Not sure what you think of this trailer – but it’s seems quite clearly that Hollywood has got their hands on Sherlock Holmes and given him the US style makeover. Will you be going to see it?

I’m very much looking forward to it. No, it won’t be a faithful adaptation of the books – which I love – but I’m hoping for a rollicking action adventure to banish the post-Christmas blues for a couple of hours.
Fuck, no!
I LOVE RDjr
Will I being seeing Sherlock Holmes by Guy Ritchie? I would rather lick Marmite off John Prescott.
YES YES YES YES YES! As many times as he has messed up i love Robert Downy Jr. It might not be true to the original books (ok, i should have said it WILL not be true) but that doesn’t mean it will not be a great film. I have been looking forward to this for months.
I think it will highly entertaining for some and horribly inconsistent for others and a lot of people will be mortified as to what they’ve done to him. I shall be going to see if because I have a child inside me who just loves to see things explode.
Interesting to see it as a Hollywood makeover when it’s a Guy Ritchie film. I won’t be bothering, but I’m not a Guy Ritchie fan.
Will you be going to see it? Absolutely Not!!! I saw this trailer when i went to go see District 9 and thought it looked like a really bad idea then, and i haven’t changed my mind.
Even my girfriend, who complains when i watch the old Jeremy Brett episodes on tele, says she thinks they’ve ruined it… so i’m glad it’s not just me.
What’s next?
Morse and Lewis as a pair of wise-cracking gay detectives in a ‘will-they-won’t-they-you’ll-have-to-wait-till-season-14-to-find-out’ relationship (beating off more than just bad guys!?)
Bananaman as a cop-in-the-edge gambling alcoholic with a broken marriage?
We must be nearing the end of civilisation by now, surely… i think it’s the bees’ turn next
This looks brilliant!
At least the majority of the cast have English accents. They haven’t done a ‘prince of thieves’ job!
Robrert Downey Junior is fantastic! Will definitely be going to see it.
Thanks Phillis!!
I am not a huge fan of movies being given the US Hollywood Makeover BUT I will be going to see this but mainly because I am a looooongtime fan of RDJ and he just seems to get better with time and age, I really do hope that the film is good though would be a shame to crap on such a classic.
NO!
I have to say despite looking like a very bizarre version of Sherlock Holmes’ adventures, i do like the idea that its much more upbeat and much less sombre (and Victorian I suppose).
In the hands of anyone other than the abominable Guy Ritchie, I’d be thrilled at the idea of a Sherlock Holmes reboot. But unfortunately, it is in the hands of Guy Ritchie, which probably means Holmes is going to be defending the honor of Kabbalah — with a terrible script, paper-thin characterisation and plotlines even more impossibly contrived than some of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s less accomplished adventures….
And I love Robert Downey Jr, but that terrible Dick Van Dyke impression will grate after three seconds. It’s worse than Johnny Depp’s.
Terrible shame. Jeremy Brett will be turning in his grave.
It looks absolutely terrible and I will almost certainly see it.
Holmes wasn’t a sombre, proper kind of guy. He fraternised with street kids and used them as spies, hung out in opium dens (for the “clues”), used cold reading to freak people out, had serious issues with women, got himself into fights and as a detective was just on the edge of respectability. Can’t wait for this adaptation.
Oh come on for God’s (If he exists)
sake it is obviously not going to be some kind of text book adaptation that is consistent to any vision that Sir A C-D would See (See what I tried to do there? A C-D See)
Any how the fact is it just a tongue in cheek, cor blimey guvnor, romp around the screen with a bit of action to titillate your senses for about an hour and a half. It is not going for any Oscar nomination it is just movie by numbers it is there to entertain. I wish people would stop being so dam up them selves about some films. This was a film that was never meant to be taken as a serious nod to historical recreation just enjoy it.
If you really are wanting a diabolical waste of money screen space and wet painted walls drying would be better then see 2012.
looks like a lot of fun. big fan of all things RDJ and am currently playing the free online game. the agme is afoot ho ho http://www.221b.sh
Downey is S Holmes? Well …
A bit Bond stuff but then kept more authentic from what I see .. (they jump a lot in water, ay ..).
Sherlock Holmes meets Wild Wild West by the look of it.
I’ll wait ’till it comes out on tv probably…I usually wait ’till movies come out on tv as you can tell roughly what it’s like by which channel it’s on
I understand that this film was to be released earlier, but the Hollywood bigwigs looked at it and said “Say, didn’t Holmes fight some guy, Moriarty? Yeah, even though the film is in the can and in post production and Sherlock didn’t encounter Moriarty on every mystery, open it up again and put Brad Pitt in as his arch nemesis. Damn it! I said write him in, change the already complete story and add extra scenes. They won’t notice, they’re dumb mooks!”.
Word for word, that’s what they said.
Hope it’s as good as Swept Away, Revolver, RocknRolla …. that Guy just can’t fail to impress!!!
Awright Sherlock… you toilet, I’ll go see your facking film!
Elementary my dear Watson, you have one of those unlimited cineworld cards… you slaaag.
Not sure that he’s Holmes (that would be Jeremy Brett) but I want to see it, it looks funny & I love funny.
“Get that thing out of my face”
I may go and see this, but it will primarily be so that I can complain about it, and I shan’t be paying for it.
The primary objection I have to this is that it is meant to be a Sherlock Holmes story. Why introduce physical comedy and Hollywood action into a milieux that is totally unsuited to them? Why not just create your own damn character?
Oh yes, it’s because they want to cash in on Holmes’s fandom to obtain a larger audience than this film would otherwise deserve.
IF it encourages ignorant people to read the original fiction then I suppose it will have served /some/ purpose, but that’s the best I can say for it based on the trailer.
He DID fight Moriarty, and threw him into a fast-flowing river while faking his own death in the process, in the original stories.
Ever since I saw the trailer for this film during the summer, I’ve wanted to see this film. Sure, they don’t seem like the conventional choice of actors to play these roles, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this film’s gonna be GOOOOD!
Oh no, that looks terrible, why didn’t they get Derren to play Sherlock? he wouldn’t have had to act!
I absolutely love Sherlock Holmes, but I’ve learnt never to expect much from the films, because no actor has ever gotten him right (except for Jeremy Brett, who was amazing.) I think it’s safe to say that Robert Downey Jr is going to be waaaaaay off with his interpretation of Holmes, but to be honest, I think they’ve stopped trying to portray the Holmes that’s in the original stories; you just can’t do it (unless you’re Jeremy Brett, who, again, was awesome.) It won’t be anywhere near as good as the books, but it might still be entertaining. I think I’ll see it.
Definately! Can’t wait for the release.
I saw a trailer for this at the cinema the other day, and it does look good, and certainly RDJ is likeable enough as Sherlock Holmes.
As to whether I shall pay money to see it at the cinema…….not sure. But I’m sure it’ll do well…..
LC x
Definitely not! It looks crap-tastic.
I think that it’s going to be good fun.
I can’t wait!! The wife has a mad crush on Robert Downey Jr. and to be honest, I think I may too.
Come to think of it, with the possible exception of the dog, I could see myself making out with everyone in the preview. lol
What a gorgeous hunk of casting. I hope the story is passable.
Argh, must everything be rebooted to a CGI action fest.
my favorite holmes was ronald howard on old british TV. but i also liked christopher plummer in “murder by decree”…& especially james mason as watson!
Heck yeah. I would be forced to see it for either RDjnr or Mark Strong (who is genius inThe Long Firm by the way). RDjnr made Iron Man passable and he may save even a Guy Ritchie flick (but don’t quote me on tet!)
I have been going through the Sherlock Holmes stories and have been hooked. Moriarity would be the clear choice for the super villain, not Irene Adler. I may go to it just to see how Robert Downey Junior pulls of the immensely interesting Sherlock Holmes.
I’m really very surprised how much I like this trailer, having been convinced the film would be awful. I am mostly impressed with RDJ’s accent, which is spot on middle class Edinburgh.
and no, Holmes was not the clean cut Gent so properly portrayed by other actors – even though I adore all adaptions I have seen. This could seriously work, and work well. I think I will def. go see
HELL YEAH am I going to see it. I love all things Holmes, but as I’ve said to people before, I don’t consider this film to be canon or even semi-canon — just a bit of fun, a mix of Holmes and Bond with some Hollywood magic thrown in. Awesome. Much better than that lame tv series that made everyone think Holmes was some boring sod with a penchant for traveling caps (hint: in the original stories, he only wears one of those when, well, traveling — he usually wears a top hat, like most gentlemen of the era).
AKA “Pirates of Londinium”
nonononononononononono
I’ve been reading as much of Conan Doyle’s Holmes as possible before this comes out, and as a big RDJ fan I can’t wait. As not much of a Guy Ritchie fan I’m worried!
BTW – in case anyone has an interest – I did a caricature of RDJ as Sherlock Holmes for a course earlier in the year, here’s a link (it’s also on my website):

holy crap richard davies single serving jack that caricature is amazing
