“As international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti’s earthquake victims, a US faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need. Not just any Bible. These are solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.
Called the “Proclaimer,” the audio Bible delivers “digital quality” and is designed for “poor and illiterate people”, the Faith Comes By Hearing group said. According to their website, the Proclaimer is “self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or … even on the moon!”
The Albuquerque-based organisation said 600 of the devices were already on their way to Haiti. It said it was responding to the Haitian crisis by “providing faith, hope and love through God’s Word in audio”.”

Fascists.
There was me thinking it was just self lighting…but then not sure what the point of that would be. Hahaha
Wow. That\’s useful in a time of crisis.
Good job that the need for food, clean water, shelter, security, and total rebuilding of infrastructure has been completely taken care of. I was watching the news last night and just thinking that the only thing the Haitians really need is a talking Bible powered by light.
I see, the science of audio transmission defeated by faith. Clearly God\’s word travels through vacuums.
Given that the airport can’t handle the amount of food and medical supplies trying to land. I hope they don’t turn away one full of medical supplies to land one carrying that. I’m sure I can tell what would give those people the most comfort in thier hour of need. Esp. Given that the hospitals had run out of morphine and anesthetics.
On the moon? In a vacuum? That is impressive. Why waste valuable space on tranpsort vehicles with “solar powered bibles” when they could be replaced with meds, food and water? If you home has just been destroyed and your child is starving, how is quotes from the bible going to help? Hopefully someone over there will figure out how to use the solar panels to power something more usefull. Thanks “Faith Comes By Hearing”!
I am so glad to see this group are putting their money to good use and not wasting it on silly things like food, shelter and water (now then… where has that sarcasm punctuation symbol gone?)
Oh… here it is…Sarcasm symbol ¡ (upside down exclamation Alt+0161)
It makes perfect sense, if you start from a position of mumbo jumbo. If you really do believe that reciting words and phrases can convince all-powerful universe-being to bring good luck upon you, then a BibleBlaster is indeed far more useful than food or clean drinking water.
By the way, before donating to the DEC, you should check the organisations that receive finds from it, then rather donate directly to one of their organisations that don’t include prosetelyzation among their goals.
As usual, the Religious pray on people in a time of need in an effort to spread their “Word”…. I would rather they sent them blankets, food and things they might actually need! The worst thing is that the people involved will be all smug in the knowledge that they are helping the people of Haiti…. Smug is a good word.
Exactly what I’d want after a massive earthquake. I may end up starving to death, but at least I’ll do it with the word of God in my ears! Yeah, thanks so much.
Chocolate teapots would be far more useful!
I’m pretty sure they would prefer money and food…
because clearly what the people of Haiti need in this valuable time is a really loud book. Who needs water, food or a house when youve got A LOUD BIBLE!?!?
How does it work on the moon? Surely you couldn’t hear it… Maybe that’s the best place for it!
parasites feeding on the needy.
Oh for pity’s sake…..
Well, thats morbid. Food? Medical supplies? You’re gonna die anyways, listen to this and find out where you’ll be going!
audible bible? works on moon? In a vacuum? That is a giant leap for mankind, or is it just a leap of faith.
Same point as everyone elses really… Can’t decide whether it’s just misguided logic (they actually think they’re helping) or disgusting selfishness (spreading the word to earn themjselves kudos with the G-man)… but what I do know is it is not going to help. The only word these people need from ‘God’ is an apology. Imagine if a service man’s grieving widdow recieved a pamphlet to vote labour instead of mr Brown’s hand written letter of consolence. Would go down a treat I bet.
They should throw it in the bin. You cant read the bible when you are dying of thirst/hunger.
It was prescient of God, though obviously that’s to be expected, to put the instructions in the front long before the technology was available – “Let there be light” – Proof indeed People
Perfect species example, good will preceeding intelligence. And yet I prefer it that way, sucks for Haiti though!
This earthquake was brought to you by god; here for your enjoyment are a selection of other atrocities to keep you entertained and fearful of further vengence.
Suppose they mean well :S
That is just what someone starving and in extreme discomfort needs. *roll eyes*
> and is designed for “poor and illiterate people”,
as compared with what other kind of Bible exactly?
‘GGG – God Goes Green – presents its new audio Bible, “The Proclaimer” (In association with Solar Power: Doing its bit to preserve God’s precious creation*.) With its high quality audio recordings, The Proclaimer is totally earthquake proof, and powered by God’s eldest daughter, Light**; so not only is it green, it’s perfect for delivering God’s Message to those poor and illiterate devil worshipers who have brought suffering upon themselves (The Proclaimer is sponsered by the Pat Robertson Corporation.)
* GGG fully accepts that God, though commanding us to preserve and worship his precious creation, reserves the right to destroy it at any given time with another earthquake or hurricane…FEAR HIM!
** ‘Light’ is copyrighted to God and its co-investors, Powergen’
Maybe they could burn them for heat?

Fortunately all the local churches in Haiti and local Christian organisations are, like every other soul with compassion. working flat out to relieve all the problems you describe. It’s a shame that all the supplies are being held up by people who are more concerned with money / looting / bribing police and so forth, but then, lacking a moral compass that’s what you might expect. Possibly it’s those self-serving crooks that will steal and then benefit from the Bibles?
What the xxxx use is that to them?
Sickening.
No worries. Real help is on the way.

Well that’s a plentiful supply of toilet paper right there!
If you’ve enjoyed earthquake(tm) why not browse our popular plague collection?
Well, it probably will serve a few souls around there. Most will more likely loose partially or completely their faith, others will be busy with lots of other thing but faith .. real life e.g.. The money could have spent on other things I guess, way more. Sent some people over there to talk to those who have a bad need for that, that type of stuff.
Instead of reading bibles those who would not have disliked that perhaps would serve God’s ideas better by helping people around by doing things, help out here and there. I’m sure some will feel more comforted and stimulated after having read the bible or after having had those meetings/gatherings .. so in the end it is really up to the people there theirselves.
WTF I’m lost for anything else to say!
Also noted the Christian aid workers boarding planes to leave the country as soon as the could.
Hmmmm!
The Haitians must be the unluckiest people in the world, getting stuck twice by a huge earthquake is unheard of.I`m glad that solar power is playing a huge part in this mess. Hopefully people will understand that it`s not only used or meant for the tree huggers.
maybe they can pull the solar cells out and do something useful with them.
Hello-
Thanks for highlighting the needs of the Haitian people. We are in full agreement that they are greatly in need of food, water, meds and other supplies.
These solar audio Bibles were requested by the organizations providing those other needs and they are transporting them in with their supplies. The organizations there are also seeing the need that the Haitian people have for comfort and spirituality in a time where they are facing death, extreme loss and sickness.
Because our donors donate money in order to produce audio Bibles, we cannot use those funds to send supplies. However, we are all helping in our personal ways as we can and hope that we as a nation can all pull together to help the Haitian people. They truly do need all of us.

By the way, there are great stories of encouragement in the Bible. Take, for instance, the story of Job. He lost everything and yet he hung in there and God gave him great rewards at the end of his battle. And the Psalms are also full of the meanderings of imperfect but beloved David, who struggled to show his faith and often felt like a failure. And yet, he felt God’s presence and took great comfort in it. These stories have both encouraged me when I have faced crisis.
Thanks for your spirited dialog about the solar powered audio Bibles. Even if you are a person of faith or not, we all agree that food, water, medical supplies, doctors, nurses, etc., are first priority.
First, these audio Bibles are NOT displacing ANY essential aid to these people who have suffered so much.
Besides, these devices are still in the states enroute to relief groups who have ASKED for them. Haitians have been preyed upon for a long-time by those interested in exploiting their natural resources and impoverishing their people.
Our non-profit believes the people of Haiti are that nation’s most precious resource and we desire to empower them with the Scriptures (in which they believe) in a format they can use. Roughly half the nation is unable to read, so giving them the Bible in a format they can use is completely reasonable.
Thanks for that Jon. Useful information there. It does make a lot of sense to me. I think the “whole person” needs care, especially in times of crisis.
