blog/2009/09/the-panama-monster-is-not-a-monster/
Wasn’t this found to be a shaved sloth or something?
Surely This Cant Be Real?????????? I Mean Come On!!!
It turned out to be a hair less sloth. .
aww. I love gollum.
So I take it the kids killed it then (looking at that pic) ? Poor thing, did it do them any harm? Believe me, there are some teenagers I wouldn’t chucking rocks at!
LC x
Stupid kids
come on. thats photo shop. its that dinosaur from that kids show in the 90s
I’d LOVE to think this was real – would probably be a fascinating creature – but it’s probably a hoax. The picture looks too DEAD…I know that sounds weird, but it looks like someone has tried too hard to make it look dead, making its tongue loll out like that.
It’s a sloth.
http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/09/panamanian_blue_hill_monster.php
There’s loads of new creatures popping up, there was a documentory in BBC 1 last week and they discovered 2 new mamals and hundreds of insects. ‘Global warming’ or, natural cosmological event, is changing our environment to a noticable point where we’re now seeing it all around us. More and more solar winds will affect earth and we will change, not only mentally but perhaps physically? The whole planet. including the human race is in for a rough ride, but the results will be amazing. People need to wake up and realise that we are a human race, together..
On another note to Mr. Derren Brown, saying that psychic doesn’t exist, is irelevant, you need to inform why. People have abilities beyond the currently known. Everyone has a collected conscious, we just use it in a stupid way.
more here: http://www.makli.com/mystery-creature-panama-007685/
The human race is a giant organism, we share information and feelings through which we largely influence eachother, through people to people. We share awareness of reality through this, but we are infected, through each cell’s manipulation and hate to eachother in society; but that’s just how it’s built.
looks like a sloth? http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/09/panamanian_blue_hill_monster.php?utm_source=networkbanner&utm_medium=link
It’s a sloth without it’s hair – it probably had mange.
http://www.orble.com/images/animalembryo051.jpg
This is a case of mistaken identity. It’s not a monster. Finding the link for you now, Phillis.
Oh my god they killed Nessie! The bastards
What the hell’s our Scottish monster doing in Panama?
Typical though, we discover a new endangered species and our first instinct is to lob rocks at it…
Someone call the WWF (and I don’t mean the world wrestling federation)
It’s obviously a sloth. Animals often loose all their hair when they die in water.
- or a Pokemon. C’mon people let’s have some serious scientific debate!
– Phillis
Just read the sloth theory…It doesn’t look much like one in the photo above, but if you look at some of the other photos featured in the links, there’s no mistaking it. The hooked claws and long arms are a dead give-away. The only question now is, why did it have no fur? Some people are suggesting some sort of disease, but I’ve got a horrible feeling the poor thing was killed, shaved, and then photographed for a deliberate hoax. It’s enough to disgust you with human nature…
Looks like a dinosaur bald of scales. How very odd. Nessie? Hmm.
Thats so sad
I’d like to point out, though, that it bears no resemblence to Gollum. In my opinon anyway. Hmmm.
As long as it’s not known what it is.. It’s just a news filler until then.
Mark
@Phillis It being a Pokémon is a feasible theory in my opinion. Definitely more likely than a hairless sloth. Sloths are most certainly too lazy to take a trip to the barbers for a monthly short back and sides and therefore the idea of a hairless sloth is simply laughable.
Pokémon however come in all forms from hideous to fluffy and that one happens to fall into the former category.
And it’s not exactly Gollum like either. He had the remnants of a comb-over, I’m sure.
think it maybe a hairless sloth phillis, not sure tho.
http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2009/09/panamanian_blue_hill_monster.php?utm_source=editorspicks
is a very good account of this story.
Pokemon? Don’t these kids in Panama get Saturday morning cartoons? You’re supposed to catch it in one of those red and white ball gismos and trade it with friends, not lob rocks at it.
Don’t let them anywhere near yellow chinchillas…
Whatever it is, I hate looking at that photo. Poor thing….it’s almost….demeaning, esp seeing it with it’s tongue hanging out like that. Sorry if I seem soft, I love animals!
I think I’d rather a pic of Gollum had been posted!
LC x
He would’ve got away with it, if it wasn’t for those meddling kids
I don’t appreciate people taking pictures of me while I’m out swimming.
Maybe it was the Feejee Mermaid
@Ellika – HAHAHAH
i completely agree.
i vote pokemon.
eitherway, i feel pretty sorry for it.
poor creature, whatever it was those kids shouldnt have killed it.
It’s a sloth which has no hair somehow :S
And those boys ‘stoning it to death’ poor thing probably searching for some water or food
has anyone else seen the descent? it reminds me a lot of that!!!!
Theory 1 :-
It is a picture of my ex girlfriend, she was an ugly minger too!!
Theory 2 :- Maybe it was an alien from outer space and they just haven’t found the spaceship yet.
Theory 3:- A hairless sloth but, don’t know how it managed to come at them as if to attack, have you seen how slow these animals are?
theory 4:- Maybe it is one of the lizard people David Ike keeps going on about but slightly mutated so it was banished from the underground hideout.
Just my thoughts
Where do all the monsters come from … I never see them .. (apart from those 2 legged creatures ..)
Poor little thing
Don’t know if the kids did kill it but just a note for future, if something is shuffling along, it’s probably not about to launch into a viscious street fighter type attack. So leave the poor wee creature alone.

(Meant ‘vicious’)

I read that it was a sloth that was dying and lost it’s hair because of some reason…I think the links above… bit vague but i can’t remember what it said
Anyways, I feel sorry for it. Doesn’t look like it’s having the time of its life.
I’m not saying anything for sure and I do not have proof, but has anyone seen David Hasselhoff lately?
I mean if you place a hamburger in there somewhere,….. I’m just saying that would check with his agent.
It had to remind me of him or I wouldn’t be writing this now, correct?
Phil
Condemnant et neca quod non intellegunt!

Did they not just think to say hello?
What was it going to do, suck them to death with it’s squidgy gums?
A rampant rabbit looks like it’d do more damage (and some of the others look downright Evil!).
Poor little sod. I understand this could be fake, but it wouldn’t suprise me if it wasn’t.

Monty Python fan , eh!
@ Phil:
Umm.
Not as such (I mean who isn’t really, they’re great). I remember some of their stuff from childhood. Like the invasion of the Traffic cones.
Is that a line from them then? It just came to me.
Lol, if so I’m sorry, wasn’t intentional.
“He’s not the Messiah…” Now that one was

It’s a sloth.
My guess is the kids never even stoned it to death… it was already dead. They probably made the story up to make it sound more interesting than “Washed up New Species Found in Panama”
It died, fell in or was already in the water… decomp and the water made it lose it’s fur (as water often does with dead animals)… it then washed up on the rocks in a state of bald decomp where bloating (stage of decomp) has already set in. All these factors would make it look less like a sloth and more like an alien or Gollum…. plus a sloth making a vicious attack…. I don’t think so… those guys are sloooooooow!
Mr. Woolf/ Phil – Erm, the ‘Rampant Rabbit’ happens to be Ann Summers’ top selling sex toy (so I’m told)! I don’t even want to know how that can do more damage or in what context
@ flapjack
Lol.
I know… that was actually what my initial reference was meant to be to, hence the bracketed bit as well.
I’m just far too polite to explain it in that sort of detail, on a public forum. I’m a good boy.
Perhaps I was also meant/led to say the “Messiah” line for some ‘unknown’ reason though.
But as for how and in what context they can be more dangerous… Well, I’ll leave that to your own imagination.

Hairless sloth.
This is NOT a hoax, is REAL!! Indeed such creature was found and killed in Panama, but none authority has confirmed if is a sloth. Many unknown and unclassified creatures can live in deep caves and underground levels of remote areas, specially in rain forest areas. Creatures that the science ignores and people have no idea about their existences. Probably there´s an entire hiden ecossystem on the underground of this planet, totally unknown. This animal there´s nothing to do with Montauk creature, that possibly is result of US secret military genetic experiments, that have been developed in Montauk base since the ’60s.
