“Britain’s most popular lie has been disclosed, with one in four people admitting using ‘sorry I had no signal’ when returning a missed mobile phone call, a survey found.
Researchers found the average Briton tells on average four lies every day or almost 1500 every year.
Almost one in six men admitted they were most likely to lie to their wife or girlfriend, on average at least twice a day.
The most popular lie was saying you had no mobile phone signal, with one in four people admitting regularly using the little white lie. It usually came after they hit the ‘ignore’ button when their mobile rang.
One in three Britons have lied about their weight, a quarter fibbed about the amount of debt they are in and 30 per cent have bent the truth about the amount of exercise they do.
Kissing or spending the night with another person emerged as the worst lie to tell while one in five males admitted to lying to their girlfriend to go to the pub or watch sport.
Almost a quarter of blokes have told their partner they look good in an outfit, despite thinking the opposite.”

Four lies a day!? Damn, how busy do you have to be to do that?
I must lie, like.. Maybe 2-3 times a year? And nothing harmful.
Daaaamn.
lol, guilty of a couple of those I’m afraid!
@Nathaniel: Oh, you’re lying far more often than that, you just don’t realize it. As infants, we learn to lie before we can even talk.
Got to admit I do use the no signal lie sometimes, but thats because its easy for people to believe me, since signal in the building I live in is spotty at best. I regularly do lose all signal so if someone calls I don’t want to talk to at that moment ignoring them comes with a handy ready-made excuse!
sorry, no read-a de englich…
Guilty as charged!
Although i never use the “no signal” lie. I use “sorry I didn’t have my phone on me”
But this is true, I easily lie over 4 times a day. Usually to make myself look better.
It’s sad that, i’m glad i’m not female :O
We have real bad reception in South-Africa at the best of time. We don’t lie about no reception we usually dont have any. Case and point where i’m standing right now 2 bars.
But I will admit that sometimes I do say that I was in a meeting or the bank.
i’m lying right now!
The biggest one word lie is, ‘fine’.
The ironic thing is, nearly everyone also ranks honesty as a very important personal value within themselves and people close to them…not surprising at all that humanity is in such a disgraceful mess.
I’m aching for the day when people are free to actually express themselves without the need for dishonesty – conscious and non-conscious. Of course, that will require a social-cultural-spiritual revolution that realigns peoples perceptions in new ways…
@Mr N
Yep, fine is one of the worst, stands for: Fine Is Not Enough. Ugh, mental barriers suck
No mobile signal – hahahahaaa! I’ve never actually used that as an excuse before! Cheers, will have to make full use of Britain’s most popular lie.
Oooh and Mr N’s spot on with FINE. I must lie at least 10 times in a morning.
