Is there life before birth? That we so much focus on life after death demonstrates our fear of death and the inner deep wish for our lives to continue somehow.
Well, most of the faithful start with a faulty premise, and build on it. So, where is this scientific proof of the soul then? Give me one peer reviewed paper in a reputable scientific journal that gives proof of the soul. Until you can do that your arguments are without foundation.
I think everyone would like the idea of life after death, to know your loved ones never actually leave you, but this is the exact type of emoctional weakness which ‘Psychics’ prey on. Its a nice and comforting thought that you can carry on after you’ve died but it gets ruined by fraudsters playing guessing games with your deceased relatives and friends.
I believe that we live on through the passing of our genes (children), and through the memories we leave. Surely the afterlife is how we are remembered – for our deeds, good and bad. I’ve no religion, and I don’t begrudge anyone who has faith, but I firmly believe that the quality of your life here and now is important. Nice name check from the sceptics Dezza. Toodle pip
I’m never sure if people are joking on this blog…it gets quite a wide range of commenters. You do see the point 1984 was making, don’t you? Protip: it wasn’t referring to the gestation period
Rob: I know. I just thought it was funny that he said ‘birth’, like people are randomly created out of nothing when they are born. I could just say that there’s neither life before conception nor life after death, but this seemed funnier to me.
Technically, I think people are referring to consciousness instead of life anyway (as life sort of demonstrably ends at death), which has its primitive beginning (if I recall correctly) at about 20 weeks gestation. So there’s both life and consciousness before birth (though not before conception).
This is one of my favourite programmes, and I saw this on Sunday – I got really overexcited when I heard them mention Derren.
I honestly thought that Bishop Stephen was a lovely bloke, and I wish that the preists who come to my school were more like that.
I’ve almost died, (drowned). An incredibly serene experience. Everything slowed right down, and life appeared to flash before the eyes. Though I suspect this was caused by the brain shifting into higher gear to process all the data available. In the hope of finding something of practical use.
I’ve not existed, (before I was alive). Nothing to report there, I’m afraid. But until I experience it personally, I’ll have to “pass on” the last one.
I can induce sleep paralysis and trigger near-death experience, DMT, and go out of my body and fly around, and also go to the light at the end of the tunnel, never been to the the light becasue im scared,it is very easy to do. Listen to the sound of scilence in your skull, thats the big secret, listen untill it gets louder and louder and start to buzz. try plugging your ears, listen to the Hissss Buzzzz
The youngest contributor who made the simplest and most pertinent observation that we are physical beings, and that consequently our souls are a concept that results from the thoughts of a physical brain, was the only person to offer a logical argument, and I can’t tell you how pleased I am that he did!
Couldn’t even manage 60 seconds.
Did I miss much?
“Where’s your evidence?”
“We’ve got Souls.”
Damn, what a Genius >.<
Who would’ve thought the Bishop would be amongst the most sensible present?!
8:20 – He’s got my vote.
Interesting…personal proof? I respect peoples beliefs but as an atheist I find them dismissing science rather annoying!
Is that a challenge @6:40??

I see some Herp Derp on this page.
1984: Well yeah, a fetus is alive before it is born. Cells dividing and all that.
The muslim dude on the panel has Derren’s nod. See 14.24.
