Phillis has just received news from a previous acquaintance of Derren’s about the bearded trickster’s crafty exploits and how they lead to him being banned in casinos across the country.
In 2000, a young lady was working as a valet girl in a prominent London casino. Having worked in other venues, she was always happy to see a devilishly handsome young man with a rather familiar face. Nikki was unaware of the individual’s true identity – he was known to her only as someone frequenting her other places of work, both in and outside London. This young man was our very own Derren Brown, still early on in his career and not the international super-celebrity we all know him as today.
Nikki described him as “very personable. Always polite and well dressed and he took time out to talk to me and ask me questions about how the casino operated.”
Derren slowly became a regular. His demeanor was described by many as “quiet but very confident. Your average casino card player has at most a good grasp of the game. Derren knew exactly what was going on, he was extremely focused and calculated.”
This was not an unusual situation until Nikki began to realize that “Derren rarely ever placed a bet. At most he would play the fruit machines and seemed to have worked out how to crack them, but he would sit for ages at the card tables and just watch. Eventually he would opt in and place a small bet, he won every time without fail.”
It seemed to impress the other players at the tables and slowly became a novelty. Some thought Derren was there as entertainment, others were more intrigued: “he was very popular, everyone wanted to talk to him and find out who he was, what he did or how he managed to pull off a 100% result.”
Derren slowly increased the frequency and amounts he would bet. “It was never a large amount, but as it became more apparent he would never fail there was a point at which the pit bosses would become agitated”.
Soon he was beginning to be recognised. “The second he walked in there would be a fluster. The pit bosses would call to alert each other that he was in the building. I was instructed to stay close to him and get him whatever he asked for – to be extra nice to him”.
Meetings were held about what to do and soon it was decided that they didn’t want to risk making a scene. Very cleverly, Derren had managed to make quite an impression on people – if he began betting large amounts it could reflect badly on the casino if they decided to eject him in front of a cheering crowd.
So, quietly but surely, Derren began having trouble getting into certain venues – even with a subtle disguise he would be discovered and frogmarched out of the door. He would travel further afield but the network closed up and soon Derren realised fewer and fewer places were open to him. Eventually he scored a show with a popular TV network in the UK and put his casino days behind him for good.

The plot thickens…:D
Lovely little warm up reading for tonight’s proceedings — love it.
I would’ve much preferred to hear about disorientated pit bosses and croupiers running out to steal televisions – but a great story nonetheless.
Luck be a lady tonight.
wow, thats so cool
Derren is awesome
I’m not sure getting banned from a casino for card counting is legal in the UK. Even in the US, someone sued the casino and won..!
wonder if he’s banned in America
very interesting
Bless. He could always play Texas Hold ‘Em Poker on Facebook if he is desperate for a game… or call around my house and play for fun.
Aww poor Derren! he is a crafty little gorgeous human being though
but i suppose if they didnt want to lose money then they did the right thing, casinos arent there to just give money out to every tom dick and harry! x
Hm …. yes .. the picture becomes clear. Actually, now that I see it .. the person left out a few details. ..
As an ex-croupier I found this very interesting. As a rule, if a punter is barred for winning too much money (and this does happen) they are rarely escorted from the building. Rather they find out on their next visit.
I can imagine it would have been fun to deal blackjack to Derren, there’s nothing nicer than when the good guys win.
I wouldn’t have thought that you could be refused entry for being a consistent winner alone. Consistently winning large amounts yes, such as in the first series of ‘Tricks of the Mind’. Whatever the winning techniques are, I do enjoy the misdirection involved in the production!
Fantastic, just loved reading this. What can I say? Derren you’re my absolute hero!!
LC x
Such a sly fox
Poor Derren… he’s too brilliant for his own good, so it seems.
Unsuspecting European casino’s beware! Really looking forward to tonight’s Event but so sad it’s the last one.
Do you think he could beat Criss Angel at poker?
A casino can bar any member at any time without giving any reason, just for the record

>Do you think he could beat Criss Angel at poker?
That comment should’ve ended at the word ‘Angel’ – posed as a request….
Ahhh, but what’s Derren like on those 2p arcade slot machines with the sliding drawers? It’s all in how much you can shove them without setting off the motion siren or alerting the management
That’s the limits of my gambling expertise!
@PhilStephens: I was trying to be topical!
so tonight is a walk in the park then!! still very excited
@Flapjack – those ‘games’ drive me mad!!
What I’d give to have Derren in disguise and go to the races with me. I know my horses, Derren could do the ‘finances’…. yep, just the once would be enough! lol (but alas, I know Derren doesn’t do that sort of thing anymore…… ;()
Anyway, am sooooo looking forward to 9pm tonight.
LC x
Atleast Derren probably wont have a gambling addiction in the near future lol… Or atleast it will now be very hard for him to become addicted. Really looking forward to tonights show… As always Derren never ceases to amaze.
What a smooth operator! But imagine being rejected frm every casino, then years later the casino owners seeing you being an international super-celebrity! mega slap on the face or what! lol. Cant wait to see tonight, I know I’ll have my fingers crossed!
Ooooooohhh, that’s interesting. Can’t wait to watch tonight’s show. =D
That’s a pretty nice story.
Going to enjoy tonight, especially if he gives away some valuble secrets
I think ‘The events’ aren’t going on for long enough, and they aren’t as new and interesting as they should be. But ofcourse there is alot of nice things involved in each episode, I don’t think he got to the point alot of the time.. Meh.
He’s clever and well executed, a great peformer.
Bit of a non story, in general people who can repeatedly go to a casino without ending up emptying out their pockets into their hands tends to get barred. Simple economics really. Surprised it’s only happened recently, though
@ flapjack – I’m appauling at shoving those machines. ALWAYS set the alarm off. I just don’t know my own strength! Here we are, grasping at coppers and Derrens pulling out the stops in casinos. GRRR!
me too
A very interesting read. Sounds like tonight will be easy for you Derren
Good luck – not that you need it! I can’t wait to see tonight’s show, but I can’t believe it’s the last one
xxx
Unless Derren is cheating, he is not breaking rules. Therefore it is not right to kick him out of a casino because he is following rules.
e.g. Remembering all the dealt cards in a Blackjack game so you can do a safe ‘hit me’ move to win is NOT a cheat. I consider that a strategy because it does not break the rules of the game.
Yeah, gonna laugh at this casino when it gets owned tonight
LadyClaire/ Muse Fiona – the best way to win at the 2p slotties I’ve discovered is to treat it as a game where you start with one poundsworth of copper coinage and your OBJECTIVE is to loose all those coins in the minimum amount of time. Whenever you win a mini-landslide of copper currency it’s your duty to plough them back into the machine again in the shortest time possible.
If you can convince yourself that was your objective in the first place it takes the edge of the inevitable spirit-crushing defeat as your last 2p plinky-plonks down the perspex laminated grid of nails into coppery oblivion.
OK, now I feel really sad and pathetic. I should probably get out more
Ooooooooh! It’s coming on!
Arghhhh…. can’t believe this is the last one
What am I going to do on a Friday now :’(
x x
I bet he could empty a teddy claw machine in an instant! Next years series ‘Derren Does Great Yarmouth’!
Unlucky Derren. =/
Argh, one number out, unlucky fella.
Hey Derren and crew!
Just watched show. Bad luck… although you did say there was a twist
Still very impressed by the closeness of the calculation though, well done D.
I hope you don’t get too many ‘haters’ from this, because it’s really not deserved.
Pax, amor et concordia!
x
Wow, one out
No Shame in being one out on the roulette wheel Derren. It was a very interesting experiment and as such was undertaken to determine whether it was possible or not. Although one digit out wasnt the winning result int was incredbible close and proves that calculating the trajectories in the wheel by a human is a very demanding an precise feat.
Well done!
Rgds,
Kev
Don’t even worry about it Derren! You are incredible and fantastic and one off is not bad at all!!!
We all still love you, and I’d like to see any one who says you had failed try what you do!
Much love to Derren and the whole team!
Aww, so near yet so far, Derren. Such a shame. But you did say it wasn’t an exact science. Loved the show, the whole series, everything!
LC x
Oh no …. unlucky Mr.B.
I still love you though!!!
I can’t belive it. That was scary to watch, and only 1 number our. Suppose it brings the realism out that it isn’t all actors and rigged equipment.
Oh I feel so sorry for Derren.. one out damb… Very sad! But still love ya XX
1 number, awwww, keep going Derren ! You know, and we know you can do it.
Gem x
Omg gutted for you Derren, 1 out
Awwwwwwwwwwww! Try again!
wow… that sucks! missed it by one.. well at least we know it isn’t fixed!
Hey, scammer not so full of yourself now are you?
Just so you know I’m never watching your shows again scammer, that poor man thought he was gonna win 175k
Speak again ..never fraud.
You gave us a great show. Gutted for you but still amazed at how close you got.
The Events has been great and kept me entertained and scratching my head for the last month. Thanks and well done Derren and your hard working team!
Sooo close!! You were only one number out!! The guys face was priceless though!
xxx
Seriously Derren, even though you didnt get it spot on, you did better than any of us could have done!
Still think you’re a legend!!
so close, yet so far!! but if you had actually got it, people would suspect that it was all set up…so who knows!
Noooooo!! Cant believe you didnt get it……..Am I the only one thats thinking maybe actually I didnt get some \”bigger picture\” thing???? Or am I thinking about it too much??? AAAHHHHHHHHH
aw, can’t believe it was one number out, guess you can’t win them all, but great show, gonna miss the events now.
Im so sorry Derren. Your fans still love you. Most of your tricks go right, i guess it was about time you slightly slipped up. Dont take it to heart.
man. that’s harsh. i hope you won’t disappear after this.
i love derren brown!
Don’t worry Derren. You were only one number out.
Well done on the whole series, I loved every show!!
He must have failed on purpose so that we believe all his other tricks are real
You’re still outstandingly amazing.
My confidence in Derren must be pretty high as I’m now waiting for a ‘twist’ to show us all up! However if there is no twist i’m still pretty impressed, especially if he was using the technique he described. You were practically there Derren! Try not to be too disappointed Derren, it took muchos grandes cojones to attempt such a stunt and yr still a fantastic entertainer!
Respek guy!
(Your victim must be considerably bewildered right now I’m guessing though! Go have a drink Derren, you definitely deserve it!)
I couldn’t believe it, so close and yet so far. After you put so much work into this i really feel for ya, but i know you’ll keep your chin up and come back next series and blow us all away again as you have during this series and in the past.
what just happened? The bearded one twas wrong? What will happen to the world now? Everything I believed in turned out to be a lie.
Your brilliant anyway and will forever be an object of amazement and lust to me and many others! Can’t wait for March at the Ipswich regent
oh, im sorry derren i hope your not to upset. i bet its hard to take though but we all still love you. keep on thinking of new exciting ideas and we will all keep watching.
Ouch, can’t believe that didn’t work. But oh well, Derren’s still a scary, scary, amazing man! A slip up was bound to happen at some point.
He’s still awesome!
It was an amazing show and it’s such a shame you were incredibly unlucky but still only 1 out! Still impressive! Still love Derren Brown!
aw im gutted for youu
and on the last episode as well, but if anything i think this has made people love you even more because now we know you dont fix things
still a ledgee xx
Oh no… but sooo close!! Not to worry, the whole series was fantastic.
Fabulous. Course we all know you were one off on purpose…
That took balls. Glad you gave him his money back, and I have to say well done. Even the computers aren’t exact, hence why they bet around the number. Nice play Derren, nice play.
Well done Derren! No1 else would have been able to do it! F**k the idiots, we still love u! The series was amazing
xxxx
Shocking! Still a great show tonight and very entertaining.
That was a really odd ending to the show. I mean sorry mate we’ll get your money back. Credits. End. I love Derren but wow. x
Very clever..! No electronic equipement, but two cameras got in – so obviously there was more than that – maybe even the whole thing was staged. So getting it one wrong still looks pretty impressive, without having to actually give that guy any money! Well played!
:O No way! Unlucky! Whether it was inadvertantly done, or set up I don\’t know…
At the end of the show wasn’t derren stood outside the truck next to one of the camera crew wearing a hat and standing with a giant £180000 cheque? Happened as the camera panned out at the end?
so sorry for you derren! still love you tho!
Ofcourse his acts are all real. I’ve seen him live and he’s honestly amazing, I was gobsmacked when he guessed my Maths teachers band.
Only one number out, not a fail to me! Amazing!
Derren your still amazing. Gutted that tonight didn’t quite work out but still very impressive with just one out. I look forward to the new shows and tour!
Derren mate
one out! people are probs gonna mouth off calling you crap and stuff, IGNORE THE IDIOTS! YOU’RE BETTER THAN SLICED BREAD! I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE ONE OUT OR 20! You’re still AMAZING and i wish you all the best for the future, i nearly cried when you got it wrong i felt so bad for you!
duh – very obvious fake casino (the audio was the giveaway) therefore C4′s not going to cough £175k winnings, therefore he misses it which in balance is a better long-term story than “magician performs trick”.
sepp – very synical
Derren you are such a talented and brilliant man, bad luck tonight. You’ve done so well and worked so hard over the last month (and year!) It definitely showed. We still all love you so much, if anything, I have even more respect for you. Will always love what you do, keep at it, and chin up. xxx
I think I get it….
The whole show was about taking a gamble, wasn’t it.
Not the gamble we thought, but the gamble on how people would react to Derren’s falibility.
(A lot like the Russian Roulette ending)
ha ha
Amazing, I was glued to my brainwash box, excuse me, television set
Derren,
ive watched all your shows on tv and love them all hopefully coming to see u in march next year. i am gutted for you that u didn’t win on the roulette wheel but to be one number out is still fantastic i cannot believe people are putting rude comments on here because u didn’t win…..
I think what u do is amazing and like u say your not a physic so what difference does it make that it didn’t work out tonight….
i will continue to watch any performance you do as i think they are fantastic….
looking forward to coming to watch Enigma
take care x
Amazing show, and a very talented guy – to even get close to the number and to memorise and calculate that in your own mind – absolutley astonishing! Well done – I am sure this will only spare you one further! Keep up the good work!
Lol chill out boys and girls. Derren’s an entertainer… He was out by one for effect. And it was very entertaining. Well done Derren
dont worry derren we still love you. like you said it was 37-1 chance in winning. shame bout the guys money tho xxxx
Is it just me who is still expecting Derren to pop up on the screen and say ‘actually, here’s the twist…’ ?!
dubious all the way. How come this was meant to be mainland Europe yet he asks for ten five hundred chips. Wouldn’t he be buying chips in Euros ??????????????? Fake.
even if he did get the roulette thing wrong, he still predicted the lottery!
Total respect for you Derren. I can’t believe you would do it the way you said you would so don’t know what went wrong! But man, keep up the good work and keep pushing those boundaries..
Really gutted for you, we still love you! such a shame, you have had us glued to our seats all series.
derren, i dont know what to believe… but i think you are equally as fantastic if it was a trick as if it were not.
<3
interseting – a shame he lost the roulette by one, but this made him extremely believable and his technique this time was by far the most believable – not saying the others wont!
Or
Well done – brilliant twist and you’ve done us all again. As usual I never know!
yknow derren im not one to frequent casinos very often, normally i go to play poker. But i have played roulette just once in my life. i played 30 on a 5 pound bet and won . i know this makes no difference to anything or i doubt you give a *”!+? but i just thought it would be nice to tell all that i now have a better percentage of win ratio than your quite wonderful self.. You are still utterly bewildering and fantastic keep on confusing the world my friend !!
Aw noooo =[ but at least, in a way, it proves it was a real, unrigged stunt (I'd like to believe) in that it went wrong....also maybe he did it to prove that as this one went wrong, that all the other tricks were real?
God knows. Mind boggling stuff =] I will forever be confused over what is real, what is rigged, and whether or not everything Derren does is true!! Thats why I love him so much =]
Is anyone else feeling a big anti-climax though?? I’m not really sure how to feel….its such a….. bizarre end to the series!! I do hope that people won’t hate on him too much for this though, for all his scaryness he still seems really sweet…and I will actually die if there is no more Derren Brown on t.v!!
Atleast I got stuck to my seat =] waaaaay xx
I hope I didn’t somehow psychically influence Derren’s choice; I told my mate on the way home from work that I though he might pick no. 8 lol! D’oh! Sorry!
I don’t get the casino thing??????? i’m confused!!!! Was he meant to get it wrong?
I still think you might have, er, something up your sleeve… Or the twist is you chose to lose for whatever reason. Have you bet on being one out?
The fact this was posted in Misdirection is telling I think.
ahhh darren
i feel so bad for you:’( i dont care about what other people say your amazing! im still gonna watch all your programs
can’t wait for the next series! and whens this ‘twist’ gonna come??? x
At the end of the show wasn’t derren stood outside the truck next to one of the camera crew wearing a hat and standing with a giant £180000 cheque? Happened as the camera panned out at the end?
Wow that was close, too close!
loved the way it ended… “we will get your money back!” haha
Wouldn’t it be cool if derren was like that guy off the film “Next”??
So he could see what happened before it happened, like with the reading on the speedometer!?
Hi Joe, I’ve just replayed the show and there WAS a guy stood outside the truck with a cheque, but it wasn’t Derren. I can only assume it was in the event that Derren was successful, that they could present Ben with his winnings there and then….. bad luck Derren, maybe next time x
derren = god no human could be that great <3
I enjoyed this almost as much as Derren’s makeup exploits at university.
Nevermind, Derren. Have been a massive fan of yours for many years, and will continue to be so. Everything you do is still wonderfully amazing!!
Quite an interesting read, this. Are you banned in casinos overseas as well?
Bought your book the other day. Working my way through it. Hopefully getting tickets to Enigma for March next year.
Just wondering, if you do infact get round to reading this, amongst your busy lifestyle, then it’d be great if you could send me a quickie with a guess as to how old I am
tej_radia@hotmail.co.uk
Thanks again for a great series: You had me stuck to my sofa all the way!
Can’t wait for more!!

Does anyone else think Derren’s ‘Casino Days’ sound like something out of a Bond movie?
Actually, thinking about it, Derren could probably be the ultimate Bond Baddie….
Haha, that’s brilliant !
I can’t believe they banned you, surely that can’t be allowed just because you’re a smartarse?!

Ooooh that made me laugh. Bless.
Of course, this could all be staged to make his other stunts seem less staged. The whole thing looked really phoney to me.
@Joe, I saw the cheque, just not the guy holding it.
I did expect Derren to come round the corner at any minute.
Casino looked faked, as did the time it took to get there, and in as he was “just around the corner”
Also, if a guy has enough money in his bank account that he can a) withdraw £5000 and b) withdraw £5000 and not have problems with overdrafts/direct debits/ and not notice for like a week; then he has nothing to worry about as far as money is concerned, and likely didnt deserve the winnings if their were any anyway.
I also loved the “im on the phone and my tv is on, and yet it takes me 2 minutes to realise its my house and me on the screen”.
Im suprised not one picked up on this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/lewis12345113/2a98sch.jpg
Bottom right
This doesn’t ring true to me. I’ve never met a pit boss yet who had quarms about stepping in on a big bet. It’s called risk management and is part of their job. Anyone who is regularly in a casino wouldn’t bat an eyelash at a pit boss refusing a large bet. And there aren’t any 100% foolproof ways of betting… It just ain’t possible.
Did anyone else notice the number 30 on the side of one of the trucks. That was the number the ball landed on. That can’t be coincidence.
Mr Brown you amuse me most highly and I love your work but moreover your persona! Definately one of my favourite human beings since forever, you’re a mind-stretching gem xxx
Maybe he will stop gambling… for good.
I love Derren Brown and his shows, but the Roulette thing was pre-recorded and he had a voice over. He had to be one out to try to prove its real, but also so channel 4 don’t need to pay out. Sorry Derren, i will still admire you though
TONIGHT DERREN HAS HIS REVENGE!!!
Been thinking hard about this one and the endind didn’t really work for me. Great setup though.
Think about the way DB works. At the top of the show in the (excellent) spray can gag he told us that the show was all about the FEELING of the gamble. The stuff with Westwood was ezxcellent and the ball in the squashcourt could well have been an (Impressive) rerun of the horse racing stunt (ie he only showed us the one that worked).
What did we actually see of the casino? Actually, nothing. We only have the word of a master of “misdirection and showmanship” that he wasn’t on a soundstage in Elstree. That he landed one number away from the target supposedly shows us that his method of watching the ball bounce nearly worked (and on another day, might).
Is a casino really that quiet on a Friday night at 11pm?
I think the show was all about the feelings he put Sweatpatchboy through – making him think that he NEARLY won.
The ending was Classic Derren Brown – leaving us thinking it had gone wrong. (remember the Russian Roulette?)
I was expecting a bit of an explanation at the end of the show… but would we all be blogging and twittering so much if he HAD??
As for the exchange rate well, google it- as of 9am 3/10/09 you will find1 British pound = 1.09123937 Euros
5000quid is about 5400 euros MINUS COMMISSION. I would round it to a 5000 Euro bet in a Casino- wouldn’t you? (Assuming) I have £5000 to spend in a Casino!
Personally, I didn’t like this as an end to the series- But I loved the show and I’m still a huge fan.
Mr Brown, staged or not that was some pretty tense tv! In fact if it WAS staged it is almost as impressive as if it wasn’t, so kudos!
If you want to give it another go I can have a dig down the back of the sofa and I’ll turn my bank account over to you (not sure which of the two would contain the most money…)!
Keep up the good work and ignore the people who are putting you down of your lack of perfection!
Hi
Love Derren BUT, does anybody else think the trick with the match boxes and the £20.00 was cruel? In your book Derren you say that you do not approve of making people feel foolish on stage by Hypnosis, How did that poor girl feel if not stupid and a “looser”
ooh – that ‘derren’ guy sounds like a gentleman
Ok what are you up to Derren? Love the story about banned from casinos by the way but you’re driving me crazy trying to guess what you’re up to. I don’t believe for a minute last night’s Event went wrong (well ok maybe for a minute but then I came to my senses and remembered it was you we were talking about). You are playing with our minds again -but then I suppose that’s what you get paid to do! What next for us gullible fools?
Your an inspiration to people and great shows. Last night though was supposed to end like that though, mis direction. You were proving that you were genuine and showing all your other episodes were not faked. Getting it wrong by just one spot, was supposed to happen. after all lets face it, if you had won Ben 180k, people would of just said that the cassino wasn’t real, and you paid him out of your’e own pockedt. Very clever to get it wrong once in a while. Not that i doubt you at all, and i tune in ever time your’e on. Good luck with new shows and hope the two months passes fast.x
Derren: I feel like you’re my neigbour. Being an ophelin, I grew up without parents and I think we could work together!? I’m not ante-casinos but as my house is ruined, maybe take a spin, I have no wheels and so let me know where to meet?
Treblese7en
Derren Sweetie,
Fantastic show and series- never thought you would actuallly win as C4 could have been in a bit of hot water for using your techniques to, in the Casino’s view, “cheat” – so being one out was perfect and maybe we read too much into your shows but I noticed the number 30 on the truck as Ben was walking to the TV presentation suite. Now maybe that number 30 on the truck was a co-incidence and maybe it wasn’t and maybe it was live in a casino and maybe it wasn’t and maybe it was all real and maybe it wasn’t.
But It was an amazing 60 mins of TV and unlike anthing else I’ve seen recently. The “down-beat” ending made me smile and admire your showmanship even more – brillant stuff!
To Sainsburys for the 3D glasses…

Derren is a sexy fox. Cunning, hyper intelligent, his DNA alone started to congratulate itself. His dress sense is incredible and the more I think about him the more my homosexual tendencies kick in.
Very Interesting.
I am looking into a book by Derren, ‘tricks of the mind’. Its on my amazon wish list atm, hopefully will have the money to get it soon.
Also, just wondering it anyone knew of a book [possibly written partly by Derren himself] about the atheist bus campaign, or one thats written by the same people who thought it up. It was recommended to me and they said they swear part of it was written by the man himself.
- check out the book section in the store – phillis
Thanks, cannot wait to see more stuff by Mr Brown!x
Very clever, if the whole series had ended up with a 100% success record people would be suspicious and think it were faked. This way there is dissapointment yet you can see how close he was, making everything appear less staged.
Cannot believe you were 1 out

) x
but i havent lost faith in any way, you are still amazing and Yummy
I also cant believe that was the last one. What can i do now on a friday
Without Derren my life is over for another year.Shame really.
Lets just hope the next series is as good as all the others;)
love Paris xxx <3
