What are the dreams/nightmares where you wake up in them and try and scream, or do a massive silent scream. I had one last night. A man came into my flat and bed, took my hand and squeezed it and told me had killed my dad. For some reason I said "so" (trying to be in control) and then he said I was next. I came round, or rather jerked myself up pushing his hand, but it took some effort to come out of it as I thought I was awake. Very uncomfortable and of course I checked nobody was next to me. I wasn't even watching the news before I went to sleep.

Weaponstar. Being aware of being asleep while dreaming IS the definition of Lucid dreams. And there is no way to dream something without being a part of the dream. If you're asking whether there is free will (is the person actually making chocies or is it a brain-determined conspiracy), well that question transcends dreams and goes into every aspect of our existence... so at the moment it depends on whether you believe the universe is deterministic or not. On the other hand, you can try Wake Initiated Lucid Dreams (WILDs), which basically means that you don't lose consciousness and go from wakefulness, to dream and back. That helps with the practical aspect - if you're questioning the level of awareness of lucid dreams.

I had a thought. How can anyone be sure they are having a lucid dream? What if their being aware of being asleep is just another part of the dream?

I should find out more about this stuff. It's probably already occurred to someone.

I could believe that.

Don't do a lot of gaming, but I write fiction stories - and most nights, lying in bed, I make up stories in my head. I do fairly often have either 1) actual lucid dreams where I can manipulate goings on or 2) dreams in which I think I'm writing or inventing a story and can manipulate things anyway.

Eric said: "and only at the cost of being socially retarded! what a deal."

How socially adept of you Eric haha, castigating others does not make you superior Eric, being socially adept requires you not to feel so inept you need to degrade others.

Lucid dreaming has to be more than knowing I am in a dream 'cause that happens far too often.

I used to have reaccuring nightmares for years until I found out I was in control (and didn't have to put my toys down the shoot into the fire to stop the wolf eating us as I set alarms in my room as he came down each hill...anyway) now to put the golf back on just incase this wolf pops back. Perhaps the UFC would be better. Haven't really looked into lucid dreaming. I have had a few convinced I was awake if that's what it is.
