"They used to believe that the universe consisted of interlocking, invisible 'spheres' with the earth at the centre, that all moved like an intricate, interconnected clockwork."

They were close, it's actually invisible overlapping dimensions that move in parallel. But hey, you've got to give it to them, they were close.

Share and Enjoy!

I laughed so hard when I read this entry! All I could do was remember the following...

"We are here as representatives of the Amalgamated Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries, and other professional Thinking Persons."

"We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"

Douglas was a prophet and didn't know it!

Interesting reading on these comments.

What I observe is Dea Animi trying to persuade us to be ignorant of the facts so we may accept Astrology.

Dea Animi, I would like to say that most skeptics DO have the ability to be ignorant of facts and to "let go" of our logic in order to believe in Astrology and such things. We have no problem with doing this. I would go so far as to say we all believed in something of similar illogical, non-evident status at one time in our lives, but again, we made the choice to ask questions of our beliefs.

If you have read "tricks of the mind" by Derren, he makes a very interesting point.

In a manner of words he says: If you believe in something so strongly, then by asking honest questions of your belief can only make your belief stronger. Ask yourself.

“He said only the earth orbits the Sun in 365 days and returns to its own place”,
So The Big-Bang (expanding universe) Theory is incorrect? Or is this just an example Cox talking?
If “dark force” is causing the material in the universe to accelerate. Shouldn’t someone rename it The Big Suck Theory?

Good grief is this still going?! Kudos to you Phillis for having the patience to deal with the word salad offered-up and for carefully treading the line between quite rightly and firmly trashing stupid ideas while trying to maintain due respect for the individual holding them.

Dea Animi, can I quote Tim Minchin here?
"Yeah, I'd like to think I have evidence of love. Love without evidence... that's just stalking."

Unicorns weren't some kind of intricate metaphor, they were a conflagration of several exaggerated stories based on observation (...and it was THIS BIG! And BREATHING FIRE!). They used to be rather creepy, fire-breating, vicious creatures. Then, Christianity somehow adopted them as a symbol of Christ, and started collecting narwhal teeth as relics (because they thought those were unicorn horns).
I find narwhals much more amazing than unicorns, frankly.

Systems of thought, whether scientific or spiritual are valuable and valid. Without something to relate ourselves to, we cannot assess who or where we are.

What evidence exists or can be given that the planets have any affect on us at all? If you use the planets as symbols that represent the (scientific) laws of nature, then they have a great effect!

Astology, uses the planets as metaphors for the laws of nature, If one can understand the laws of nature then it makes it a whole lot easier to work with them. The Wright Brothers undertanding of these laws enabled them to fly.

- The Wright Brothers used mathematics (The Lift Equation) to fly, astrology played no part in this. Please explain how using the planets (as either symbols or any other method) can have an effect on any one individuals life in any way - based on their physical birthdate and time and I will be happy to consider your case. - Phillis

You appeared to say it was worthless by mocking "we’ve all grown up and learned to let go of such idea’s along with the flat earth theory, the existence of unicorns etc ....."

Is that what you call love? "real world responses to phenomenon."

Science and Spirituality, objectivity and relativity, logic and feeling. Humans need both. All truths are half truths. Humans aren't just robots who get off on scientific theory, humans appreciate things without logic and see something in the mind and the heart other than "a real world" response to outside phenonmenon. This is what makes a human, er human......

- I wasn't mocking, these examples were genuine held beliefs by the very people you mentioned. Aristotle believed when you farted you lost part of your soul and Newton held a strong opinion on the Cosmic Ether. As a society have learned to let go of these ideas as we've grown up. You may find them absurdist because to us in this day and age, they are. And yet they belong in the same era as that which you are protecting. Society needs to move forward in order to progress which is why we have rejected such ideas like these. Astrology is a mixture of poorly defined sub genres, it's been replaced by astrology - a highly precise science. If it is going to make real world claims (you will find a new job / love / house) then it will be criticised under that framework. I'm more than willing to be a test subject to see if it's claims are true, and yet to date the only takers have been so wildly left of the mark they are only as good as guesswork - Phillis

Is there any scientific proof of the existence of love? Everyone believes in it. Perhaps scientists call it an electromagnetic force. An astrologer - the law of attraction. Two different terms that mean the same thing - both unproved. Many great achievements have been made by those who did not go with popular theory.

Unicorns were mythological. Myth being scientific observations conveyed in allegory. If taken at face value, the myths mock the observer. If taken with thought, the myths reveal ancient scientific observations. They were purposefully covered up with symbols to divert those who can only see what in front of their face. And so I introduce you to the planetary symbolism of astrology. It seems it has indeed kept realists from it's anceint wisdom.

- There's is a hormonal and chemical response that can be seen when someone is "in love" or feeling the sensation and there's evidence someone loves another person by their actions. These are real world responses to this phenomenon. What is the equivalent in astrology? What evidence exists or can be given that the planets have any affect on us at all? - Phillis
