Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Stephen Fry. This speech was remarkable. I particularly liked how he talked about how the Catholic Church calls him “morally evil” even though he is trying to fulfill his sexual destiny. That struck a chord with me.
Isn’t he wonderful, oh to be half as eloquent.
You can hear the emotion in his voice like really he wants to rage instead of staying so calm.
Well done Stephen.
That was amazing. Only the Catholic Church is capable of the type of willful ignorance and petty sniveling necessary to argue against that speech. I’m sure they tried though.
I saw a representative of the Church over there. He wasn’t very thrilled by this speech. Did anyone interview him afterwards to find what he has to say? I’m sure he had some really funny answers.
“Its hard for me to think that I am evil.” Its a funny thing to say while criticizing Catholicism. Especially when he is accusing that organization of being evil or “not a force for good in this world.” Any organization or state of significant power and history will have bad things in both its past and present. Those burnings of heretics and bible possessors were supported by the rule of a monarchy that still rules the United Kingdom. Does that indict the whole of the UK? Does it nullify any good the UK may do in the world? No.
Governments the world over hide embarrassing events and the Catholic church really is not different. It bugs me especially because America does so much good in the world and yet is still reviled. Let it go. See the good and fight the evil.
I think he doesnt have a children…
A world where anyone makes sexy with anyone is not good…
And i think ‘aids’ was a man made virus…
Sodom and Gomorrah…
Good point Josephine
God should wipe out the sodomites and save we normal people so that we can get drunk, have sex with, and impregnate our own daughters! Wait… what? Have you even read the Bible? Christ, it’s the first book in the bloody thing. Did you just skim through for the smitings?
P.S.
In the context of the rest of your comment, “And i think ‘aids’ was a man made virus” was not surprising.
When I saw this speach I whas curious about the whole debate, so I saw on youtube and what baffled me the most was the fact that this speach was actually cencored. Now why can’t they just be more open to the fact that they are people to who make mistakes and get in the confessbooth themselfs for once in their lifetime.
‘Twas better listening to this the second time around. J’adore Stephen Fry! I went from elation to having tears in my eyes. Beautifully elegant and eloquent as always. Those who lead these religions are above the law and are amoral, and it’s about time their power was removed.
To respond to Joe … the difference between the Catholic Church and (the more enlightened) governments in the world is (as Stephen Fry mentioned in his speech) that it is a matter of doctrine for the Catholic Church to do evil – such as suppression of women’s rights, or prevention of birth control or equality for homosexuals. Yes all organisations have their cover-ups, but it’s the things that it does in the cold hard light of day and seems OK with – such as defending paedophile priests, and failing to censure those that covered it up, that makes it so wrong.
I attend a Catholic school, and do not enjoy it at all. Unfortunately I dont have much power of this.
This is such a refreshing change , Stephen’s arguments are put forward so eloquently and with such grace of word. I find myself agreeing whole heartedly with most of the ideas presented, but still find them flexible enough for me to develop my own sub-opinions on the topic.
A wonderful speech, Im glad I found it.
Where can I find the whole discussion? I would love to know the replies from the catholics in there.
I think Stephen did a wonderful job and how elegant and gentlemen like he speaks, I can only envy him on his choice of words.
Meh. Birds fly, cheetahs run dead fast, Stephen Fry is charming, engaging and witty. He doesn’t get points for that these days as far as I’m concerned-it’s a given. Now, if he learnt fire juggling, for example…
Does that mean Anne Widdecombe loses points for being quite the opposite? – Phillis
Gabby, you havn’t got the point in Genesis, it is not a factual book in the bible. it was written thousands of years be fore christ. Personally, i think you should all leave the theology to the theologians who actually have a clue bout anything. as a catholic myself, i know what is right and wrong, scratch that, it is by being human that i have morals. A man made virus, exactly, caused by sin. You have children? take this as an example, you child breaks a rule you have set, does it then make it ok to break other GOD GIVEN LAWS as a result, ok, put it another way, you rob a bank, and to get away you shoot someone, then as a result of that, you shoot some one else to get a way. the whole thing gets worse. do you really think that all catholics are like awww what’s the pope said today? NO!
to continue, stephen mentioned how perverse in not fulfilling sexual destiny monks and nuns and the clergy are, he clearly hasn’t read up on the priesthood properly, and i think a dictionary may be in order, look up Vocation! this should help you understand exactly what becoming a priest is about, it isn’t choosing, you just know, i know people who have gone to apply to seminar, been told, your only 19, make sure that this is what God wants, even when we have a shortage of priests, the catholic church are making sure that only those who know what there vocation is, Vocation being calling or as stephen puts it, destiny. that is not to say that priests are better than the laity, again not true, very few people are under this misinterpretation of the clergy, each vocation is equally important
leo. You support an organisation that defends and protects pedophiles, tells dying africans that condoms are causing aids and that is obsessed with sex.
Just like your God. It’s bloody incredible that we, in the 20th Century, still have to put up with huge cults of people who believe a deity that is less moral than Hitler’s evil twin. Your deity is obsessed with sex and violence. Homophobia, male chauvinism, genocide. And then you guys make out that all that old testament stuff is either the old covenant or it’s metaophorical. But the worst stuff comes from Jesus. Vicarious redemption? What a terrible, evil idea. Eternal punishment? Eternal punishment is eternally unjust.
You actually, actively believe that a good person will burn forever for not having faith, another terrible idea.
Leo, your oganisation, your cult, is immensely evil in it’s teachings, horrifically cruel and judgemental in it’s application of them, and has a history of bending over backwards to move with the zeitgeist of morality and slowly accepting scientific truthes. There is absolutely nothing that absolves this organisation. It does some good things? Great, name one GOOD thing it can do, that can not be achieved by purely secular means?
We can go feed and look after starving people without shoving a bloody cult down their throats, thank you very much.
ugh. While he is quite eloquent, he is sadly wrong. He is wrong about Galileo, wrong about Jesus, wrong about the Church and the interpretation of scriptures. Oh well. Even though he didn’t make any arguments, he sounds nice.

Wow, what a speaker. Can you imagine having to follow him on either side?
That was amazing. Only the Catholic Church is capable of the type of willful ignorance and petty sniveling necessary to argue against that speech. I’m sure they tried though.

Amazing speech. Stephen Fry for Prime Minister!

I could tell he has an axe to grind, but nevertheless good to see. His fervor is enthralling. Great vid.

Wonderful and eloquent as usual, Mr Fry. I really admire you and what you stand for.
