Whether it’s highlighted in major news headlines about Argentinean affairs and Ponzi schemes, or in personal battles with obesity and drug addiction, individuals regularly succumb to greed, lust and self-destructive behaviors. New research from the Kellogg School of Management examines why this is the case, and demonstrates that individuals believe they have more restraint than they actually possess—ultimately leading to poor decision-making.
People in a cold, non-impulsive state will overestimate their ability to control impulses
People in a hot, impulsive state will have a more realistic view of their capacity for impulse control
People who perceive they have a high capacity for impulse control will expose themselves to more temptation and will ultimately exhibit more impulsive behavior.

I dont really have anything to say but I felt compelled to click the link from the twitter feed and then.. a strange compulsion came over me to comment.
Hmmm, this is interesting.
A friend of mine is quitting cigarettes and has pledged (of his own free will) that he’ll give me £10 for each time he falls off the wagon. I thought I was being fair minded when I sent him some URL links to TV anti-smoking ads and the movie “Thankyou for Smoking” to help him motivate himself.
According to this research I’ve just planted the idea of smoking in his head and can look forward to making my first £200 sometime this week.
Ker-ching.
yeah especially if its a derren link like the one on msn this morning where you can watch a free episode of mind control.
Oh I KNOW I have no restraint.
“give yourself over to absolute pleasure…dont dream it, be it.”
‘I can resist everything except temptation’ – Oscar Wilde.
I can’t believe no-one’s quoted Mr Wilde yet: “I can resist everything except temptation”.
Hopefully, admitting to myself that I’m a sucker for temptation will help me avoid it, when I want to.
Trouble is, I rarely want to…
I like to think I am quite restrained with some things, but I’m a hopelessly impulsive internet shopper. It’s almost like Ebay or Amazon are luring me to spend my money with them!
I guess we all have our vices & bad habits, and that’s where the restraint and temptation comes in. Or, as we all know, if someone tells you NOT to do something, we have the urge to want to do it. Whether it’s right or wrong.

I have so far not clicked the link. Negative suggestion is not that powerful for me. It may be different if I were craving something, say, chocolate. Infact there are some bars beside me that I didn’t eat from last night right now. But even still it’s just a case of remembering stuff such as ‘You aren’t going to DIE if you don’t eat these – Chill.’ which stops the idea of needing to do something.
Craving is more or less about ‘I NEED this.’ And it’s just about discovering that you don’t really…
And I definitely have no craving towards clicking this link
.
…oh dammit. I forgot that when you click the title of a post it always takes you to the comments anyway. I just remembered lol. I would have thought Phillis would have linked the title to something else :/
I DID NOT CLICK IT. I just got that it was a casual gesture and not a real ‘DO NOT CLICK’ thing lol. But I’m still playing along… just in case
I like to think I have great restraint, but I give in to even simple suggestions. Things like seeing a McLogo make me want a burger, but only while I can see it. As soon as it’s no longer in my line of view, the craving tails off.
Wouldn’t it be more tempting if it said “Do not click this link”?
Derren on Twitter: ‘Been eating well, lost a stone in a couple of weeks. Today stuffed myself with pizza and chocolate. Feel sick now. Miserable. Going home.’
Looks like he might be human after all. Did the naughty Devil tempt you..?
Hm .. hot impulskive and cold non impulsive … they exclude a lot … my impulsiveness can be both, hot and cold .. or neither .. as well as my non impulsiveness .. it depends on who is in the back (or on top) in myself .. and who is on the run … getting out .. it’s different personalities more or less ..
I tend to control my non impulsive self so that I can be more impulsive .. and vice versa. But I’m also not the youngest anymore and therefor have a steady focus in life .. know what I want and what I dont want ..
I only see temptation a times when I want something .. but can’t afford it .. at times I will buy it .. if I’m too up.. that’s where I dont read my normal self anymore … my normal visions .. I remember them .. but that’s about it in those times
RE Derren’s Tweet- ‘lost a stone’ ???
Didn’t think he needed to. He’ll be like a twig. Quick, someone get round to his with a jumbo box of Krispy Cremes before the poor man wastes away

Ohh,i`ve just got to have one of those……….
Whoa there – Derren’s Tweet said he’d lost a stone then he pigged out on pizza? Is this another clue to stucktothesofa.com- the site which features pizza delivery, or has Derren fallen foul of one of his own subliminal suggestions?
I’m useless at riddles… can someone tell me if there’s more to this than meets the eye or is it just another random tweet?
@ Flapjack – I’m starting to wonder this too…. infact, I’m wondering about our health and how obsessed we have all become because of the crypticness! Haha! This is the sort of stuff that keeps people up at night!
Not that I’m complaining… I love all of the mystery
I’ve been fighting the temptation to buy a lottery ticket… and just gave in.
Hmmmm temptation vs curiosity….i’m curious what lies behind the lnk but i’m not tempted to click it…so what’s that all about…….as for temptation…well i see chocolate….it tempts me…i spend 10mins arguing with said chocolate bar…..you want me…..no i dont….you need me….i dont need the calories…..you only live once….oh what the heck…..and then i eat….well obviously i pay first then eat…don’t want you all thinking i be a petty thief now ha ha.
