Intolerance is a bitter beast. There are many groups in America that are subject to discrimination and prejudice, but none are more hated than atheists. Research conducted a couple years ago at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis found that atheists are more distrusted than muslims or homosexuals in the US.
Austin Cline from about.com writes, “EVery single study that has ever looked at the issUe has revealed massive amounts of bigotry and prejudice against atheists in America. The most recent data shows that atheists are more distrUsted and despised than any other minority and that an atheist is the least likely person that Americans would Vote for in a presidential election. It’s not just that atheists are hated, though, but also that atheists seem to represent everything about modernity which Americans dislike or fear.

Great, now i’m hated Because i can find logical reasons to why things and situations happen. Thanks America!
I thought Scientologists were the most hated people in America.

The most intelligent, logical, and most level headed people are the most hated? The next time a religious/deluded person uses their iPhone, visits a doctor, or flies in a plane they would do well to remember that chances are atheist has made that possible.
Derren,
I’ve followed your work for a number of years, and I share similar beliefs (and non-beliefs) with you.
But I wonder (taking into account the wonderfully atheist views expressed in your writings, and in my own mind): are we supposed to be labeled as “Atheists” or “Nihilists”?
I think “Nihilist” is a better term according to this description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihilism
Pleased to be that hated minority.
Paul
If I had a dollar for every time someone called me a deluded, stupid, irrational Christian I’d be a very rich lady!
I’m not surprised. I may be a Humanist but I try to show respect for the religious beliefs of others. Too many atheists seem to have a ‘hahaha, look at you and your stupid invisible friend, can’t you see how dumb you and your beliefs are’ attitude. No wonder they show us the same mistrust and rejection.
Perfectly happy to be in that minority also. It is incredibly sad – and worrying – that so many will continue to waste their lives crippled by the burden of religious beliefs and ignorant to the beauties scientific knowledge opens us to.
Thank God for atheism!
What’s with the V’s and the U’s in uppercase?
well, it’s the US, what do you expect..
do the same research in scandinavia, and the result will look quite the opposite.
Yup, America frightens me. Very much. But do enough people here know anything of what’s going on over there? Do enough people over there know enough of what’s going on? Why are men in particular so paranoid and empire building? Sorry to be contentious, guys, but you are. I just cannot imagine there would be this power/control/bullying thing happening if a bunch of women were in charge. And I mean women, not Hilary Clinton or Margaret Thatcher. And let’s not get into shoes and handbags and gossip; I am being quite serious – we need some nurturing now, this planet has taken enough. We know how to start fixing things, but will we? Not till the energy runs out anyway. Then we’ll need to start building some communities again – ‘cos we’ll suddenly need each other’s help to build the mud huts.
It obvious why, isn’t it? Many theists believe that their morality comes from their god, so to be an atheist and not to have a god means you have no morality.
Does that mean that if you can convince your god not to look at you for a minute or two, you could get away with that rape or murder that you always wanted to do but haven’t done yet because god was looking and he really disapproves of that sort of thing?
I love being an atheist. It means I don’t rape or murder people just because I’m a nice person, and not just because god might catch me.
I’m sure I read in Tricks of the Mind, by Derren Brown (end of plug), he was once a “Happy, clappy Christian”, so what is he now? A moody, apathetic atheist?
Theres some sort of hidden mesage here :S Tweet me: JRabone
With such hatred toward atheists it makes you wonder how many people really believe and how many are pressured into just going through the motions. I have a suspicion that if we could see into people’s hearts we would find very few true believers and that atheists are not a minority after all.
Awesomesauce!
THey’ll get there. It’ll just take them a little longer.
I actually understand it. Because the only time you notice atheists is when they have something to say about (your) religion. Saying everything you believe in is false. And usually not too subtle either.
But it’s really USA’s state of mind. Here in Holland nobody can give a crap what you believe or if you even believe. (Same goes for sexual prefs)
Ah well. America is the ‘special class’ of the world
is that article supposed to have bigger text/font than the rest of those on the blog?
Nice to be an athiest though isn’t it
PS It’s not Atheists or Christians who use an iPhone. It’s sheep.
I think this is a better description of Nihilism: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Nihilism
How can they hate us for not believing in something there is no proof of. It’s like hating Derren brown because his trick didn’t work on me, but, worked on many people. Stupid Americans.
VUUV?
Has anybody been able to decypher the hidden capitol letters message?
I’m Still working on it!!
I find it hard to understand (and a little scary) how the supposedly peaceful tolerant religious can hate and mistrust people that don’t believe in something. Surely different religions believe in different things, so what’s the difference in choosing not to believe. They are all atheists with regard to the religions that they don’t believe in. Some of us just don’t need myths and imaginary friends to get through the day. A good life is inspired by love and guided by knowledge, fear plays no part.
Hmm, anyone got any clue what the picture of the telly (or VUUV) might elude to? Time to exercise some google-fu…
Alright, so what is VUUV? Could there possibly be some remote viewing link?
Austin Cline needs to learn how to capitalise properly!
Wow, vuuv looks FUN! Ha ha, I bet those buys are pretty susceptible to influence while they’re enjoying free love and trance
This reminds me of when I was eleven years old and I went on a friends’ birthday outing to watch ‘Beethoven’ at the cinema. During the many hilarious scenes of dog-related chaos my friend’s Mum would look round at us all laughing. Except I was the only one not laughing.
Ah, but before someone lobs a flaming bible at my head, I do not mean to suggest that Atheists are humourless boors who despise popular enjoyment…
“The next time a religious/deluded person uses their iPhone, visits a doctor, or flies in a plane they would do well to remember that chances are atheist has made that possible.”
Well put. Or, as someone else said, science flies us to the moon; religion flies us into buildings.
I believe Scientologists did come bottom in a more recent survey of religious minorities, second only to atheists.
PeterS – I think Nihilists also don’t believe in things like society or morality or meaning. Most atheists believe there is meaning in life, but it is the meaning that we put there ourselves.
My mother would rather I be Muslim, gay or anything but atheist. She wanted to see my marriage certificate after I told her I was atheist. She didn’t believe that it was valid if I did not believe in God.
Most Buddhists are atheists, does that mean Buddhists are hated too?
I’m with Sam Not Spam. The post above, by Ataru, is an almost perfect example of the kind of reasoning that makes people dislike atheists.
“The most intelligent, logical, and most level headed people are the most hated? The next time a religious/deluded person uses their iPhone, visits a doctor, or flies in a plane they would do well to remember that chances are atheist has made that possible.”
Statistically speaking, it’s far more likely that a Theist has made it possible. Seriously though- who actually thinks this way and genuinely believes that they occupy some kind of intellectually superior ground? Atheists are not the problem- nor are Theists. It’s idiots that are the problem- and they come in all shapes and sizes, with all sorts of different beliefs.
Ehehe …. I wonder which people they included in this study .. where they found them and how the research has been conducted … It seems all like complete crap to me. I mean .. Jews? How come that one was so close up with agreeing with the vision of the people that participated in the studý. Are there that many Jews in all america .. or is that in minnesota the case. I did not have the idea that america was so pro jew so far.
Not that there is something wrong with jews, just noticed some weird stuff in the results ….. but hey .. coming from america .. what else to expect … I wonder whether the majority of americans reads this type of publications and research more or less in the same way, that they wonder who it is about as it is not about them. I just wonder ..
And usefull?
Ataru is right the most level headed and down to earht bunch are most hated. How stupid but that’s just society proving itself a society once again lol..
VUUV
The studies do always yield those results but as a regular person not running for office I have never felt any descrimination for being an atheist. I think the atheist experience differs a lot by the part of the country an American lives in. Here in the semi-urban, fairly diverse Northeast, not a problem. But I’m sure life would be different in the “bible belt”.
wow, I’m glad New Zealand is so much more accepting than this.
Remind me to tell as many people in America as I can that God is a Lie
Well, the world favours the gullible! Intelligent people are obviously a threat because there is every chance that they could expose the “stories” perpetuated by believers as false! Imagine that!!!
What’s with the U’s and V’s?!
Thought you might like “Gay Scientists Isolate Christian Gene” on YouTube – http://tr.im/gaysci
So… there IS this, but I don’t know what the relevance is. Seems to be some hippy happy festival. Doesn’t sound like Derren’s thing.
http://www.vuuv-festival.eu/
hmm goping back to Frtiday nights Event….VUUV – VU (view) UltraViolet (UV)….
no….?….
hmmm
scuse me, dyslexic fingers at work again….*going back to Friday nights Events* ahem.
YoU’Ve got to be kidding me! Anyone who watched Friday’s show should get the UV thing.
is there some hidden writing on the screen of the tv? i dont have a purple light, i cant seeee
:s
Another ARG to win a TV this time? Phillis said it would be less obvious…
There’s a VUUV festival – and like rivmixx there’s lists of artists, recommended websites and stuff – I’m guessing something’s lurking on there?
On the VUUV site it mentions a DJ called ‘Beardyman’ – who is also on rivmixx ( I clicked on it while looking for the iPod ARG – thinking it was a reference to Derren). Might be coincidence though…
“Thousands of people, one message: happiness. Experiencing the magic of being in the moment, supported by the music creating a flow: everyone together. That’s the VuuV vibe!”
Interesting discussion on this topic at: http://www.boltonian.edublogs.org
It’s the smugness of certainty that grates with me, whether atheist, Christian or any other belief system. My wife is Therevada Buddhist (about the most civilised religion I have yet come across) and I am agnostic. We know so little of the world that I believe that this is the only honest position to hold. But I guess we are all tribal to some extent and the atheist/theist battleground is merely one manifestation of our need to be proved superior to the other lot.
VU/UV…. something to do with the ‘pick me’ card and T shirts on Friday night’s show? I so wish I had time whilst at work to ponder such things… anyone have time to ponder on my behalf?
Trying to work out what VUUV means. It kind of looks like the bottom of a rocket taking off.
Typical atheists, always complaining. You just can’t trust em.
;P
VUUV festival is for trance music in particular
Get it? Trance, Hypnotism….
VUUV is a goan festival – i think Derren wants us to partay.
I have to say it’s kind of sad seeing so many people slander people with a belief? I mean, does that make you a good person? I heard someone state that Athiests are the most intelligent and logical? – Quite frankly i’ve met a johovah who was more logical than you can imagine. Myself, I am athiest, but don’t judge a whole belief system.. There’s values in there, that’s what means more to the person than a big spiritual person called god (?) I wouldn’t tell christians that there god doesn’t exist, and neither do I think that no-one in here is 100% sure he doesn’t exist, until I know fully, myself, I won’t say he doesn’t but i’ll keep my ideas bringing on my reality. For a ‘logical’ bunch, you really don’t look very deep into the situation. There’s so much you fools don’t understand about….
your own reality you live in, so be clear and sure before you make any judgement or statement.
saddasdasdasd
Throughout history, people with a brain and the will to use it have been persecuted by the ignorant. Just look at the nazi’s and there book burning escapades. Maybe we should all go back to the dark ages of hysteria and persecution. I’m so proud to be an Athiest!
another great example of a crappily designed study. are those ALL the categories, or is this a subjective list of who the researchers think we hate the most? i’m sure satanists are more hated than atheists here…but i dont see them in those results.
There are some who believe in an universal God, but not the writings of man; nevertheless, shouldn’t religion, or lack of, be a private matter?
I can believe that.
And roz (above), read the research: http://www.soc.umn.edu/~hartmann/files/atheist%20as%20the%20other.pdf
its because atheists are non conformist. people who follow a religion follow what they are told with no proof or follow through. society has negative connotations of nyone who does not conform to the mojority and cannot be governed by the powers that be
For an example of tribalism (and bad grammar) look no further than Andy (or andy) at 1.56. Proud, forsooth! Of what, pray? Your vast intelligence, brilliant judgement, moral superiority, open-mindedness or lack of humility?
Socrates famously knew nothing but he knew more than his accusers – he knew that he knew nothing.
‘For where is the man that has incontestable evidence of the truth of all that he holds, or of the falsehood of all that he condemns, or can say that he has examined to the bottom his own, or other men’s opinions? The necessity of believing without knowledge, nay often upon very slight grounds, in this fleeting state of action and blindness we are in, should make us more busy and careful to inform ourselves than to constrain others.’ John Locke.
‘There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.’ Shakespeare (Hamlet).
This is why I choose to be agnostic. If you do believe in God, the atheists call you stupid, and if you don’t believe in God, the Christians call you a sinner! Lose/Lose situation.
Having said that, there is a lot of stereotyping going on. Not all Christians are Bible bashing nutcases, and not all atheists go around chanting “There is no God! Kill the Christians!” What I really can’t stand is when an atheist hears that someone is a Christian, or vice versa, and then they’ll go up and start giving them a hard time because they assume they’re the stereotypical Christian or atheist. Yes, there are some problem-people out there, but not all religious people are dumb, and not all atheists are downers!
Who cares what other people believe? Why can’t we all just get along?
@ IanVisits – ‘I thought Scientologists were the most hated people in America.’ Nah, they’re just the most hateful.
Woooo! I’m hated lol
so glad I don’t live in America right now
this is exactly what i would expect from america, i would think it would be very different in england, this is the only reason why we dont advertise the fact tha england is a very non rligious country to america, because they would distrust us and think we were comunists
For those of us who are Atheists living in America this is hardly news but I’m glad to get the sympathy and support of the rest of the reality based world.
Evangelically yours,
Super Jesus
PS: Send chocolate!
VUUV – Is it that old double-meaning stuff again – ‘acting as one’, being focused together at the rave, with a single spirit; a single goal..? What if crowd hysteria causes problems; too much information means mistakes, clouded issues, people seeing things that aren’t there..? Or is VUUV UV reflected? Don’t they coat windows with anti-spy stuff to prevent info ‘leaking’ invisibly? Same with fibre optic lines? Who knows, but I will deffo enjoy this ep of the Events.
Agh.. Now I know what the V’s & U’s are for… :/
Paul B xx
@ Jess xxx ‘Who cares what other people believe? Why can’t we all just get along?’ Wouldn’t that be just amazing..? Just to be people and help people and share what we have. Bliss.
Religion and race and all that crap did not come into my life till I was in my 20s and moved to London. Oh to go back to those naive times. Things are so different now, even for the younger generation. Shame we have to bring it into everything. What a waste of good energy, eh? Doing good and being good is so different from following any organised religion, can’t you see..?
@PaulB – do tell!!!
@JayKay
Oh you champion of mother nature you
Good to know some of you are still about after so long and so much persecution too… da b*stards!
But I guess as the age old saying goes:
Condemnant quod non intellegunt
(They condemn because they do not understand)
Nice to see the world still turns though
All the guys coming here need to learn to chill-out a little. Titles like this are evidentally to bring about more arguing and disagreements between the different factions.
Atheist’s shouldn’t really be hated. They, like most following any mainstream religion, have their own set of beliefs, mainly which have been placed upon them.
We’re not that different after all eh?
Peace People!
WOO America officially hates me!!! Result!!!
Personally I’d have thought it more sensible to mistrust criminals and politicians the most…. apparently not though! Oh well
IT would of course be too much effort just to say “hey we disagree, who cares?? lets go have a drink”
noo of course we have to argue tediously about who is right!
I love the irony that this reminds me of a challenge in trick or treat about superstition- where we are all trying to find an answer or explanation to somthing that is in fact random and completely out of our control!
Having stayed in America for a spell, and travelled there for many years I can honestly believe this outcome. Most Americans I have met and had conversations with are religious in one form or another and have little respect for those who aren’t. It doesn’t come into the average U.S consciousness that people can live a happy life without God, or believe science over God. “Higgs boson” lol, great example.
Religion is almost a benchmark, which people can be judged from. However not being able to be “labelled” doesn’t mean that atheists are bad people. I for example have used my brain to discover and learn about life, and question everything, and this process has provided me with my own beliefs.
@Mr Woolf – Who condemned me?! I musta missed that one. I’ll get the bastards, heehee! We’re all condemned – they just don’t know it yet, haha!
I’ve been wondering where all you regulars have gone?! I guess you will come out to play again when it dies down a wee bit Haven’t heard much brutality from the lovely Phillis lately either. But I guess some of these new posts will steam up the room a wee bit, heehee!
Hey, where is the gallery that was put up late last night? Can’t find it. I wanted a wee mooch at the photies again before I head out to the theatre. Have you got the heading it was under?
I like the one where Derren has nodded off and looks like shit. It seems such an honest photo – like the exhausted face of my lovely friend after giving birth – it doesn’t look like the person I know, because there is no mask. Ahhhh.
Msg from Abeo: Its in the menu options above. Or click here.

Agreed. Each person’s motivation is different, whichever club they belong to. For some it is social cohesion, for others companionship, moral direction, or simply habit, and for most people a mix of all these. Christians of my acquaiintance are very little exercised by the metaphysics of their religion, which is what most prosyletising atheists attack.
Most people do just get along, I find, either by not discussing religion at all or by accepting difference – at least that is true, more or less, in this country.
@ JayKay It would be amazing. Everyone’s always desperate to prove everyone else wrong, and themselves right. What if we just didn’t care? What if we just let everyone live their lives how they want to?
(I’m probably going to get a load of replies saying, “What, should we let Satanists live their lives how they want to? Being evil?” Yeah, because that’s SO what I mean! Big up the Satanists!)
In reality, though, I believe that transsexual and crips are the most hated and discriminated against minorities.
If other peoples views don’t infringe on me then let them believe in what ever makes them happy. If others feel the need to judge me for my beliefs then how sad for them, I personally think I live a good life and thats what matters most.
So is Derren broadcasting live from that hidden festival this friday then?! Surely that would beat ‘predicting’ the lottery ANY day!
I’m proud to be an optimistic agnostic. I very much like the idea that there might be something else, it gives me comfort. However, I dont believe that it is possible to know. Strange things happen all the time and I’m smart enough to understand that I’m not smart enough to understand everything. I’m happy to sit on the fence regardless of the splinters, I wont pick a side based on fear or pressures, I cant pick a side because I dont know all the facts and I dont want to pick a side because I quite like the view from up here on my fence.
@JayKay
Lol, no-one’s condemned you… glad to hear it
Looks like something’s been started now, haha.
For the love of… well what it’s love of doesn’t really matter, as long as it’s love, right?

Come on… you love it really
Peace People!
thanx for the link. so i did read the research, & here’s the most important part:
“Wording was as follows: ‘Now I want to read you
a list of different groups of people who live in this
country.’ ”
which just proves my point–THEY are choosing the categories, so they can tweak the data any way they want to. clearly the study proves atheists are most hated because that’s what it set out to prove. i think the result would be far different if they included, say, “satanists”–who are far more hated.
i’d also like to see a sample of that survey, since i used to work for gallup & i know what those surveys are like…
I think the ‘UVs’ refer to uv light as in last Friday’s event. I also wonder whether based on what Phillis has been saying on Facebook there’s something written on the special edition Enigma posters which a uv light will reveal.
Unfortunately I don’t have a poster. Anyone with one willing to try it out for me and report back?! I understand uv torches are fairly easy to get hold of!
Typical….everyone who has a different take on life that is outside the norm is distrusted…….i have therefore taken up the belief of Jedi…..beware my Jedi powers….i will use the force on you all ha ha ha ha ha ha.
OK so I am terrible about all this secret code word stuff. Just someone please tell me what it was all about when it was all over.
maybe vuuv = vwv?
apparently it stands for Vietnam Women Veterans.
I’m glad that’s cleared that up then…
VUUV… There is a secret code written in UV on the ‘Limited Edition Enigma Poster’.
See it here – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9MJGp05HgE
The code seems to be in Braille… Seems to spell SOLO, SOLOI or SOLOA.
Simples!…
What you think???
there isn’t enough self-esteem in the United States to support atheism
so go on, get to conning folks into believing in themselves
let alone one another
also, people here don’t talk about this shit
there was hardly even a mumble when the long time local terrestrial rap/r&b FM station went christian talk
and i wonder, how do things like complacency, apathy, and inaction boost people’s belief in a god?
Athiest dismiss a valid hypothesis like religion without empirical evidence to disprove it and are therefore scientifically illiterate.
They are no different than Religious people and are pseudo-intellects who believe deep down they’re enlightened.
Quite sad.
Ah, just another bunch of sillyness, anyone who feels the need to hate me because I am an atheist is welcome to do so!!
Abeo, thanks for the link to the photos. Soz I couldn’t get back earlier. And can you check on poster deliveries at your end? I know it’s late, so no worries just now or anything. I’m just wondering if the postal strike is kicking in as things are a bit off and on at the mo re deliveries.
This just goes to prove that the United States is the exception to every rule of sociology that you can possibly think of.
Having said that, do bear in mind that in a certain part of the American psyche, the word that follows “godless” is “communist”. Perhaps all this study proves is that old habits die hard.
Roz, the groups listed were a wide variety of demographics including major religions, atheists, and a few other classically hated groups. How is it that you think this counts as a rigged test? When someone looks at this and concludes “atheists are more hated than mulsims” and “atheists are more hated than scientologists” (that data has shifted since this survey was taken – it was true back then but not today), exactly what makes you think this is a bad conclusion to draw from the survey?
And Richie, the dismissal of a hypothesis does not require co0ntrary evidnece – it only requires showing that the evidence the hypothesizer claimed is absent. If the hypothesizer claimed no evidence, then there isn’t anything TO dismiss in the first place. *You* are being scientifically illiterate.
I think i’m going to have so much faith in the almighty from now on. Finally i can join the easter egg party now! I hate to be hated.
@ Everyone
Cold War 2!!!
Let’s make sure it isn’t!
Ok, so I know that when scientist performed analysis on two completely different subjects (Me and a squirrel’s dropping)…

They did in fact find that I contain, on average, 62% more nuttyness (I have used a similar one before, I know)… but this cause is a valid one and you can help make a change.

)
(I’m still not sick of typing that yet
@RobW: thanks for that. I wonder if it’s the same for everyone?
The spaces between the dots are a bit too large for Braille, ie it looks more like “;AK,L K, A” than “SOL O A”, but maybe it just didn’t print right? No idea what either of those combinations could stand for though. You’d expect to see the ‘numbers’ symbol if any of the letters should be replaced by numbers.
I’m sure I remember doing codes like that when I was about 9 at school. I have this memory of the triangle formation with dots. Hmmm. The things you forget. The things you can dog up from thirty odd years ago!
The things you can DOG up? Jeez, I can make some typos! DIG up. All sorts of things have popped into my mind!
@RobW, @Gewitternacht – maybe check your posters too, if you have them? Don’t know if all posters have the same markings or not…
Yep, it does look like Braille doesn’t it? But I think it might be SOLOS, as the dots that make up the last S are hard to read on the white. And though it looks like extra spaces between the letters, it’s just regular spacing. Solos is also a palindrome. But what does it mean? Hmmm. And does everyone have the same? And the more I look at it, I’m getting eyes, a nose and ears (I had them already actually), but somehow the word looks like a face or I have that thing that means you see faces in clouds etc. I’ve tried to see if I can find letters made from the reverse of these dots, but I can’t. I’m going to look again and see if using the negative spaces also makes a word.
You don’t need UV light to see the markings on the poster though?? I’ve been trying to work out what they mean since I got it with no luck, defo not braile but I shall not give up!!
And have found that in fact, that is the same as reversing the letters round, duh. Soooooo, SOLOS..? Hopefully I’ll get my poster soon and will have a butchers.
@ Mods
Hey thanks for posting my previous comment up… dunno how many people have bothered with it though, lol.
@JayKay
Goin’ crazy again are we?
haha. Hope all things with you and your family are all ok
As I hope the same for all of the good, decent people here

Oh ffs…
This one?

Interesting interviews there!!! Very meaningful if you know what you’re looking at I guess.
My head is a dangerous place to be, lol.
I don’t feel that I put too much effort into drawing this conclusion though :/ … thanks to JayKay (hmm) and the other nice folk for pointing out the SOLOS… I thought I’d heard it before… but yeah, not in that context.
I’m not gay but I have nothing what-so-ever against gay folk…
Love is love whatever form it takes, at least it’s love.
Sickens me actually that some religions can forgive rapists, murderers and other depraved individuals… but not someone who has genuine love for another of the same sex.

Ataru, you forgot to mention “the most egotistical….”
Atheists are hypocrites. I’ve discussed matters of the spirit with them and they constantly have to catch themselves and say, ‘I don’t really believe in that, but that’s what I heard…”
Reproducible scientific experiments carried out by Harold Koenig of Duke University show that people who have a religion, any religion, are healthier, are more disease resistant, and live longer than those who don’t. I don’t hate atheists. I feel sorry for them. Sorry Angelina. Sorry Brad.
@ HealingMindN Religious people are healthier than atheists? How does that work?
@ Mr Woolf – where did you read that. I have rusty Latin, but does that roughly mean, Whomever the God’s will take, they will become mad?
Bugger! Lol.
@JayKay :- “Whom the gods would destroy, they first make insane”
Although saying that, I’ve been like this a long while now, so what’ve they been doing? Err… please don’t say hunting me… lol.
After finding the ‘Phyllis Falsus’ thing, I went hunting for some latin because:-

Why do I feel a bit like Mika’s new album recently?

And appologies…
it’d appear that I got it wrong anyway… Populi/Populo would be for people wouldn’t it?
Sorry
Peace people!
(At least I can get that one right eh?)
@Mr Woolf – Nice try with the Latin! I can only very very roughly translate now. I have no idea of any of the tenses really, apart from the first thing you learn which is amabo, amabas, amabat, amabamus, amabatus, amabant. It’s stood me in good stead though and I’m very grateful to my old school for being old fashioned and teaching it. It’s even hard to google Latin now – all you get is Spanish and Italian!
@JayKay
Well it’s always been a language I’ve admired, but they killed it off.
I think it’s possibly the language (or one of very few) where wisdom can be found (if you know what I mean?)
Maybe one day I’ll get the oppertunity to master that ‘dead tongue’… who knows.
Hope all things with you are well
Peace people.
It’s only a matter of time until the religious right’s old guard dies off. We just keep pushing the truth and let them spew their dogma until they choke. I used to be tolerent of the pious, but now that they are pushing their religion into the US government, I am much more vocal and less concerned about the potential bigotry aimed my way.
Stand up Freethinkers!!!!
@Mr Woolf – I think you’ll find more wisdom in the Greek language, plus it’s fun to decode the symbols as well as the meaning of the words. I translated a version of a Greek play a few years ago and, as well as the English versions I read, I googled copies of Greek versions and Euripides’s ancient version. What beautiful, metaphorical, three-dimensional writing (and I don’t know what has happened in the English translations, but there is plenty of dark humour and sarcasm in the tragedies which seems to have been missed). And what a grasp of the human condition. How could they possibly know what they knew about how the brain and body works and how it affects our psychology? And they were very tolerant of other races and cultures. So, have a look at some Homer maybe.
@JayKay VUUV is also a palindrome (as well as SOLOS) although not actually a word so perhaps not technically a palindrome. Not sure. Interesting…
Or for maths, try Plato and Socrates. I’m not up on them at all, but one day I’ll find the time. If Derren teaches me to speed read, haha!
@ Katherine368 – but maybe it counts as it exists as an acronym for a festival where they take mind altering drugs? Maybe on p200,000 of Google, it means something spy-ish, haha!
seems that people can pass judgement without knowing any facts luckly i dont usually react to rudeness it comes from ignorance
