I’d like to know the true story behind the Hound o fthe Baskervilles — the one that’s never been told. Plus, I’d like the young Sherlock Holmes to go to Paris and meet C. Auguste Dupin, Poe’s famous detective. Oh, hang on. I’ve written both those stories? The first, “Hounded” appears in GASLIGHT GROTESQUE, and the second THE COMFORT OF THE SEINE, appears in GASLIGHT ARCANUM… two splended books of new Sherlock Holmesw stories! I really want Anthony Horowitz’s PR team. Holmes should investigate why this new novel is considered big news even though there’s a huge popular fiction industry of ‘new’ Holmes novels (best title – Loren Estleman’s *Sherlock Holmes v. Dracula*, from the 70s or thereabouts).

@roz, the sentiment in your reply reminds me of one of the first times i saw a Picasso on the wall in an art museum. found myself completely stunned by the fact that a “master” had lived and created in the same century as i. greatness is still achievable, to this day. classic status IS attainable.

think about how your perspective might affect the potential creative mind. just saying.

There’s a bloke with a goatee who, after much Misdirection, Deception, Magic etc etc goes a little bit bonkers and hypnotises a whole bunch of people to paint charicatures all over the bloody place. On walls, historical buildings, dogs. Sherlock pops up with Jude Law and has to figure out who each charicature is to lead him back to the crazy goatee bloke. Turns out the goatee bloke is being hypnotised by the guy who can make you thin. Readers gasp and I take a big drag on my pipe. Sedimentary my dear flotsom. I got an A in English Lit dontcha know.

Chosen? I’m pretty sure that Conan Doyle said that he he didn’t care what people did with Holmes, as he was tired of him.

But if we are sticking with period Holmes I’d like to see him up against a descendant of Colonel Blood who had nicked the crown jewels just before Victoria’s Jubilee and would not return them unless given a peerage. Because of family pride.

I think Holmes should investigate how the Sherlock Holmes brand has managed to warrant being remade again and again and again, cos I’m cynical, me.
