“The rumbling bass from the party animals next door need no longer keep you awake at night. Cheap and effective soundproofing can be yours in the shape of novel tiles made from latex and a few plastic buttons.
Low-frequency sounds, especially, seem to seep through most domestic walls. That’s because of their long wavelength, says Zhiyu Yang at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Kowloon. Bass sounds at 100 hertz have a wavelength of over 3 metres in air, “and several times longer in solids”, he says.
To block out all sound, buildings would need walls several metres thick. Now Yang and his team have developed soundproof panels made of latex and plastic buttons, that will do the job.
With these panels you can soundproof homes, says Yang. And the panel’s weight is equivalent to ceramic bathroom tiles, “although it’s slightly thicker at 15 millimetres”, he adds.”

That’s normall
Towels are alot cheaper
Oh I already have lots of rubber tiles all over my room. I sit against them in my special jacket sometimes.
there’s another way to use latex to silence the neighbors…you’ve been a very naughty boy, my pretty…
Nice idea for those who find themselves subjected to audio assault by their neighbours. Alternatively, persuade the neighbours to move house!!
Or, alternatively, put the latex tiles on their wall just behind the bed. That way you get sound proofing, AND you don’t have to worry about their headboard breaking through your God damn wall!
wow…where do I get them? although I generally have very quiet neighbours…it would be nice to ensure we all have peaceful nights.
Alright, but how about in the summer and you want your window open while you sleep, but at the same time the neighbour has his window open coz he thinks it’s clever?
So if people want them in a music room or such .. will it influence the accoustic of that room then. Not that I need such panels right now. But the fact that they would create opposite waves which cancel eachother made me wonder .. (is that really the case ?) . Why don’t they bounce back to where they come from I’d say.
Do they absorb sound and didn’t we have such panels already but them made of other material.
Oh well …
also, your house will not get pregnant.
Surely there’s a mistake. I’m supremely confident that latex is RESPONSIBLE for noisy neighbors.
I’ve lived with noisy neighbours for eight years and our local Lambeth housing office have never given them an abatement notice even though in two mediations there were witnesses and evidence of noise as well as the admittance from the perpetrators.
I decided to put the disgusting noise on my blog to share with others what we’ve been having to put up with. These crazy neighbours have destroyed our dreams of renting out the rooms. The world is round so what goes around comes around.
Peace.
