The cognitive capability of the human brain is astonishing. Understanding how the genetic switches are thrown and neural connections are made in brain’s such as Derek’s will open up vast areas of research in psychology, cognition, personality and identity, talents, learning and information acquisition, to name but a few. I am glad that Derek can express himself so beautifully and has the opportunity to do so, too.

Wow . . . you want to be him and have that talent. But then again the poor guy is disabled. Even though with that talent I wouldn’t mind it that much. Now that is true passionate talent. x

Wonderful. As someone who has been taught piano in the past, I find someone who can play like this from ear & in different styles truly amazing.

Surely his blindness has focused his autistic savant abilities upon his hearing. There is a documentary on Youtube which shows more about him and his life. There is another video where someone asks him to play Beethoven’s Fur Elise in the style of Mozart.
Truly amazing.

The difficulty of relaying such a fascinating mind and body connection boggles me. Whether or not his tune was his future or his present is difficult to assimilate given the genius within instance. Instance within itself is a gift that he both attains and does not. An artist of the senses is the positive that us artists are in constant struggle with. It saddens me that he has such a battle with the overload of sensory input.
