Tony. Thanks for the response. Of course the loss of indoctrination & "fairy stories" should be freeing, but watching a 33 year old devout christian friend recently realise that the people who loved him had been lying to him his whole life was pretty heartbreaking. He's suffered terribly & threw himself ito being more & more devout to deny what his head was telling him, he refers to his current state as being one of "religious" withdrawal" he says he feels as if he's lost part of his identity. I hope that with the support of his mates he'll end up happier, but this isn't a "revelation" for everyone that immediately brings great happiness, what he is now, is miserable & confused. I Imagine Derren could probably shed some light on this frame of mind.

Miss Di Rection: "The loss of a lifelong belief can be worse than grief ..."

I doubt that, but I know it can also be hugely relieving and freeing. A friend of mine who used to be a hugely evangelical born again christian at college was a much happier person in many ways once he'd rejected god and come out as gay. He's never looked back, and indeed is hugely embarrassed these days when he god-bothering past is reminded to him.

It sounds very much like a "hard sell" but we're a tough market, we atheists. Perhaps I should open my garage, accessible to all faiths incidentally, and invite a few Catholics over for a party, not necessarily "of youth", and relay some "common reason" to them!

It all sounds very patronising and irks me. So there!

I think I see what the problem is, he's getting the words "dialogue" and "monologue" confused.

To me "atheists" is a bit like saying "rest of the world". Do atheists identify themselves as a group in the same way theists (of whichever persuasion) do?

Can I just say....that pig is wearing a tie! Thats bloody brilliant.
On a serious note......no I cant help it...its a pig with a tie on....completely distracting.
Like that Monkey riding a pig....thats all I've thought about for days.

Personally as an athiest I think its all a bit pointless. We will never agree and thats just that. The only dialogue I can see working is where is the nearest bar?
The minute it goes to religion I drift off and start watching monkeys ride pigs in my head.....look at it chase the pig!...hahaha brilliant...anyway where was I?

Sod the prayer and meditation - cant we all just have the party?...is there an age restriction because it says Youth but I consider myself fairly sprightly and wrinkle free.

“The events will conclude with a party for youth in the courtyard of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, followed by prayer and meditation inside the cathedral.”

That is going to be an absolutely kicking party!

Only kidding, I can imagine nothing more soul destroying than a party for "youth" organised by the pope.
hmmmm I have seen the words "pope" & "youth" in a sentance together before, can't think where........

Oooh, I bet the atheists can't wait for the prayer bit.

The last time the Pope proposed a dialogue with atheists, he made sure he got to pick the opposing team. No Dawkins, no Hitchins, no Dennet, no Harris "because they're not respectful enough".
In fact it looked a bit like this really...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqQE4IZhbTk
If he just wants 3 hours of unchallenged preaching with 30 minutes of sycophantic handpicked questions at the end why doesn't he just call the BBC like he did last time and be done with it.
Dialogue my ass!
