"he always used it to (temporarily) burn an “X” onto some students arms. "

This is a bad thing. I made it through school without any teachers burning me.

"There are no pictures of the X’s marked on the arms"

I saw a picture. It was scared up, but definitely a cross (not an X, upright with the top line shorter and the bottom line much longer).

A science teacher that doesn't know that applying electrical current to the skin will burn it should be dismissed for poor science knowledge.

Seems like most commenters here haven't followed the link to read the story. The teacher says that he used a Tesla coil for a demonstration and that he always used it to (temporarily) burn an "X" onto some students arms. There are no pictures of the X's marked on the arms and no one says whether this left an (accidentally) permanent mark or not. Seems like a red herring where an X on the arm gets transmuted into a cross by the context of the story. The two events (seem) unconnected.

One of my teachers at school had religious posters on his walls and he wasn't the Religious Education teacher either. Another painted her desks green and white to match the colours of Celtic FC. No one saw any harm in those activities then. But we're in time where people make capital out of such things. Right or wrong? Who knows. It's nothing to do with us

Reading the NY Times article I took the incident with the burnt cross as possibly just bad particle regarding student safety. What got me is that he is reported as telling students to refer to the Bible for additional science research. and saying that science is wrong because the Bible status otherwise (a theory maybe wrong but you need to present evidence/facts to contradict it).
It's this sort of wolly/misguided thinking that creates atheists who then think all people who have a religious belief have the same wolly thinking.

Raymond - Only certain religious groups believe the 6 day story, other religions have other beliefs If one of these creationist stories were to be taught in schools, all would have to be (see http://www.venganza.org/)., otherwise the impression of a state sponsored religion would be created.

It is sad that in this modern age that we are still having this argument in the United States. When these stories appear in the news, I am embarrassed to be an American. I wish mention of religion would be the end of a political campaign in the US as it is elsewhere in Europe.

I remember scratching an inverted cross into my arm using a pencil sharpner blade when I was a young(er) idiot though how can you tell which way it goes. I inverted it to myself so if others saw it I would look like I had a cross the normal way. So this cross on the childrens arms does that face the guy who did it (assuming he did)?

sigh. his story is that he burned an X on them with the tesla coil. he should try another shape. :/ and was the bible ON the desk or IN the desk? that makes a difference!

anyway...it's utterly ridiculous to be spending a half million dollars on such BULLSHIT when schools are starving in this country. :(

Matt said...

But I see no reason why he shouldn’t have his bible on his desk if that’s what he wants.
Land of the free, and all that.

No it is a violation of Separation of Church and State. He is an authority figure hired by the state and having a Bible and pushing Bible lessons is an endorsement from the state for Christianity. Having a Bible on his desk only alienates people who are not Christian.

Most of these same people that are supporting him would be demanding his head if he had a Koran on his desk.
