VICTORIA, B.C. – Brigette Horvath knew she saw something strange in Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island two years ago and a team of researchers say she might be right.
Was it a fish, an eel or some kind of serpent-like creature? She says she didn’t know. But Horvath grabbed her camera and managed to fire off one shot before the batteries failed.
The researchers who specialize in looking for so-called crytozoological creatures – in other words, monsters – spent Saturday on the lake probing the depths with a sonar-like fish finder.
At first, they picked up a couple of large contacts at the bottom of the lake, about 45 metres deep, then something more pronounced on a second pass.
“Something just went ‘ping’ on the alarm on the fish finder and we saw this absolutely massive object in the midst of various fish,” said John Kirk, president of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club.
They made four more passes and the contact held stable, making it unlikely that it was a school of fish, which tend to scatter eventually, Kirk said.
“We were quite stunned that there was something that big in the lake and it was in about 60 feet of water, less than 30 yards from shore, it was quite amazing,” he said.
Horvath, who lives in Nanaimo, said she was driving along Highway 4 on July 30, 2007, when she saw a strange semi-circle in the lake.

Oh my god, that’s really scary :S That picture is gonna haunt me now lol. Terrifying yet i want to know more
maybe the loch ness monster emigrated for winter?
That simply cant be real. Or am I missing something.
What?
Hrmm… maybe that thing is responsible for eating all of our jobs!
I really hope that is a real creature! And I hope it possesses Derek Acorah at some point.
Harsh, I know, but fair…
Does no one remember this? It’s not new and it’s not real. This thing has been around for years. It’s nothing more than a fake monster fish made by a crazed taxidermist.
If I am not mistaken, the picture is supposed to depict a fish with flippers, a tail and spines on its back. Unless you slept through biology classes, you would know that fish don’t have molars and fangs — that is the domain of mammals. My guess is that the teeth in the front and the back of the mouth probably belong to a horse or something similar; the upper and lower fangs to some fanged or tusked animal (maybe a walrus); and the rest of the body to some ugly spiny fish. In addition to that the shadows also look a little off, and some parts of the outline of the corpse is suspiciously grainy, which is a classic sign of image manipulation.
Hm, the link didn’t work here .. I did find a similar story on the same website though, from september, Not the one here above, that one could not be found on that website.
The mystery remains ..
Here’s a story.

Come on it seems that some people would not recognize a hoax if it bit them on the bum.
Interesting stuff. I remember when I went to Loch Ness when I was 11, they had one of those sonar fish finders on the boat. Me and my sis spent ages looking at it, hoping it’d detect the monster (It didn’t, obviously.) Hope they have more luck than we did!
By the way, I don’t think the picture above is supposed to be the actual monster (If it’s dead, why are they still looking for it?) That taxidermist did a pretty good job, though!
The skull looks like that of a baboon or at least something from the ape family.
Horvath grabbed her camera and managed to fire off one shot before the batteries failed.
Funny how often cameras fail when snapping monsters.
When it comes to Cryptids I’m always more keen to believe in most of them as there is alot humanity hasn’t yet discovered on this planet. That picture however is a hoax as the one the woman caught just depicts something moving along the surface of the water. Most water based cryptids are thought to be Pilosaurs and realated species. Sadly none have yet been proven, i do believe though that there is alot out there we don’t know about and have yet to find.
When the picture was loading up, I was talking to my sister. She then pointed to the screen, which my face was about 3cm from and I screamed and jumped out of the chair.
This is from the girl who found the Saw ride in Thorpe Park ‘tame’.
Anyway, I’m not closed minded about these things, but that does look fake. The proportions of the tail would not be able to carry the head for starters.
