This article is incomplete. Why did they do better? The reason is obvious: PRESSURE. The ones who told themselves they would succeed were feeling a larger amount of pressure when performing the task. The ones who just wondered whether if they would succeed or not felt no pressure, therefore their minds were focused on performing the task.

@JohnnyO - good for you! I am so tempted to get a What Would Derren Do? t.shirt printed. I may even get a tattoo of him like in Alan Partridge. (Ha ha)

Not sure if this counts as "Self" motivation, but I recently met Mark Beaumont, (round the world cyclist) and I asked him to sign my bike by writing "WWMD", (What Would Mark Do), on my crossbar.

Whenever I feel tired or need a motivational boost I look down at it and it really does work. It got me through a 10 mile head wind in the rain yesterday

Quite interesting.

For all those looking to get deeper into the nuts and bolts of self-motivation, I recommend Mark Cunningham's seminar 'Thought crimes in Taos'. It's pretty intense, but if you are interested in this area and want to get to the useful and practical stuff that will push your mind to the limits, it can't be beat.

And no, I'm not affiliated in any way, it's just a helpful tip.

Hm, that is a very personal matter .. will not work the same for everyone. I at times need to order myself .. at other times I will check how I feel about doing this or that .. Can I do this is not something I really need to ask myself often .. ofcourse we can .. we all can do almost anything .. if we put effort and thought into it. Unless it's a matter of money ofcourse, too much money.

But maybe I also never need to think I can't .. because I never will see to things I can't .. as those things wont trigger anything in me in the first place .. so even if I tried to do those things .. they probably would not stimulate me, even if I succeeded, nor be to my own benefit.

Self motivation .. at times simply about doing it, starting with it ... and not ask yourself a damn thing ..

The different is..
when a guy ask he self whether them can perform a task generally, he will take more action and more time to solve the task.Of course, it will become more difficult

when a guy ask he self, 'can i do?'
Jz onli see what he think, positive? negative?
if the answer is positive, and he got enough motivity, he will get more easy then.

I wonder if I agree... which leads me to recall two things:
1. When I've tried positive affirmations, I tend to feel fake saying them in the mirror. Usually if I knew I was going to do something, that knowledge appeared as a quick flash of intuition. It didn't need verbal summoning.
2. Asking whether I can, seems to be an inquiry which shifts me into a mental mode that feels more open... like listening... looking... searching... and is more creative and/or more in touch with the situation.
It is the difference between an airline pilot affirming, "we can land!!" and him asking, "is the gear down?"
Interesting article, especially after all the human potential movement's talk about affirmations and such.
