In Lebanon parliament is allocated on a sectarian basis, there are 18 official sects in power but the general population have decided they have had enough of religion dictating the law.

fantastic
Looks like they’re making good progress to turn Lebanon back into the former paradise it once was before the civil war.
I’ve visited many times, and the separation of state and religion will help its progress more than any of the reconstruction i’ve witnessed so far.
Religion never does mix well with law, it’s rather like marmite and Turkish delight. They could be mixed but it should be avoided as it leads to catastrophe =].
It is wonderful to see people marching purposefully to enact change. Good luck to them.
It is a very complex situation. I do not wish to judge any religion but the oppression of women and the indoctrination of the young is a massive issue facing many people worldwide, as is the imposition of a controlling state on the private lives of citizens. These are often cultural issues, reinforced by religious doctrine and peer pressure, and not limited to Islam. (Southern baptists are pretty restrictive, too).
A powerful state with a strong legislature and independent police is a good thing if you want to prevent adults from abusing kids, and a bad thing if the state is guided in its ethical and moral purpose by an ancient religious doctrine with no basis in the modern world.
Good for them. I wish them luck.
