I grew up in the U.S. and so I joined the U.S. military. Grew up around Rock and roll, so I became a Rock and roller. A limitless number of these patterns.
Religious adults are nearly always simply a product of religious childhood coaching. I believe that religious commitments are not a product of careful analysis but instead environmental.

“The result raises questions about belief and self”.
Isn’t belief, acceptance of something which we either cannot or will not test?
A true prophet (or scientist) would not fear questioning. Since they would have answers, rather than just a belief that they have answers. The right questioner would soon reduce anyone unwise enough to submit to questioning, to a gibbering wreak. Though the use of self-exposed contradictions, drawn from that unique internal rendition of external reality.

Sorry, guru character, and a phony religion? I'm struggling to understand how this is any different from any other religion on the planet.

Was his name Connie Shak Lin?
I have to admit I did check Damrey Phong on google earth to see if there was an air strip there.
Isn't it all a question of good story telling?
