“A man from the West Midlands, who was believed to have debts of up to £50,000, had a sex change in a desperate bid to avoid debt collectors.
The man, who cannot be named, had got into so much debt that he decided to switch identities completely.
Actress Sarah Thom revealed that she found out about the man after speaking to workers at the Wolverhampton Credit Union to research her role playing a debt-ridden cleaner in a touring play called Forever in Your Debt.
She said that she met up with workers at the union – which provides financial advice and loans to members – who revealed its most extreme cases of debt to her.
One was the case of man from the West Midlands area who decided to have a sex change in a bid to dodge debt collectors.
The man is believed to have gone through with the operation, but is now thought to be in the process of sorting out his debts and paying off his creditors.”

This article is incredibly, immensely misleading.
First of all, there is no such thing as a “sex change,” that is an incredibly outdated term. One cannot just walk into a Doctor’s office, private or NHS, and demand to have his penis turned inside out.
In the UK it is pretty much impossible to get any type of gender reassignment surgery without first being on hormone replacement therapy for a certain amount of time (and in order to do THAT you need to present as happy and stable in your desired gender). The entire process takes years and is an immense struggle.
Also, £50k in debt? Well on the NHS, IF you can get funding, it would take many years to get surgery, so very unlikely.
So he’d have to go private, which would cost loads anyway.

wow, that really is desperation. it’s amazing that we are allowed to get into that much debt that we clearly cannot pay..
If that’s a picture of the result, I’d demand my money back!
While I doubt they went through the surgery and the like, this could be possible, but honestly a person would be leaning in this direction before they got to this point. Simply deciding to change presentation isn’t enough. But you can do it live your life, maybe even take black market hormones and live your life trying not to interact with people for fear of being found out. Face high levels of discrimination because it takes a least a year of hormone treatments usually before you begin to ‘pass’ unless your a wiz with makeup, and have a naturally androgynous appearance.
Its difficult but it can be done. But surgery…. thats about as likely as a guy in white robes standing on a cloud judging everyone based on a set of 10 commandments.

So did this man/woman rack up more debt in order to get gender reassignment?? cos from what I hear it takes years to get gender reassignment on the nhs….. hummmmm something seems a bit out of place with this one, but hey if its in the paper is must be true, right?! ; )

Surely he could work out some sort of payback plan. changing your gender seems a bit OTT, even if he was massively in debt1
after the sex change, he’d definitely be stoney broke
it’s a great way to lose weight though, when I had my sex change done I instantly lost two stone!
