There are a few iPhone magic apps out there. The problem is that they don’t really work all that well. The various card prediction apps are OK, but you can work it out in some cases and the result is at best a little deflating, even when you do manage to work out the cumbersome technique. However finally someone has released a rather fantastic prediction/mind reading app that genuinely triggers that “wow – how did you do that?” response.
That person is Mr Wiseman himself. What’s really good about this one is that your victim is the one who touches the iPhone – not you. In doing so it removes any sort of “method of picking up the phone” and you get a genuinely surprised response. One suggestion was that “it’s just voice recognition software” so we get them to signal the number by holding up fingers, or writing it down – it still works! – and any trick that works twice is a very good trick.
There’s a tiny learning curve and it’s flexible enough to tweak to your own delivery. With the piles of junk so readily available at the Apps store I had to admit I was initially sceptical (of course) – but we’re rather impressed with this one and at 59p it’s a friggin’ bargain.
If you manage to get some results and reactions on video – upload to you tube or send us a link. Please remember though – NO REVEALS!

Got it this morning. Is vv good!
He did say 4, during the second time round, so the voice recognition idea is not yet out. But as I don’t have an iPhone I can’t subject it to rigorous testing. But very well done to the programmer =].
How cool is that app. I think I know how it works , but I am still going to download it for my Ipod Touch though. Cool stuff Darren.

*cough* derren..
good luck with that, Alex
Ohh that´s just a goood idea…smarty´s!
I want to play! Who do I know who has an iphone? Noone. Not fair.
When you download it there’s a little video that says to …..
´ignoring that´ at 2.16 mins…..Ermm, ignoring what exactly?!
My boss downloaded this and it’s genuinely awesome. I suspect his phone is now possessed by demons.
The think she wanted to do if she could pick anything.
wander what it would be…..
“If you want to impress [...] ladies like Jenny [...] try this app”
dirty boy… >.<
These things are always for the iPhone……
LC x
Great stuff if you have an iphone!
Thanks for the post about this Derren! I grabbed it on my way out the door to class and can’t wait to watch the how-to video once I’m near an open internet connection.
I think I worked it out, nice tip at the end there. Just look what he does before he puts it down on the table.
Just checked the App store, and it also works on Ipod touch – But only 2nd gen or later…
1st gen didnt have a speaker, volume toggle – perhaps a less accurate motion sensor too?
However it still doesnt have microphone, so that rules that theory out!
On a related note has anyone tried the Stare@goats app? Really simple trick that does get rather good reactions from anyone watching!
i love richard wiseman he’s really funny and he looks like my dad
ive attended a conference he spoke at and it was my best experience as an a-level student
he’s a very cool guy wish i had an iphone…if you have BUY IT
love it x
The iPhone is far too much of a thief magnet to be of practical use and is a tad too big to carry around.
Don’t feel bad that you don’t own one. Be proud you’re not a sheep and buy a tasty compact mobile phone (and if needed an iPod Touch as there are loads of apps for it: I reccomend the game Alter Ego, a port of the classic text based life sim which leads you from birth to death).
- This app requires speakers really so not recommended for iTouch users. – Phillis
To Phillis.
So called 2nd gen (from last year) & 3rd gen (this year) Ipod Touches do have speakers, (a very quiet one though, not that useful for noisey “dates” as Prof Wiseman has reccomended for the apps useage (!) (;).
1st gen iPod Touches don’t have speakers; however, Richard Wiseman has offered a refund (59p) or an “intresting gift” to those who’s unit the app doesn’t work on, which is a polite and kind gesture, in a cruel world. (:
Of course, why you need a speaker will forever remain a mistery…
- ah yes well pointed out… Thanks for clearing that up – Phillis
What a cute little application!
Now there really is an app for just about anything. They should put this on the IPhone adverts:
“If you’re looking for a good takeaway…there’s an app for that.
If you’re fixing a wonky bookshelf…there’s an app for that.
If you’re trying to read someone’s mind…there’s even an app for that.”
When are they going to invent the app for solving world hunger?
Well, i hope it works on my ipod touch. Its 3rd generation, so it has speakers, does the app need a microphone? Because my touch doesnt have one,
I’m really lazy and cant be bothered buying itunes cards (even if the app is for $1.19).
So if i know that it fully works without me buying a microphone or getting ripped off, then i’ll pay for it.
Nice app idea btw/.
Had a little play around and if you are very good with your timing and showmanship while the app does its magic you COULD get away with it on a speakerless ipod touch….
Though that does mean someone like Derren could get away with it, I however would cock it up
If you want to be able to read your spectator’s mind, you should try my app, ESP Tester Pro: http://bit.ly/4bdF5c
Please let me know if you like it!

Can we have this app created for other phones as well please, for example LG phones? So I can try it out? Cheers if you can
In the comments on Richard Wiseman’s blog announcement of Telepath, someone suggested that there’s a mini Derren Brown inside the iPhone who reads the correct answer.
Thanks for the review and for the video especially! I really like the idea of this app, looks funny, though I don`t get how it works)
