Before you flip open that tub of Ben and Jerry’s, be aware that ice cream really can control your brain and say “eat me.”
A U.S. study by UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas has found that fat from certain foods such ice cream and burgers heads to the brain.
Once there, the fat molecules trigger the brain to send messages to the body’s cells, warning them to ignore the appetite-suppressing signals from leptin and insulin, hormones involved in weight regulation — for up to three days.
“Normally, our body is primed to say when we’ve had enough, but that doesn’t always happen when we’re eating something good,” said researcher Deborah Clegg in a statement.
“What we’ve shown in this study is that someone’s entire brain chemistry can change in a very short period of time. Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets “hit” with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin.
“Since you’re not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.”

ouch – them ice cram headaches really sting!
omg no wonder i got through 4 tubs of ben n jerries ice-cream in 8 days!!! lol I think i was addicted =P
That maybe so, but it controls it in such a nice way. Tis a weighty subject, much food for thought. Do you think I could sue B & J ? But then again maybe not, if my arse gets bigger, more room for spanking
@ Jackqueenking – that put a smile on my face, the last comment there
I just can’t comprehend how f*cking amazing our brains are. Madness!
hmm, that would explain my strange cravings then whenever i see a cornetto in a shop…
That changes too with age. The body does signall quite well thought, that you don’t need to eat so much the days after. Also at a younger age, if you listen to your body’s needs. Normally you will be not that close up with yourself down there so you wont hear. Or plainly ignore, another option.
The slightly addictive (short term) appetite for certain types of food (can also be non fatty) can best be OD ed, to make it go away. Otherwise it sticks more to the brain ….. the graving for it. The less you allow yourself, the more you want it. Now we are the parent to ourselves denying us something ….
Different characters leads to different ways of controlling their food system, if controlling is necessary.
That’s really funny. I’ve got to think that some are more susceptible than others though, just like anything else. It does explain though, why my boyfriend has such a thing for the homemade icecream place around the corner from me. He’s so crazy about it, he insists we go there every single time he visits. Due to their shorter hours for autumn, this now means dessert before dinner…and he’s not at all overweight. Funny though, even though they’re so close, I almost never go there by myself–been there maybe twice alone in four years. I only get dragged there with others. (Though I have to admit, the place is damn good.) But I’m just not that tempted.
hmm, – I really have been eating alot of Ice-Cream this summer – No really, alot of Ice-Cream. Now I know why…
Hmmm wonder if the doggie feels the same.
Cute picture
That’s the best photo ever. Fact.

Oh no, it’s way past beddie time and I’m hungry and there’s a vanilla Green and Blacks in the freezer… How could you do this to me!
He’s loving that cone, isn’t he. Look at him, aw… His wee eyes are shut in ecstasy.
i don’t like ice cream so i don’t need to worry
I don’t care about the post…I’m not even going to read it…I love the photo too much! Awwww! : )
P.s. Okay, I will read the post……Definitely true, and it’s probably helped along by the fact that our instincts tell us that anything sweet is safe to eat.
