Inamura Yoneiji, a 89-year-old local of the area, created the statue in tribute to the souls of the insects, most of which are beetles. Talking about the statue, Yoneiji says “For children in the years immediately after World War II, Japan was poor and there was little entertainment available, aside from catching bugs.
However, every bug would eventually die after being caught. By making a statue of a Buddha from their dead bodies, perhaps their souls can rest in peace.” And how much more peaceful could a statue of Buddha get, with the bodies of bugs extended into a new life to pay homage to Buddha.

Awww I actually think that its a cute idea!
Minging!
Oh my god, I’m going to have nightmares about this where the bugs all come back to life and come after me!
That’s a lot of patience…
i think that is nt made up of real bugs? they must hve bn good painters back then when they made their budha
clever but gross as!
xx
That’s… nice?
That’s being creative and resourceful with a medium.
That’s it, when I die I want an effigy made from bugs! (This is in addition to previous requests to have my corspe stuffed and mounted in the local pub)
Pretty cool
That’s awesome. Wish the picture was bigger so that I could get a good look!
The colours are really vivid. Those were some healthy-livin’ bugs.
creative! ..i like it

In ref to previous post, this is not being morbid, a Psychic told me I’ll die at 24 (2 years ago – so I’m the living dead as it is!), I felt the need to plan ahead!
One word SUBLIME!
I remember going to an exhibition of sculptures made of bugs in Bristol in 1997. The closer you get the less you want to stay in the same room…
I always thought Bhuddists in general took great care not to hurt a fly. Well I guess it feeds into their notion of everything being “impermanent” so that part fits with their beliefs.
Maybe they should re-name this one the ‘bhugga’?
Thats amazing!…
So, we’ve had cigarette butts, coat hangers, toothpicks, coke cans, toilet paper rolls, cauliflower, wishbones, a house made out of beer bottles, chicken wire, and old tyres; and now, dead bugs. What next???
Hey flapjack, if you read it, it’s made from bugs which are already dead (cause the children caught it as they had nothing better to do) so technically they weren’t killing any bugs. Just using dead ones
Erm…. I suppose it IS beautiful (such vibrant colours).

Nice one, Flapjack.
I think this is a wonderful gesture and all the naysayers can buzz off!
Seriously, though, if this was made of spiders I would start crying right now and never, ever stop.

Another word ‘CRUNCHY’ !!!

Kids? He himself ofcourse killed them all, probably by letting them starve to death by not feeding them or such. Not much of a tribute in this, seeing this useless statue. Old cultures who honoured the animals before they ate them after having killed them … those I find more respectfull.
