We like to report on conspiracy theories in all their glorious forms. Quite often you only get one, well formed side of the argument – whether right or wrong there’s always 2 sides (sometimes more) and usually one side is better funded, more backed up, easier to grasp than the other. But let’s not bury our heads in the sand and see all sides. I love a “fake moon landing” documentary as much as the next, but I can watch it safe in the knowledge it really happened because I used to work in a special effects department and I know fake TV when I see it. Some of them are even quite convincing at times.
So that people can be informed about what the others side says this process is necessary. At this point we get the few angry ranters who criticise us for even reporting such a story and think that this represents OUR beliefs or that were “helping the opposition” or tell us our blog has “dramatically gone down hill” for even mentioning it.
However on this occasion we have BOTH sides of the argument in lovely clear detail from the wonderful lot at informationisbeautiful.net. Admittedly this is a “debunking the 2012 theory” graphic and I’m sure that some 2012 end-of-worlders will have a pop. But I appeal to you to make your own lovely graphic like the one below and we’ll show that too (unless it’s rubbish then we’ll ignore you and call you crazy). And the 2012 movie with John Cusack doesn’t count because it’s very very silly.
I wish there were more “both sides” things like this.

An easy way to debunk this in one simple paragraph.
Humanity created the concept of time and space, time and space itself does not really exist, it is self created by us and us alone. Think of it this way….when we are born why do we claim to be 1 day old when in true fact we are 9 months and 1 day old…in theory everyone is already older than they claim but again humanity has chosen for some bizarre reason to not count this fact. Our own creation concept of time is purely based on guesstimates alone, just like we cannot truly say how old the universe is itself, we cannot predict when it will end. Of course it will end some day when the sun dies and becomes a black hole as it will eventually do but it is not a given time and it’s a waiting game……but it won’t end when the scholars claim it will
And of course they seem to have forgotten that little know fact…..
The Boxing Day Tsunami that occured in 2004 was a major signifigance in chanign this planet forever. Being that it registered between 9.2 and 9.3 n the richter scale making it the second most powerful earthquake recorded and also for the one magical altering fact…..
The earthquake was so powerful that it actually altered earths axis by just a mere .degrees, this amazing effect had another amazing knock on effect….it took around 3 seconds off a normal categoric day….so where it used to take 24 hours for earth to complete it’s little trek…it now takes around 23 hours, 59 minutes and 57 seconds…hence we no longer have 24hr days but because everyone is used to 24hr days they have decided to keep it like that to save problems worldwide. Therefore 2012 is wrong
what I read in this page seems convincing interms of logical arguments and some assumption
BUT as to me it lacks truth interms of perspective you tried to explain how 2012 could be the end of the world MAYAS WORLD based on astronomical ,so this is your perspective any way
Interms of Christians perspective , we know the that some day this world will end and ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but GOD did not let us know when this could hapen and in any case we can not determine that and say 2012 .IF we do that we are saying
My understanding is that if you are a genuine Myan you are screwed more than the rest of us who are screwed at a slower rate due to mankinds carelessness with the planet.
If Myans had any sense they would have vanished a long time ago …. oh hang on . . .
Do you refer to the Operation lune documentary in your article?
- Operation Loon? – Phillis
Guess we´ll see if and what happens…time may be a human concept but we understand the cycles in nature because of it, not that it proves anything…just saying.
Good post…
Operation lune/Dark side of the moon (France,2002)
“The end of the Mayan calendar signifies the end of a cycle, and the end of the world.”
Oh… oh shit. My calendar ends on the 31st of December this year. Should we be worried?
YES!

Mankind’s desperation to believe in end-of-world myths have not changed since The Book of Revelations or AD 999 or 1982 (?) for Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Mayans were powerful but not particularly wise or humane. After all, tearing the hearts out of children has not been found to be a reliable insurance of a decent harvest. Let’s forget Instutional and Alternative Superstitions and get on with life.
@Jay – I’m pretty sure that when I was a nerdy little kid (about 30 years ago – I’m now a nerdy little middle-aged man) that the a day (defined by rotation about it’s axis) was something like 23h 56m. But don’t take my word for it.
I’m not sure why people are spending so much time debunking such rubbish. Who actually really believes this stuff. And so what if they do?
Having said that, there is more evidence in this story than there is for God! So who’s crazy!!!
I don’t presume that my belief or disbelief in something will cause or prevent an event from occuring.
I think the problem with conspiracy ‘theories’ is that so many people have cried wolf before that the theorists themselves are automatically debunked without question in the public arena.
I’m reserving judgement on 2012. I’ve been aware of the theory for around 10 years now and have read a lot on the matter. It seems to me that whilst lots of effort & research goes into the work of a believer in the phenomena, the sceptic simply has to say that it’s nonsense, without presenting a concise, structured argument. In that case, I would tend to side with the believers. Although, saying that, maybe they’re just opportunists profiting from the fear of our own mortality that exists in us deep down..
. 3 Years & 29 Days to go…
Ehehehehe ….. the never ending debate between those … it’s their main drive in life .. without that .. they are nothing apparently.
In reality .. there’s nothing .. seeing all sides is not burying your head in the sand … it’s just what is says .. seeing all sides .. from above … no need to take a stand in all things .. as it really wont matter quite often what you in your not so old self wishes to see … the universe continues … the ways of energy … skeptics and believers … Skeptics are believers too though .. they believe in what they think …. so there’s is no two sided in this either the way they put it out here …
Let’s get on to real issues … to things that really do matter in our small daily lifes .. 2012 is not different than today for most of us … some will need to see something in 2012, others don’t.
So who gives a toss?
If this 2012 twaddle does – by some absurd circumstance which may (or may not) have anything to do with anything said here – turn out to be the end of the world, nobody’s going to be around to say ”We were right and you were wrong – ner nerni nerner’.
This, btw, applies to all eotw scenarios.
Oh good grief! What is it with these loonies and their “end of the world” predictions? Jay, you need to seek professional help.
They seem to think everything thats going to happen, Cant happen because it hastnt been like that before,
Just because it hastnt happened before it doestnt mean it CANT happen, Anything can happen to be honest,
I hope (and belive) it wont happen,
But it would be good to see it what happens really… as long as we all lived
I think the really important thing to remember here is that 21/12 2012 is the date of the alien invasion. I’m going to trust Mulder on this one…
I find it all rather educational. You learn about how people come to believe certain theories. Just how deep in to the research each side goes, and plenty about Mayan Calendars, earth axis rotations, calendaring systems etc.
This doesn’t seem like a “both sides” to me. It seems like a poster written by the skeptic side, where they cherry pick the factually inaccurate items. It’s written from left to right, and there are *no* rebuttals on the “believer” side to a statement on the “skeptic” side.
Don’t get me wrong. 2012 being the end of the world is rubbish. The earth has been here for millions of years. Inserting some human time table into the span of millions of years of un-recorded history in the sol system, and saying that out of those millions of years that only two thousand and twelve of them matter is ridiculous. (Maybe around 3500 if you count BCE ?)
There is hype and truth about 2012 even some doom and gloom. At Woodstock Universe we believe 2012 is the beginning not the end. What we envision now post-2012 to be, is what will manifest.
Check out 2012 info and listen to RADIO WOODSTOCK 69 which features only music from the original Woodstock era (1967-1971) and RADIO WOODSTOCK with live music from the original Woodstock era to today’s artists who reflect the spirit of Woodstock. Watch Woodstock TV.

Great Article. Was surprised to see that a rapid polar shift is deemed “impossible” considering there is evidence out there to suggest that it has happened in the past. Also, doesn’t history suggest that the end of every precessional age brings serious upheaval in our climate etc? Could this be where the “end of the world” lark comes from?

Well it has to be like that, because the skeptic side has to be rebutting, if it weren’t for the believer side there wouldn’t be any skeptic side to the argument since it wouldn’t exist.
- Actually this sums up MOST of the main arguments by “believers”. Feel free to rebut here. I’m all ears – Phillis
yeah I don’t think this is at all ‘two sided’, but anything that disproves the ridiculousness of 2012 is fine with me. The people I know and have met who do believe in 2012 seem to think that Area 51 are going to release government built alien aircrafts which they can fight and force humanity to be controlled by martial law and this does not debunk such a theory. But really, only cutting down on weed would.
This is humorous, as most skeptics still believe that 2012 is supposed to signify the end of the world, which is just a media born myth. @Phillis, I sent you an email, containing a long article which goes indepth about 2012, did you get the email? If you did, did you read the article? If not to the former, i’ll re-email.
Forgetting all the guff and apparent experts opinions – if we look at why the calender may have stopped. Invasion – plague – no point after 2012 whatever it was – if it is bad – then ask what they knew we dont. How did they conclude that after 2012 pretty much no point carrying on. And the only thing that they could reference would be stellar in origin. So If they witnessed some fuck off asteroid and worked out that it would be back in 2012 – the “experts” would not even know it was out there. I mean we only know about comets because when someone saw it they told everyone. If they had not – one fine night shitloads of us would suddenly see it for the apparent first time. Until its seen and reported arrogantly we assume it does not exists. So for my money – if it is going to be bad – look at a stellar reason particularly large asteroid.
Oh and before everyone starts shooting my theory down – stellar object recognition is only as good as the human written software is at classifying what its seeing. If it isnt in its software database – it really wont exists – its the same with military sonar. It says a noise it out there but if its not in the database of noises it cant call it anything. So that goes on the Dunno pile. And your looking at an infinite ocean when looking at the universe. Lots of unknowns. Unknown metals and rocks.
@Valis why the heck do i need to seek professional help…if you read my post correctly you would be seeing that i DO NOT think the world will end in 2012….neither am i on here posting to everyone to get ready for the apocalypse….jeesh.
What i do think is that the world WILL end one day whether you like it or not mate….in all science and understanding that we have of the world….it cannot and will not go on forever but i am not beating myself up over it and neither am i out there preaching it to every given man that the end of the world is flipping nigh. Any which way or loose human beings will destroy this planet eventually….proof of that is all around us today.
OK this is utter crap about the the world ending…. if it does so what, spend ur credit card have some fun theres nothing we can do to stop it as we have made this Problem.
the mayan calender ends con 2012 BUT it is 2 years infront of ours soooooo
if the worlds gonna end its gonna end december 21st 2010 right so if we live 4 next chrismas then is bullcrap
There are mixed opinions over this topic though…. THE WORLD IS NOT GOING TO GO BANG! the world isnt going to end… we are we will be wiped Out by volcanos, Tsunamis, that kinda rubbish! There will be humans Existing just our generation will be wiped out… well that is my understanding about this.
Signed: Matt
Damn shame there’ll be idiots out there that’ll think this is worth killing themselves over.
2012 is nothing but pure lulz, blown out of proportion. I mean, the whole ZetaTalk business with Nancy Lieder…Anyone who butchers the deductions of Zacharia Sitchin and then insists that people conduct a mass dog slaughter sounds more like they need to see a psychiatrist than rally citizens for salvation from ‘the end’. I’m not against belief in aliens and wierd conspiracy theories, or that people might have alien microchips in their brains…I just don’t think that things like that should even be listened to when the person saying them is clearly so nuts.
If 2012 brings anything, my money’s on the further fall of the economy. Or maybe people will take it upon themselves to cause havoc all year because of this.
Great things to look forward to
Space as a concept must exist for if there is no space where are we? But yes we created time with the concept that we are born and die that therefore everthing must begin and end, which explains why people like the Big Bang Theory because it give a begging so shouldn’t have end? Although the concept of passing time is quite sound for it helps with organization. I So if i have a dissertation I have to write if there was no time I wouldn’t right it because it wouldn’t be due because it can’t be due on thursday because thursday is part of and time dosen’t exist, so man-made but necessary. BUT there is no need for the beggining and end to all things.
Brother, you never found the end of the word will coming, because God is the universe it self; but sure civilization will end due to they kill its others; and the new civilization will coming; like new moning will broken then sunset will goes down; its like this from the beginning; every mesias will doing the God’s servant will and always bring the new civillzation; like they done from beginning, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Yesus, Muhhamad and the other will coming to change the world: No eternity in the universe except the changes its self.!!!
