Cool video about the Hubble ultra deep field in 3D. A photo of utter blackness taken in “a patch of sky no bigger than a grain of sand held out out arm’s length.”
The maths are a bit out though as they seem to forget the universe is only 6000 years old.

well, is only a month til our 6005th anniversary? 26th of october at 9am 4004bc. my archaeology lecturers always said it was a bit odd it was the start of term. lol
seriously, good vid though.
The universe has only just created itself a split second ago.
I’m sorry, but I disagree that the universe is only 6000 years old.
- Oh there’s always one! I bet your probably a “scientist”. – Phillis
“Awesome” is a word that gets overused and therefore is undervalued but I think we have just found a new benchmark – Awesome.
Yup, I think I might cry…
Awe inspiring, as beautiful and profound as it is disturbing.
Who needs science fiction?!
confused. :-s
Amazing!
They should cal it the ‘Humbling Telescope’
The sheer arrogance of the human race. Who are we? What are we fighting over on this planet? When are we going to look up and look out and be happy with what we’ve got?
The older I get, the more I want to slip between the atoms. We don’t have to be so frantic, do we? Have we really lost sight of everything wonderful? Is our view of the heavens to be limited to the that of Nike, Intel and Coca Cola logos on flashing billboards? Where has our wonder gone? How many kids – nevermind adults – do you see or hear take in the sharp breath of wonder – inspiration – these days? Not many. Do you remember that beautiful tingling feeling?
Wow
It really does make everything feel ridicules we have infinity to explore ‘ I’ll get right on that after X Factor’. WHAT A WORLD. We need to keep exploring which this should inspire us to do.
this has made me wanna buy my son a telescope for christmas, rather then a Wii….so much wonder and intrigue out there could keep his mind ticking for hours.
impressive indeed!
Absolutely stunning. Just had to react on this. Really awesome in a proper sense of the word…
We are represent the truth of divinity of infinity.
Doesn’t Dawkins say that the creationist accout of 6000 years would make the universe slightly younger than the domestication of the dog. So Dog created the universe… it was a typo all along!
They should have included that bit in Genesis “And lo… Dog created the heavens and the earth, and saw that it was good. And then he had a game of “fetch” with the moon before going for a paddle in the newly created sea. And on the 7th day he was just so flaked out that he slumped in the corner of his doggy basket and nothing got done”
@flapjack – excellent!
Very nice video, the best beauty in this universe.
I also must read more of Dawkins stuff.

interesting simple facts dont seem to matter when you can see this for yourself, more of us out there do they look at us the same way just a star in the sky
the most important image ever taken. (for now at least).
Gosh, now I feel insignificant. The universe is just such a beautiful thing. I wish I could comprehend it.

Just think, there could be something out there, within those galexies looking right back at us!
I have seen the original of this before it was put into 3D, have to say though, i don’t think we will ever truly know how old the universe is.With all the problems and fusses everyone faces each and every day we often forget the true wonders that are not only on this planet but stretch out into the deepest and most amazing universe that this small speck of a planet called Earth resides in, we’re constantly polluting the skies with lights we don’t need and preventing ourselves from seeing our universe and the amazing sights and displays it often puts on for us for free, looking up into the sky at night in an area that is completely free from lights makes you realise just how small we really are, looking at Jupiter on a clear night makes me realise that as it is.
if the universe is infinite, it’s age is infinite also (aka ageless). if the universe is finite, then yes, it has an age. but then it also is a form with edges. if the universe has an edge, what is on the other side?
at some point, something must have come from nothing. at some point, there is infinity. our minds will never comprehend it, we can only realise it…
if there is such thing as an infinite universe then that means that there is infinite probability, infinite earths all with tiny differences, that makes me go funny
Nice video well put together and giving some insight into the vastness of the universe (the type of insight that turns your brain to mush).
Was a bit confused about how we could be recieving light from galaxies travelling ‘faster’ than the speed of light away from us ’till I thought through the fact that what we’re seeing is 13 billion ((or 6,000)) years old and not ‘real-time’, as such.
But the bit about travelling faster than light away from us still does my head in…and all the explanations I can find seem entwined within the ‘dark energy’ explanation, which is physics version of ‘we don’t have a clue so we’ll slap a name on it and apply it as an explanation when we’re stuck’…
…the scientific equivilent of saying ‘God is responsible’
Ah, I love this. Beautiful.
I can’t believe a photon can ‘live’ for this amount of time?!
Christbuckets. Just thinking about each of those galaxies containing hundreds of billions of stars makes me frightened. Tears literally come to my eyes whenever I try to comprehend anything of this scale. It is truly humbling to realise that we occupy such a ridiculously tiny point in the vastness of space. I mean… DAMN
._.
…the scientific equivilent of saying ‘God is responsible’ eh? How about looking at that mathematically. Here’s a peice of technobollocks to get your head around. What if god existed and by definition had also never existed. Both existance and nonexistance might cancel each other out but no… God does not exist but infinite time ( or even infinite 0 spacetime exists) everything is possible (or not or both) . So popping out of the aether is God and their (it’s?) ability to create (by existance and observation alone) the multiverse: all universes, all dimensions; past, present and future. So the question remains… Is god not just a psychological illusion or a socialogical construct but the first ever Boltzmann’s brain. Hey maybe that one created more brains modelled after its own…!?
