Belfast was just wonderful, thank you any of you who came along and packed out the Waterfront Hall with astonishing noise and energy. The response from the house was astonishing, and seeing everyone leaping to their feet in such a huge open hall was really fantastic. Thank you.
We visited the Giant’s Causeway, which, though I’m sure it’s just obligatory school trip territory to the locals, was a lovely afternoon trip. I realised the image I had carried around in my head of the Causeway since primary school was quite, quite different from the real thing. We had lunch at the Bushmills Inn (the whole of Bushmills smells of its famous malt) and headed back for the show.
The shows were very good, but on the third night my voice suddenly became worryingly absent. Two late nights with friends, a change in weather and a long run of shows had taken their toll, and I had to perform the last night with a more controlled tone than normal. This is a huge worry when this happens: keeping the voice strong is always the priority. If it goes, we have to pull shows, which is terrible.
Therefore I was not able to go out for signing on the last night, and unfortunately this will have to be the case for the next few nights until my voice is back to normal. It’s straight back to the hotel and into bed, rest as much as possible and then not speaking during the day. Steam, water, honey and lemon fill my wordless days until the shows. So a thousand apologies to anyone hoping to catch me after the shows: I am whisked away quickly, so please don’t waste your time waiting at the stage door for now thinking I’m still in there.
Hopefully things will be back to normal after a few days. I’ve also had to cancel meetings and interviews until this period passes.
Dublin tonight was huge fun: we were only the third show to appear in the brand new Grand Canal Theatre. Its a fantastic place. From the stage you can here each of the 2160 people as if they were sat right around you. The Dublin audience is different from those of Belfast: rowdier, funnier and very present. They were huge fun and a well-placed shout from one audience member had me and the backstage crew cracking up. So thank you for tonight, Dubliners. Looking forward to the next two.
Apologies again for not being able to come out and sign afterwards. Will let you know how that goes.
Meanwhile I must try to enjoy Dublin in silence…

I was at the Belfast show on Tuesday. It was AMAZING!!! One of my friends was on stage near the end, which was hilarious. Afterwards my friend and I waited until about 11:45 at the stage door until our taxi came and were a bit sad that we never got to meet you. I found out the next day that you came out a few minutes later and I was devastated. So on Wednesday night, I went to the Waterfront after your show and joined the crowd that was waiting. I felt nervous and awkward and then I got your tweet to my phone and before I knew it I was reading it out to a crowd of 20+ people without any nerves, even though I have terrible “stage fright” and can’t even do a speech in front of a class of friends. So thank you Derren, I think you’ve somehow contributed in curing my stage fright!!
Also, i can’t believe you stayed at the bushmills inn

I think I have never been more proud to be Irish on what was a truly fun filled evening! Thank you a thousand times over for one of the best nights out, and enjoy Dublin. I’ll be up till 4 in the morning trying to run everything through my brain……..you are truly the master!
Me thinks it’s time for that victorian rememdy of when perambulating without having to converse for one reason or another with the local popluace is to take some chalk and slate in order to communicate e.g. when requiring to speak with the ner ‘do ‘ wells or better still if you man servent can hold siad items for you rather than await around the corner in the handsome cab after your gentleman business has been completed.

I was at the Belfast show on the 12th (my 24th birthday) and thought it was fantastic, my only regret was I had to leave pretty quickly and didn’t get a chance to meet you afterwards. I loved the show, the jokes, your stewie impression, even the quirky music during the interval and generally soaked up the experience. I hope you come back to Belfast in the first run of your next tour because it just flew past too quickly.
Oh and you do a great northern irish accent! – a lot of people think they can do it and get it badly wrong, but yours was spot on – I hope it didn’t contribute to your voice going with our harsh tones.
Hope the voice gets better. Was hopin’ to catch you after Friday’s show but obviously the voice is a priority! Also – watch out for the big ash cloud if you’re flying back to England, all flights from Ireland cancelled! Looking forward to Friday night’s show here in Dublin!

Saw Derren in the Grand Canal Theatre last night, this was my third time to see Derren in Dublin, the theatre is magnificent, all of the rows have excellant leg room which is brilliant and unrestricted view of the stage no matter where you are sitting, I was in the front row with my brother-in-law Alan and Derren chose him to assist in two parts of the show, the show is excellant, wish I could go again tonight. If it comes your way don’t miss it.

Really sorry to read about your voice troubles. It must be a bit of a nightmare when you know you\’ve got shows to do and you\’re feeling like a poorly bunny. Get plenty of rest, look after yourself and I hope you feel better soon. Alternatively, you could consider doing your shows in sign language (only joking!) x

First time seeing you live on Tuesday; I’ve been a fan ever since your first ‘Trick of the Mind’ special (quite attention grabbing when compared to Blaine and Paul Zennon’s efforts around that time- not that they’re bad but this was something unique). I’ve always been a fan of magic but I’m one of those irritating people who like to de-construct the mechanics of every trick I see despite not having the skill to perform them myself. Rest assured, however, I am dumbfounded by every last one of your routines; this is both rare and irritating. I know a magician who went on Monday night who told me he can’t even work out how you managed some pieces ***SPOILER REMOVED***.
Anyway; it was an incredibly entertaining evening; thank you.
Never been to a show – but they always sound amazing! Next year I’ll come! Would fifteen year olds be alowwed on stage? Well, I don’t even know if I’m going to a show next year- but heck, I want to go!

I was at the last night of Belfast and you were absolutely brilliant, poorly voice and all. Every tour I think you cannot possibly top the last one, but yet again you proved me wrong, it was outstanding. I was slightly disappointed to miss out on my birthday hug after the show, but your health and wellbeing are of the greatest importance and I think everybody understands that. I hope the voice is picking up and that you will be able to perform with as much gusto as you desire at the rest of your shows.
I think I bruised the palms of my hands from clapping so hard =) Be sure to come back again, we love you in Norn Iron!!

Enjoy the next couple of nights in Dublin, get yourself down to the Bull and Castle and get yourself some good clean Irish Craft beer (e.g. OHaras, Galway Hooker, Franciscan Well) to lubricate your sore vocals – stay away from that dirty nasty guinness muck, it’s not good for you!

the first belfast show was outstanding. i love live entertainment and I’ve seen some of the worlds biggest bands and stage productions but your shows are by far the best i’ve ever seen. I’ve been reminding my friends and family of this opinion all week. i’m pretty sure they’re ready to kill me but i don’t care, the world must know!

Saw Enigma last night in Dublin, and I\’ve since been struggling to find enough superlatives to describe the show! You have GOT to do a book based on Enigma!
I know i’m a wee tad bit lare posting my blog could be i’m still astonished by you(as usual) Everytime i see u i’ve got closer and closer to the stage filled with awe and excitement but at the same time bricking it incase i’m called to the stage to be near the master of illusion lol. I was at last night’s show and it was amazing, come back to Dublin in your next tour and I will deffinitly be there to see you perform. Once again, amazing show, even better than your last two (on TV)
There’s a really good vocal warm up you can download online from the website Jeannie Deva, (by the way, I’m not affiliated with them in any way, lol, but I use it and found it really helpful). Vocal tension is usually the main culprit with vocal strain and this warm up has exercises to combat this problem. Try using a lower or higher tone to what you normally use too, as it’ll give the strained areas a bit more time to revive.
Sorry, I know I’m teaching a hen to such eggs, but I do hope it might help somehow.
