This bizarre image over at skytopia is a 3D rendering of the commonly seen 2D fractal pattern. The initial idea was initially though about 20 years ago by science fiction writer Randy Rucker. Called the Mandlebulb it was sort of forgotten about until recently. With modern computers rendering these shots is considerably easier. Have a look and scroll through the images. The images are quite beautiful – carry on to page 2. Also linked is this rather stunning video by Rena Jones:
Kris Northern - Open Me Slowly 3D Fractal Video
Thanks to David Greenley for the link.

These piks are AMAZING …. Like another world
And all from Maths !!!
Awesome. Wish I had dreams like this.
The skytopia mandle bulb was beautiful to watch
thankyou .
Randy Rucker should read Rudy Rucker.
Thanks
Just a note – only the music is by Rena Jones. The video itself is by someone called Kris Northern.
- oh noez! Terribly sorry to Kris for bungling that – have updated, thorough apologies all round to everyone. – Phillis
I’m studying maths at uni and i just wish they’d show us more things like this during the lectures. Somehow, writing the equation formally defining the mandelbrot set on a blackboard isn’t quite as evocative.
Hm .. after having read what fractals are .. (it remains kinda vague on wikipedia …. I mean .. brocolli??? that’s not similarities in there?! Nor in this picture above .. how ever nice it may look (it is kinda endless in my eyes, intrigues .. goes on and on .. similarities, constantly, would be a bore .. well, let alone a few ..)
And why no comment from David .. what does he like about fractals? Maybe he could have explained more properly (no math pls .. it’s not only about mathematical fractals ..) …
My dictionary does not even have this word in it … My brain knew the word .. vaguely something mathematical or such to it .. but that was about it .. as if you have heard it somewhere and know the term .. but not more than that ..
I don’t really get what is so special about making 3d from 2d (not a new thing I mean).
you can download fractal programmes quite freely i haven’t worked out the best one yet though, still trying them.

Anyway…love the blog posts! Keep them coming guys!
They look like naughty space veggies
Thanks for highlighting fractals
I’m a newish fractalist and didnt have these links – Xenodream is amazing..will have to check it out, I’ve never used it myself….
Brilliant feature!
What is so hypnotic about these fractal ‘creatures’. Beautiful.
I just wanted to take you all to the next level.
