more legal woes in Europe...

Scientology withdraws its lawyers and defendants from a trial in France

by Thierry Lévêque, edited by Patrick Vignal

PARIS (Reuters) - Scientology's lawyers announced on Thursday that they are withdrawing from an appeal trial in Paris, where this American organization stands accused of "organized fraud" in proceedings that carry a high symbolic risk.

The official reason given for the withdrawal was the fact that the court accepted to hear the side of the anti-cult association UNADFI and refused to hear certain arguments, but the withdrawal does not necessarily prevent the continuation of the trial.

Oh really?
Judging from the above replies we must legalize murder and drugs and so on just for the people just to decide how bad it is))) banning is no good, let us try do it first, right?

I don't agree with banning books, and I'm no fan of Scientology, but I also don't think we should get so indignant of what people in another country decide to do regarding this sort of thing. After all, 'extremism' has to be taken in the context of what is 'normal' for that culture. We look in horror at what the Taliban do, but they think the things we are horrified at as perfectly normal and acceptable.

Mixed feelings about this one. Banned books -- in general, a bad idea. Limiting the amount of garbage available for consumption? That I can support at least in theory. Only problem is who gets to decide what is nutritious brain food and what is swill?

I'm not sure this is the solution, banning never succeeded the way those who ordered it expected, and they are limiting freedom of Russian people, which is more concerning than some stupid religion. Just let the people know how idiotic Scientology beliefs are, and hopefully they will see the truth - that it is just a machine for taking money from it's followers.
